Perception-production relationship in children with phonological disorder during speech therapy.

PURPOSE: To compare and correlate accuracy in perception of others', self-perception, and speech production in children with phonological disorder during speech therapy. METHODS: Sixteen children participated in a phonological intervention program comprising four stages: perception of the therapist's speech (perception of others), perception of their own speech (self-perception), and target and probe word production. Performance in each stage was analyzed using percentage accuracy, followed by comparison and correlation analyses. RESULTS: Performance differed between perceptual skills and sp

Abnormal speech production in veterans with bipolar disorder: Relationship to the arcuate fasciculus.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) often present with language abnormalities, but few studies have quantified these features or examined their relationship with white matter microstructure. METHODS: We analyzed language samples from 17 Veterans with BD and 15 healthy Veteran controls elicited with an open-ended prompt about a stressful interpersonal experience. We applied singular value decomposition (SVD) to 275 linguistic features to derive low-dimensional component scores capturing the dominant covariance structure. In parallel, we conducted feature-level between-group test

The clinical and genetic spectrum of paediatric speech and language disorders in 52,143 individuals.

Speech and language disorders are known to have a substantial genetic contribution. Although frequently examined as components of other conditions, research on the genetic basis of linguistic differences as separate phenotypic subgroups has been limited so far. Here, we performed an in-depth characterization of speech and language disorders in 52,143 individuals, reconstructing clinical histories using a large-scale data mining approach of the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) from an entire large paediatric healthcare network. The reported frequency of these disorders was the highest between 2

Speech graph analysis in obsessive-compulsive disorder: The relevance of dream reports.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a distressing disorder characterized by the presence of intrusive thoughts, images or urges (obsessions) and/or behavioral efforts to reduce the anxiety (compulsions). OCD lifetime prevalence varies between 1% and 3% in the general population and there are no reliable markers that support the diagnosis. In order to fill this gap, Computational Psychiatry employs multiple types of quantitative analyses to improve the understanding, diagnosis, prediction, and treatment of mental illnesses including OCD. One of these computational tools is speech graphs anal

Consensus on an assessment protocol for children with speech sound disorders in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorders (SSDs) are the most common form of communication disorders in children. SSD have an impact on children's abilities to make themselves understood to their listeners and can influence a child's social and emotional well-being as well as their academic achievements. Therefore, it is important to identify children with an SSD early, in order to provide appropriate intervention. A wealth of information on best practice in the assessment of children with SSD is available in countries where the speech and language therapy profession is well established. In Sri Lanka

Electropalatography in the description and treatment of speech disorders in five children with cerebral palsy.

Some children with cerebral palsy have articulation disorders that are resistant to conventional speech therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the visual feedback method of electropalatography (EPG) could be an effective tool for treating five children (mean age of 9.4 years) with dysarthria and cerebral palsy and to explore whether training improved the posteriorly placed articulation of the Swedish dental/alveolar target consonants /t/, /d/, /n/ and /s/ produced in different positions. An EPG analysis was conducted and some of the data were combined with a perceptual analy

Childhood apraxia of speech: children at risk for persistent reading and spelling disorder.

This article discusses written language development in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Children with CAS are at risk for persistent reading and spelling disorder in addition to their spoken communication difficulties. The article highlights four factors that increase the risk of written language disorder in this population: (1) the nature of the speech disorder, (2) the presence of phonological awareness difficulties, (3) genetic risk factors, and (4) the negative impact of early reading difficulty on later written language development. The article suggests that traditional ap

The effect of fear on paralinguistic aspects of speech in patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia.

The present study investigated the effect of fear on paralinguistic aspects of speech in patients suffering from panic disorder with agoraphobia (N = 25). An experiment was conducted that comprised two modules: Autobiographical Talking and Script Talking. Each module consisted of two emotional conditions: Fearful and Happy. Speech was recorded digitally and analyzed using PRAAT, a computer program designed to extract paralinguistic measures from digitally recorded spoken sound. In addition to subjective fear, several speech characteristics were measured as a reflection of psychophysiology: rat

Phonological impairment in dyslexic children with and without early speech-language disorder.

This study examines phonological awareness in a group of 10 dyslexic children, compared with two groups of children (a reading-equivalent control group and a group of beginning readers). Five of the dyslexic children exhibited an early speech-language impairement, and five others were not language-impaired. The experimental design consisted of a set of 10 tasks involving sensitivity to phonological strings, phonetic identification, and phoneme segmentation and manipulation. The major findings reveal that (a) the two subgroups of dyslexic children exhibit a metalinguistic impairment and (b) dys

Speech therapy for psychogenic voice disorder: a survey of current practice and training.

A survey of speech therapists in the United Kingdom showed that they usually undertook the treatment of psychogenic voice disorders. Their pre-qualification education had provided advice that was usually reflected accurately in the experience they gained in practice, though during their education about a third had lacked any opportunity to treat or observe psychogenic voice disorders. The appropriate duration of treatment appears to be in doubt. At present, speech therapists acquire many of the psychological skills required for treatment after qualification. There is a substantial need for pos

The occurrence of developmental apraxia of speech in a mild articulation disorder: a case study.

Although Developmental Apraxia of Speech (DAS) often is considered a severe communication disorder, speech-language pathology literature supports the idea that DAS also can be exhibited in children with mildly disordered articulation. The case study is that of an elementary age client with a seemingly mild "r" articulation problem but who also presented characteristics consistent with DAS. Awareness of the possible presence of DAS when assessing and planning remediation for clients exhibiting mild articulation problems could increase the effectiveness of our professional services to these chil

[A case of aphasia with speech disorders by infarction of the left caudate nucleus and putamen].

An infarction involving the left putamen, caudate nucleus and the anterior limb of the internal capsule, resulted in aphasia with semantic paraphasias, verbal incoherence and verbal memory impairment. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) studies with 133Xe inhalation at 20 days post onset showed, on one hand, a bilateral lowering of cortical blood flow and on the other hand a left frontal-parietal hypoperfusion area. Spontaneous recovery occurred within 2 months. While the mean CBF became normal at 14 months post onset, a relative hypoperfusion area persisted on the anterior left hemispheric cortex. On t
