Widening of the spinal canal and dural ectasia in Marfan's syndrome: assessment by CT.

We describe a method for diagnosing dural ectasia (DE) and spinal canal widening (SCW) using CT. We examined 23 patients with Marfan's syndrome (MFS), 17 with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and 29 normal subjects, using six axial slices at the level of the L1-S1 pedicles. Transverse diameters of the vertebral bodies, spinal canal and dural sac were measured and indices were defined to differentiate patients with DE and SCW from normal. Statistical significance was assessed using Student's t -test, chi (2)-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient. DE and SCW occurred in 69.6 % and 60.9 % of cas

The size of the vertebral canal and the significance of epidural fat in lumbar spinal stenosis.

Measurements of mid sagittal diameter (MSD) and interpedicular diameter (IPD) in patients operated on for central lumbar spinal stenosis were compared to the control group. Both groups can be matched in terms of gender and age. We found that in the stenotic patients the MSD and the IPD were smaller than in the control group, all of the measurements except the IPD in male stenotic patients was statistically different. Sagittal and axial MR images of the stenotic patients were used to evaluate the status of the posterior epidural fat which was graded as normal, small, very small and absent. All

[Reconstruction of open width of the spinal canal by internal fixator instrumentation and remodeling].

In 106 cases of unstable vertebral fractures treated with the ASIF internal fixator, the degree of restoration of the spinal canal could be studied in detail. Computer-aided planimetry was used to measure the area of the spinal canal. Three series could be studied, where the postoperative CT scans had been performed at different times. The first series of 58 cases had the CT scans taken immediately after surgery; the initial mean traumatic narrowing of the spinal canal had been 42.8%, but after surgery it was only 25.2%. The second series consisted of 74 CT scans performed after implant remova

Myelography, CT, and MRI of the spinal canal in patients with myelopathy: a prospective study.

A prospective study including myelography, CT, and MRI was performed on 36 patients with clinical signs of myelopathy. Evoked potentials and spinal fluid examinations were also carried out. Based on our findings, the patients could be classified as suffering from cryptogenic myelopathy (n = 12), multiple sclerosis (n = 6), spinal stenosis (n = 6), or miscellaneous myelopathies (n = 12). The diameter of the spinal cord was normal in the 2 first groups of patients and of same magnitude evaluated by myelography and CT, while MRI constantly gave higher figures. In only four of the patients importa

Gd-DTPA enhanced MR of the lumbar spinal canal in patients with claudication.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this work was to study the findings on intravenous gadolinium-enhanced MRI of the lumbar spinal canal in patients with clinically suspected neurogenic claudication. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective gadolinium-enhanced MR evaluation of seven adult patients presenting with clinical claudication thought to be related to the lumbosacral spine was undertaken. RESULTS: Of seven consecutive enhanced conventional SE MRI examinations of the lumbosacral spine in patients presenting with lower extremity claudication, five patients (71.4%) revealed abnormal intrathecal enha

[Remodeling of the spinal canal after comminuted fracture of the spine. Apropos of a case].

A burst fracture of T 12, without neurological impairment, was treated by plaster cast. Prior to treatment, there was a significant narrowing of the spinal canal, due to posterior displacement of a bone fragment. This was not modified by treatment, as the narrowing was unchanged on the second CT scan, done eight days later. At 17 months, there was no more narrowing on the CT scan, as a consequence of vertebral body remodeling. The patient had no pain and performed several sport activities.

A study and analysis of spinal canal diseases in the Black Lion Hospital by myelography.

Sixty seven lumbar and thoracic myelographic examinations were performed during the period February 1987 to September 1988. Fourteen patients (21%) had normal myelography while 53 (79%) patients had pathological findings. Spinal canal tumours accounted for the majority of complete CSF blocks (76.7%) Seventy-five per cent of the intradural tumours showed no abnormality on plain films of the vertebral column, whereas 75% of the extradural tumours had pathological findings. Dorsal (central) disc herniation was more frequent (70%) than lateral herniation with almost equal distribution at L5-S1 and

Adrenal cortical adenoma in the spinal canal of an 8-year-old girl.

