Efficient removal of organic pollutants with magnetic Nanoscaled BiFeO(3) as a reusable heterogeneous fenton-like catalyst.

BiFeO(3) magnetic nanoparticles (BFO MNPs) were prepared with a sol-gel method and characterized as a catalyst. It was found that BFO MNPs effectively catalyzed the decomposition of H(2)O(2) into *OH radicals, being confirmed with electron spin resonance spin-trapping technique and other radical probing techniques. The strong H(2)O(2)-activating ability of BFO MNPs showed promising applications in the oxidative degradation of organic pollutants. When BFO MNPs were used as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst to degrade Rhodamine B, the apparent rate constant for the RhB degradation at 25 degre

Protective effects of green tea polyphenols in the 6-OHDA rat model of Parkinson's disease through inhibition of ROS-NO pathway.

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) and related pathways are thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). Our in vitro experiments suggested that green tea polyphenols (GTP) might protect dopamine neurons through inhibition of NO and reactive oxygen species (ROS). METHODS: Immunohistochemistry, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP Nick End Labeling assay, electron spin resonance spin trapping, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, and molecular biological methods were used to investigate the effects of GTP in an unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)…

Quantitative 31P NMR detection of oxygen-centered and carbon-centered radical species.

Quantitative 31P NMR spin trapping techniques can be used as effective tools for the detection and quantification of many free radical species. Free radicals react with a nitroxide phosphorus compound, 5-diisopropoxy-phosphoryl-5-methyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DIPPMPO), to form stable radical adducts, which are suitably detected and accurately quantified using (31)P NMR in the presence of phosphorus containing internal standards. Initially, the 31P NMR signals for the radical adducts of oxygen-centered (*OH, O2*-) and carbon-centered (*CH3, *CH2OH, CH2*CH2OH) radicals were assigned. Subsequently,…

Relationship between free radical production and lipid peroxidation during ischemia-reperfusion injury in the rat brain.

Forebrain ischemia was produced in the rat by bilateral occlusion of the common carotid arteries combined with hemorrhagic hypotension (30 mmHg). The whole cerebral cortex was homogenized in the presence of the spin trap agent N-tert-butyl-alpha-phenyl-nitrone, followed by a Folch extract. Spin-adducts were detected using electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The lipid peroxidation was estimated from both the amount of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance and the formation of conjugated diene. After 10 or 20 min of ischemia, reperfusion was initiated which induced an abrupt burst of free rad

Epr analysis reveals three tissues responding to endotoxin by increased formation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.

The excessive formation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) in tissue has been implicated in the development of various diseases. In this study we adopted ex vivo low temperature EPR spectroscopy combined with spin trapping technique to measure local RONS levels in frozen tissue samples. CP-H (1-hydroxy-3-carboxy-pyrrolidine), a new nontoxic spin probe, was used to analyze RONS in vivo. In addition, nitrosyl complexes of hemoglobin were determined to trace nitric oxide released into blood. By this technique we found that RONS formation in tissue of control animals increased in the f…

Novel identification of a sulfur-centered, radical-derived 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide nitrone adduct formed from the oxidation of DTT by LC/ELISA, LC/electrospray ionization-MS, and LC/tandem MS.

The detection of highly reactive free radicals generated in biological systems by an ESR spin-trapping technique is always difficult and limited due to the short lifetimes of ESR active spin-trapping radical adducts and poor structural information provided by ESR spectra. In this investigation, we have for the first time employed anti-5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) polyclonal antiserum that specifically recognizes stable, ESR silent end products of DMPO radical adducts and combined HPLC with ELISA, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS

Neuroprotective effects of pterin-6-aldehyde in gerbil global brain ischemia: comparison with those of alpha-phenyl-N-tert-butyl nitrone.

