Non-traumatic intracranial acute epidural hematoma(EDH)is rare. It is mostly caused by coagulation disorders, dural metastasis, or vascular malformations of the dura. We report a case of non-traumatic acute EDH caused by chronic nasal sinusitis and review the literature comprising 10 cases of acute EDH caused by chronic nasal sinusitis. A 16-year-old boy visited our outpatient clinic with a 2-day history of severe headache. He did not have fever or neurological abnormalities and showed no evidence of head trauma. Cranial computed tomography(CT)revealed sphenoid sinusitis and a small amount of …

Sphenoid sinus fungal ball (FB) is a noninvasive fungal infection affecting predominantly immunocompetent middle-aged female patients. Common clinical manifestations include headaches, postnasal drip, and nasal discharge. In this case report, we present a 56-year-old female with a 10-year history of occasional dizziness, vertigo, nystagmus, feeling disoriented and feeling her eyes moving rapidly. Complaints of restlessness, insomnia, anxiety, stress and anger were also present. Due to the nonspecific nature of her symptoms, a diagnosis of sphenoid sinus FB was overlooked. Definitive diagnosis

Even being equipped with advanced surgical navigation systems, thorough analysis of patient's imaging diagnosis before procedures is still of great necessity for the operators. This study aimed to explore the morphological changes of sphenoid sinus lesions as observed on computed tomography (CT), and further carry out the fenestration of sphenoid sinus under guidance of the CT.A retrospective analysis of the characteristics of CT images was performed. The outcomes of three kinds of nasal endoscopic surgeries on benign lesions of sphenoid sinuses were investigated. For the 128 patients included

We have used cone-beam computed tomographic (CT) images to retrospectivelyevaluate the influence of sex, skeletal class, facial type, and the presence of septa on the volume of the sphenoid sinus in 172 images from 85 men (mean (SD) age 28 (2) years) and 87 women (mean (SD) age 30 (1) years). Skeletal class and facial type were calculated for each patient from multiplanar reconstructions using NemoCeph® software. Volumetric analysis of the sphenoid sinus was made with the help of the ITK-SNAP® 3.4.0 segmentation software, while the presence or absence of septa in the sphenoid sinus was evaluat

Sphenoid sinus carcinomas occur rarely compared with other sinonasal tumors. A case of sphenoid sinus squamous cell carcinoma presenting with acute, isolated optic neuropathy and visual loss is presented herein along with the related literature. A 37-year-old man with sudden decrease in visual acuity in his left eye of 15 days' duration was referred. He had received high-dose intravenous corticosteroid therapy with the provisional diagnosis of retrobulbar neuritis, and his visual acuity had temporarily improved at this time. Magnetic resonance study showed a space-occupying lesion in the left

Mucoceles of the facial sinuses are benign tumors. They consist of a pouch made up from altered sinusal mucosa containing mucus ant inflammatory exudate. This tumors have a tendency to distension and to erode the bony walls. Their common site is in the anterior frontoethmoidal, rarely in the posterior ethmoidal or sphenoidal and exceptionally in the maxillary sinuses. They grow progressively at the expense of the eye and its annexes. Standard radiology is the main diagnostic key, but the scanner is essential to determine the extension and to evaluate the integrity of the posterior wall of the

OBJECTIVES: Differential diagnosis is essential, since secondary headache due to paranasal sinus lesions are similar in headache characteristics to primary headache. However, since patients visiting the emergency department due to acute severe headache are primarily treated by neurologists, paranasal sinuses lesions and anatomical variations of the nasal cavity causing the headache are commonly overlooked because of the clinician's lack of knowledge about rhinosinugenic headache. This study investigated the prevalence of paranasal sinus lesions and anatomical variations that may cause secondar

BACKGROUND: The maxillary sinus roof has long been regarded as a reliable reference point for both endoscopic and skull base surgery.
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to evaluate the maxillary sinus roof as a preoperative guide for posterior ethmoid and sphenoid sinus surgery.
METHOD: This was a cross-sectional observational study of 50 randomly selected computed tomographic (CT) sinus scans from patients previously seen at a tertiary rhinology clinic. Each side of the sinuses was treated independently, giving a total of 100 sides for analysis. Using the medial maxillary sinus roof as a fi

The endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach (EEA) to treat sellar, parasellar, and suprasellar tumours continues to gain increased significance. Due to the close proximity of the sphenoid sinus to the carotid artery and the optic canal, it is very important for surgeons to know the anatomical features and variations of the sphenoid sinus as relevant to EEA. A prospective study of the sphenoid sinus morphology was carried out on the cranial tomographic (CT) scan images of 60 Nigerian adult patients. The CTs were reviewed regarding the different anatomical variations of the sphenoid sinus:

INTRODUCTION: Fungal paranasal sinusitis can be either invasive or non-invasive. Saprophytic infections, fungus balls (FB) and allergic fungal rhinosinusitis are non-invasive (AFR).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study examined 521 patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery between January 2016 and April 2017 due to chronic paranasal sinusitis at the Department of Laryngology and Laryngological Oncology of the Upper Silesian Medical Centre in Katowice. The aim of the study was to analyse the histopathological and microbiological material collected intraoperatively and to determine th

Ewing's sarcoma (EWS) is a rare malignant bone tumor that primarily affects children and young adults. While it typically affects long bones, it can occur in the head and neck region, including the paranasal sinuses in rare cases. We present a challenging case of a 45-year-old female diagnosed with an EWS of the sphenoidal and the right nasal fossa. A subtotal removal of the mass was performed on the patient followed by combined adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Due to its rarity, the diagnosis and management of EWS in the paranasal sinuses are challenging.

In a 20-year-old man with a history of sinonasal polyps, bilateral ophthalmoplegia, exophthalmos, and optic nerve dysfunction developed. Radiologic imaging showed a polypoid mass filling the nose and sinuses, eroding into the pituitary fossa, basal cisterns, and orbits, and compressing the cavernous sinuses. Six months after bilateral maxillary, ethmoid, and sphenoid exploration, ocular motility returned to normal, but there remained mild generalized visual field loss in the right eye. The pathologic specimen showed polypoid respiratory mucosa with acute and chronic inflammation as well as eos

If conventional treatment fails, vidian neurectomy is a viable alternative for therapy of chronic rhinitis with recurrent polyposis of the nose and sinuses. From a neuroanatomical point of view beneficial and adverse effects of this surgical procedure are discussed. According to our own investigations and experiences, vidian neurectomy should be performed together with clearing out of the sinuses in every case. Beginning with this precondition a new surgical approach was developed: the vidian nerve is detected through a transethmoidal route in the pterygoid canal at the bottom of the sphenoid

Two patients with cerebrovascular aspergillosis, in the form of arteritis, thrombosis and bland infarcts are reported. One patient had systemic lupus erythematosus with disseminated aspergillosis in lungs, kidneys and brain. The other patient was immunocompetent and had sphenoid sinusitis. Both the patients were diagnosed at autopsy only, despite extensive imaging and laboratory studies. High index of clinical suspicion and early aggressive antifungal therapy are required since definite diagnostic modalities are not available.

This case report describes a rare, asymptomatic brown tumor in a patient with end-stage renal disease. The lesion was incidentally detected during a computed tomography (CT) scan of the paranasal sinuses, performed upon a dentist's recommendation to investigate maxillary sinusitis. CT imaging revealed an expansive osteolytic lesion with irregular margins and a ground-glass appearance involving the left side of the sphenoid and frontal sinuses. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with multiplanar T1 and T2-weighted sequences without contrast demonstrated a solid tissue-like expansive le
