This study investigated whether auditory, speech perception, and phonological skills are tightly interrelated or independently contributing to reading. We assessed each of these three skills in 36 adults with a past diagnosis of dyslexia and 54 matched normal reading adults. Ideomotor apraxia, tested on verbal command and by imitation, was checked in 23 patients suffering from dementia of Alzheimer's type of different severity and in 17 age-matched controls. Receptive language deficits and aberrant auditory processing are often observed in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Symptoms associated with ASD are observed in rodents prenatally exposed to valproic acid (VPA), including deficits in speech sound discrimination ability. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the need for special fitting strategies, improvements in speech discrimination tests support the use of cochlear implantation (CI) for patients with Cogan syndrome. The performance intensity-phonetically balanced (PI-PB) and performance intensity-synthetic sentence identification (PI-SSI) functions were determined for 62 elderly patients (100 ears) with presbyacusis. A comparison of these functions was performed to determine whether patients older than 60 years exhibited peripheral or central PI-PB/PI-SSI patterning. OBJECTIVE: A previous placebo-controlled crossover study of intratympanic latanoprost-a drug commonly used for glaucoma treatment-showed positive effects on hearing, tinnitus, and vertigo in patients with long-standing Ménière disease (MD). We aimed to test the safety and efficacy of intratympanic treatment with latanoprost 0.0005% versus placebo in patients with active MD concerning speech discrimination in noise, hearing, tinnitus, and vertigo.