The superoxide (O2.-) scavenging activity and the neuroprotective effects of pterin-6-aldehyde (P6A), a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, were examined and compared with those of alpha-phenyl-N-tert-butyl nitrone (PBN), a spin trapping agent. The scavenging activity of P6A was more potent than that of PBN by 150-fold in neutrophil/phorbol myristate acetate O2.- generating system. P6A attenuated the neuronal damage with a much smaller dose and a greater efficiency than PBN in global brain ischemia in gerbils. These findings suggest that P6A is a more potent neuroprotective agent than PBN and has poss…

Ultrasound-activated piezocatalysis based on Bi4Ti3O12 for the wireless degradation of sodium urate: a new paradigm for gout treatment.

As a widespread inflammatory disorder, gout is characterized by the excessive deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals. Despite substantial advances in clinical management, existing therapeutic approaches remain limited by the need for invasive procedures and delayed treatment efficacy. Here, leveraging the use of piezoelectric Bi4Ti3O12, we develop an ultrasound-driven piezocatalytic strategy for the wireless and rapid degradation of MSU. Several Bi4Ti3O12 samples are synthesized by varying the hydrothermal synthesis temperature, and the Bi4Ti3O12 sample obtained at 220 °C exhibits an op

Evaluation of the antioxidant activity of tetracycline antibiotics in vitro.

Tetracyclines are the second most common antibiotic family in medicine usage. These antibiotics exhibit antioxidant potential; however, the exact mechanism remains unclear. The antiradical activity of the seven tetracyclines (TCs; tetracycline, chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, doxocycline, methacycline, demeclocycline, minocycline) was determined using the free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH(•)) and hydroxyl radicals (HO(•)) generated in a Fenton reaction. Electron spin resonance (ESR), ESR spin-trapping, chemiluminescence and spectrophotometry techniques were applied. It was f

Free radical scavenging and hepatoprotective actions of Quercus aliena acorn extract against CCl4-induced liver.

In the present study, we investigated the protective effect of Quercus aliena acorn extracts against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats, and the mechanism underlying the protective effects. Aqueous extracts of Quercus aliena acorn had higher superoxide radical scavenging activity than other types of extracts. The Quercus aliena acorn extracts displayed dose-dependent superoxide radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 4.92 microg/ml), as assayed by the electron spin resonance (ESR) spin-trapping technique. Pretreatment with Quercus aliena acorn extracts reduced the increase in serum aspartate amin

Transformation of barbituric acid into alloxan by hydroxyl radicals: interaction with melatonin and with other hydroxyl radical scavengers.

Barbituric acid (2,4,6-pyrimidinetrione) can be transformed by a non-enzymatic hydroxylation into alloxan (2,4,5,6-pyrimidinetetrone). This transformation can be used as a reaction indicating the formation of hydroxyl radicals (.OH). This conversion was detected using HPLC. Formation of .OH was demonstrated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy combined with spin-trapping techniques. It was shown that .OH generated via the Fenton reaction abstracts first a hydrogen atom from barbituric acid (BA) and forms intermediately a paramagnetic derivative of BA. After a second attack by another

Dietary magnesium deficiency in rats enhances free radical production in skeletal muscle.

Recent studies suggest that free radicals may be involved in tissue injuries induced by magnesium deficiency. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of magnesium deficiency on free radical production of skeletal muscle tissue. Male Wistar rats were pair-fed from weaning for 12 d either control or Mg-deficient diets containing 960 or 40 mg magnesium/kg diet, respectively. In the Mg-deficient rats, hypomagnesemia was accompanied by significantly lower magnesium and greater calcium concentrations in skeletal muscle tissue. Electron microscopy of skeletal muscle tissue revealed ultr

In-Plane Gradient Magnetic Field-Induced Topological Defects in Rotating Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensates with SU(3) Spin-Orbit Coupling.

We study the topological defects and spin structures of rotating SU(3) spin-orbit-coupled spin F=1 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in an in-plane quadrupole field with ferromagnetic spin interaction, and the BECs is confined by a harmonic trap. Without rotation, as the quadrupole field strength is increased, the spin F=1 BECs with SU(3) spin-orbit coupling (SOC) evolves from the initial Thomas-Fermi phase into the stripe phase; then, it enters a vortex-antivortex cluster state and eventually a polar-core vortex state. In the absence of rotation with the given quadrupole field, the enhancing S

Tailoring light-induced charge transfer and intersystem crossing in FeCO using time-dependent spin-orbit configuration interaction.