An ectopic adrenal cortical adenoma containing high levels of androstenedione but without clinically detectable virilizing effects was found in the spinal intradural space of an 8-year-old girl. The tumor, which was located at the L2 level, manifested itself clinically by a short history of bilateral leg pain. It was well encapsulated; therefore, total surgical removal was accomplished. The light microscopic appearance of the tumor was typical of adenomatous adrenal cortical tissue. Ultrastructurally, it also showed characteristic features of steroid-producing tumors, including very abundant s

Combined laminoplasty and posterolateral fusion for spinal canal surgery in children and adolescents.

Spinal deformities, especially kyphosis and instability, after laminectomy for tumors and other diseases, are major clinical problems. Since 1981, combined laminoplasty and posterolateral fusion for the prevention of postlaminectomy spinal deformities was performed on eight male and two female patients aged two to 26 years (average, 13.9 years). The follow-up period was from six months to seven years and three months (average, three years and five months). Two patients died six and ten months postoperatively because of brain metastases (astrocytoma) and lung metastases (neuroblastoma), respect

Clinical results following enlargement of the cervical spinal canal by means of laminoplasty.

Since 1978, cervical spinal canal laminoplasty has been performed on 75 patients in our hospital with cervical radiculomyelopathy and followed with studies of from 6 months to 8 years (average 4 years and 6 months). Overall results: the pre-operative score, using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association Scoring System, was 7.4 and the post-operative score was 15.2; the improvement was 81.0%. In congenital spinal stenosis, the average pre-operative score was 6.3 while the post-operative score was 14.2; the improvement was 66.9%. The pre-operative score of multiple disc lesions was 7.9 and the post-

[Morphologic changes in tissues of the spinal canal in the radicular syndromes of lumbar osteochondrosis].

Study of biopsy material obtained from 612 surgical patients with vertebrogenic diseases of spinal radicles at the lumbosacral level and collation of the morphologic findings with the clinical picture of the disease revealed a correlation between the clinical manifestations and the inflammatory process in the vascularized tissues of the vertebral column. The severity of pain was found to depend on the degree of inflammatory changes in the epidural cellular tissue and spinal membranes. The frequency and severity of inflammatory reactions make it possible to consider inflammation, along with com

Combination of a bronchogenic cyst in the thoracic spinal canal with chronic myelocytic leukemia.

The presented case report describes an incredibly rare instance of an intramedullary bronchial cyst located in the thoracic spinal canal on the dorsal side of the spinal cord, which was observed in a patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia. A 29-year-old man presented with back pain for half a month, along with numbness and pain below the chest and ribs for 1 week. Hypersensitivity was present in the inferior plane of the long xiphoid process in the nervous system. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed intramedullary cystic lesions in the vertebral body plane of the third to the fourth tho

The impact of sagittal imbalance on walking in patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis.

PURPOSE: Gait and posture disorder severely impedes the quality of life of affected patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS). Despite the major health concern, there is a paucity of literature about the relationships among spatiotemporal gait parameters and spinal sagittal parameters. This is a cross sectional study performed in a single tertiary referral center to determine the relationships among spatiotemporal gait parameters and spinal sagittal parameters in patients with LSCS. METHODS: A total of 164 consecutive patients with LSCS, 87 men and 77 women with mean age of 70.7 years

Current occurence of intraspinal intradural and extradural communicating branches in the spinal canal.

UNLABELLED: THE AIM of this work is to point out the intraspinal anatomical current occurrence interconnections between intradural and extradural nerve roots and their possible participation in radiculopathy. METHODS: The anatomical study was performed in 43 cadavers with a mean age of 53.7. All intradural and extradural rami communicantes between nerve roots were excised and examined histologically for the presence or absence of nervous tissue. RESULTS: Anatomical preparations revealed intradural and extradural rami communicantes in 9 cases (20.9 %), mostly in the cervical region in 5 cases

A calvarial acute subdural hematoma migrating into the spinal canal in a young male.

It is not common for an acute subdural hematoma (SDH) in the supratentorial region to show rapid resolution or migration during the clinical course. In this report, we present a rare case where the SDH in the supratentorial region was observed to rapidly migrate into the lumbar spinal canal, leading to severe radiculopathy. A 20-year-old male patient was admitted to the emergency department with severe headache after head trauma. The patient's overall condition was good, whereas his Glasgow Coma Scale score was 15 and blood pressure was normal. He had vomited 3 times after the onset of pain. N
