Seven patients with subacute sensory neuropathy are described and the findings in 29 previously reported patients are reviewed. The presence of this characteristic neurological disorder strongly suggests an accompanying neoplasm. Five of 7 patients had cancer, and 4 died. Autopsy was performed on 3, and pathological analysis revealed inflammation and degeneration of dorsal root ganglia and degeneration of posterior roots and posterior columns of the spinal cord. The dorsal root ganglion was biopsied in 4 patients and showed similar inflammatory lesions. Electron microscopical studies showed in

Benign spinal intradural tumors are relatively rare and include intramedullary tumors with a favorable histology such as low-grade astrocytomas and ependymomas, as well as intradural extramedullary tumors such as meningiomas and schwannomas. The effect on the neural tissue is usually a combination of mass effect and neuronal involvement in cases of infiltrative tumors. The new understanding of molecular profiling of different tumors allowed us to better define central nervous system tumors and tailor treatment accordingly. The mainstay of management of many intradural spinal tumors is maximal

BACKGROUND: Intradural extramedullary (IDEM) spinal tumors are the most common intradural spinal neoplasms, typically benign and slow-growing. They cause neurological deficits through progressive spinal cord compression. Surgical excision remains the mainstay of treatment, with generally favorable outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To analyse the clinical profile, surgical management, and functional outcomes of patients with IDEM spinal tumors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 214 patients who underwent microsurgical excision of IDEM tumors between January 2009 and December 20

A 39-year-old man with a history of recurrent pituitary tumor, Cushing disease, and Nelson syndrome presented with neck stiffness. He previously had bilateral adrenalectomy and hypophysectomy 27 years ago. He subsequently had repeat pituitary surgery, stereotactic radiosurgery, and chemotherapy for recurrent pituitary tumor. During follow-up, he was noted to have rising basal adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) level. On examination, he was neurologically intact with no signs of myelopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spine showed a large intradural extramedullary lesion causing cord compression

Carcinoid tumours are malignant tumours of neuroendocrine origin. Spinal-cord compression from carcinoid metastasis is uncommon, and intradural spinal carcinoid is rare. We report an instance of intramedullary carcinoid metastasis of the conus medullaris in the context of stable, asymptomatic systemic disease. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of intramedullary carcinoid metastasis.

In a brief two year period, magnetic resonance imaging of the spine has developed from a single slice, low signal/noise ratio, extremely time consuming technique to a multiplanar, high resolution examination that can be performed in a time frame similar to that of CT imaging. MR has already assumed a primary imaging role in myelopathic states. It is premature to evaluate its place vis-a-vis CT and myelography in many other disease states of the spine, but clearly, MR is assuming an ever expanding role. As technical improvements continue, it is perhaps realistic to predict that magnetic resonan

Intramedullary spinal cord tumors (IMSCTs) represent a rare and diverse subset of central nervous system (CNS) lesions, accounting for approximately 2% to 4% of all CNS tumors. The majority of IMSCTs are glial in origin, particularly ependymomas and astrocytomas, which collectively constitute over 80% of cases in both pediatric and adult populations. However, a small but clinically significant subset of IMSCTs includes rare lesions such as neuroepithelial cysts, subependymomas, gangliogliomas, lipomas, and intramedullary metastases. These entities differ markedly in origin, biological behavior

Parasitic infections of the central nervous system (CNS) occur mostly in underdeveloped regions of the world. Neurocysticercosis (NC) occurs when the larval form of the T. solium tapeworm invades the CNS. Spinal cysticercosis is an extremely rare type of NC and occurs when the cyst occupies the subarachnoid space of the spinal column. Previous cases have been successfully treated through both surgical and medical means. The current case describes the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of a patient with this extremely uncommon manifestation of neurocysticercosis.

Sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection caused by the migrating plerocercoid larva of the tapeworm Spirometra mansoni that rarely affects the central nervous system. When sparganosis involves the spinal cord, it often affects the thoracic area. Here we report a patient with sparganosis mimicking an intramedullary tumor of the cervical cord. A 51-year-old male presented with slowly progressive paresthesias in all extremities and left-sided motor weakness. MRI of the spinal cord revealed an enhancing lesion from C1 to C4 that was suggestive of an intramedullary tumor. The results of enzyme-lin

BACKGROUND: Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) accounts for only 1% of all parotid neoplasms. Spinal metastases of these tumor are extremely rare.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 21-year-old patient had two prior partial resections of an ACC of the parotid gland followed by radiotherapy. Two years later, the patient presented with a 3-month history of cervicothoracic pain. The cervical spine magnetic resonance imaging revealed a pathological vertebral fracture secondary to metastatic infiltration of the D1 and D2 vertebral bodies contributing to spinal cord compression. The patient underwent a two-staged approa

Spinal atypical meningiomas are rare, and those whose main extension is in the epidural space are anecdotal. Here, we report a case of a young woman presenting with sensory disturbances and a radiological diagnosis of a dorsal epidural sleeve-like mass. The surgical resection of the lesion allowed the decompression of the spinal cord and led to the histopathological diagnosis of atypical meningioma. At the 3-month follow-up, her neurological recovery was complete. Because of the gross total removal of the lesion, adjuvant radiotherapy was not performed: At the 2-year follow-up, no recurrence o

Extramammary Paget disease is an intraepithelial neoplasm affecting cells rich in apocrine glands-often located in the vulvar, scrotal, or perianal region. It typically affects older patients, between the ages of 50 and 80years old, and is most often limited to the epidermis. A 47-year-old Asian male first presented with enlargement of the right inguinal lymph node. A subsequent biopsy revealed extrammamary Paget disease of the scrotum. The patient eventually developed significant worsening back pain with bilateral lower extremity numbness and weakness three months later. Imaging demonstrated

A 2-year-old Boxer dog was examined for a 2-week history of progressive, painful right-lateralized paraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a focal ovoid mass with suspected intramedullary, or less likely, intradural location at the level of L3 vertebral body. Based on the imaging features, neoplasia, and specifically, a nephroblastoma, was suspected. Surgical excision found a difficult to excise mass with indistinct borders. The dog showed marked deterioration postoperatively and was euthanized 3 days later due to suspected myelomalacia. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry of the bi

Lymphoma is the most frequently diagnosed neoplasm in pigs, predominantly of B-cell origin. Multicentric forms commonly affect the lymph nodes, spleen, liver and kidneys. This report describes a case of a multicentric diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with dural involvement in a 70-day-old nursery piglet presenting with hindlimb paralysis. Necropsy and histological examinations revealed nodular thickening of the meninges of the brain and sacral spinal cord, as well as adjacent paravertebral ganglia, by proliferations of large neoplastic lymphocytes. The same neoplastic cells infiltrated the mesent

Multiple myeloma is still incurable malignant neoplasm of plasma cells, which is characterized by the presence of osteolytic bone disease, the latter resulting from increased osteoclast function accompanied by decreased osteoblast activity. Myeloma bone disease is associated with the risk of skeletal events, such as pathologic fractures, spinal cord compression, or a need of palliative bone treatment or surgery, and may be related to decreased survival. In this review article, the results of the studies analyzing treatment options for myeloma bone disease and its complications are summarized.