Real-time (RT) electronic structure methods provide a natural framework for describing light-matter interactions in arbitrary time-dependent electromagnetic fields (EMF). Optically induced excited state transitions are of particular interest, which require tuned EMF to drive population transfer to and from the specific state(s) of interest. Intersystem crossing, or spin-flip, may be driven through shaped EMF or laser pulses. These transitions can result in long-lived "spin-trapped" excited states, which are especially useful for materials requiring charge separation or protracted excited state

Generation of free radical intermediates from foreign compounds by neutrophil-derived oxidants.

A large number of foreign compounds, including many drugs, industrial pollutants, and environmental chemicals, can be oxidized under appropriate conditions to potentially toxic free radical intermediates. We evaluated the ability of the oxidants produced by the neutrophil myeloperoxidase system to generate free radical intermediates from several such compounds. Sodium hypochlorite or hypochlorous acid produced by human peripheral blood neutrophils and trapped in the form of taurine chloramine were both found to be capable of producing free radicals from chlorpromazine, aminopyrine, and phenylh

Dislocation-based skyrmion traps.

Topologically spin configurations, such as skyrmions and bimerons, offer a compelling alternative to conventional magnetic domains, potentially enabling high-density, low-power spintronic devices. These textures, characterized by their swirling spin textures and nontrivial topological charges, can be strongly influenced by imperfections in the underlying crystal lattice. In particular, dislocations which are commonly presents in real materials, may alter the magnetic energy landscape and impact the stability or dynamics of spin textures. Motivated by this, we study how a screw dislocation infl

Synthesis of a new family of glycolipidic nitrones as potential antioxidant drugs for neurodegenerative disorders.

This paper deals with the synthesis of a novel series of amphiphilic glycosylated spin-traps derived from alpha-Phenyl-N-tert-butyl nitrone (PBN) and an initial characterization of their anti-caspase-3 activity. Preliminary investigation of their anti-apoptosis effect showed they dramatically inhibit the activity of caspase-3 in cultured neuronal cells following induction of apoptosis by hydrogen peroxide.

Nitroxides increase the detectable amount of nitric oxide released from endothelial cells.

Nitroxides are known to exert superoxide dismutase-mimetic properties and to decrease O-2- and H2O2-mediated cytotoxicity. However, the effe … d from cell monolayers was dose-dependent, with the highest efficacy between 30 and 100 microM. EPR spin trapping in SIN-1 solutions revealed the formation of .OH adducts from spontaneous dismutation of O-2 and concomitant reaction with H2O2. Both SOD and TEMPOL increased the signal intensity of the .OH adduct by accelerating the dismutation of O-2. The results …

Rate constants of hydroperoxyl radical addition to cyclic nitrones: a DFT study.

Nitrones are potential synthetic antioxidants against the reduction of radical-mediated oxidative damage in cells and as analytical reagents for the identification of HO2* and other such transient species. In this work, the PCM/B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p)//B3LYP/6-31G(d) and PCM/mPW1K/6-31+G(d,p) density functional theory (DFT) methods were employed to predict the reactivity of HO2* with various functionalized nitrones as spin traps. The calculated second-order rate constants and free energies of reaction at both levels of theory were in the range of 100-103 M-1 s-1 and 1 to -12 kcal mol-1, respectively

Defensive Effects of a Unique Polysaccharide, Sacran, to Protect Keratinocytes against Extracellular Stimuli and Its Possible Mechanism of Action.

Sacran, a polysaccharide isolated from the alga Aphanothece sacrum (Suizenji-nori), has unique physical and physiological characteristics. In a previous study, we reported that sacran improves skin conditions in individuals who suffer from atopic dermatitis (AD), focusing on its trapping function against extrinsic stimuli compared with hyaluronic acid (HA). First, we examined the penetration of sacran through stratum corneum (SC) with an impaired barrier function using immature reconstructed human epidermal equivalents. Sacran penetrates the SC to living cell layers of the epidermis, which sug
