Skrjabinoptera vietnamensis n. sp. is described from specimens recovered from the stomach of Eutropis macularia in north-central Vietnam. The new species is characterized by the medium-sized male worms (6.7-8.7 mm in length and 154-182 μm in width) relative to known members of the genus, 2 pointed spicules of unequal length (87-112 μm and 56-72 μm in length), and 10 pairs of caudal papillae. Female worms are larger than male worms (10.7-18.4 mm in length and 264-411 μm in width), with the vulva situated in the anterior part, and embryonated, elliptical eggs, 35-46 μm long by 20-24 μm wide. Skr

This report presents a novel canine condition in 32 dogs in which aberrant migration of Spirocerca lupi larvae through mesenteric arteries, instead of gastric arteries, led to small or large intestinal infarction. This form of spirocercosis was first recognized in Israel in 2013 and is currently ongoing. Typical clinical signs were anorexia and weakness of 3 to 4 days and, less frequently, vomiting and diarrhea, followed by collapse, bloody diarrhea, and severe vomiting. Exploratory laparotomy showed 1 or more infarcted and often perforated intestinal segments in all cases. Microscopically, th

Physaloptera spp. are common nematodes found in the stomach and muscles of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. Physaloptera spp. have a complicated life cycle with multiple definitive hosts, arthropod intermediate hosts, aberrant infections, and possible second intermediate hosts or paratenic hosts. For example, Physaloptera sp. larvae have been found within the tissues of wild northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus), and it is suspected that quail may serve as paratenic or secondary hosts of these parasites. However, because it is not known what role quail play in the life cycle o

Spirocercosis is a disease occurring predominantly in Canidae, caused by the nematode Spirocerca lupi. Typical clinical signs are regurgitation, vomiting and dyspnoea. The life-cycle involves an intermediate (coprophagous beetle) and a variety of paratenic hosts. Larvae follow a specific migratory route, penetrating the gastric mucosa of the host, migrating along arteries, maturing in the thoracic aorta before eventually moving to the caudal oesophagus. Here the worm lives in nodules and passes larvated eggs which can be detected using zinc sulphate faecal flotation. Histologically, the mature

Gnathostomiasis is a rare nematode disease acquired by travelers to endemic areas. The most common clinical presentations are cutaneous forms; however, neurologic involvement can also occur. We present two cases of gnathostomiasis, one of them with severe neurologic complications, in Spanish travelers to Thailand and Mexico, who consumed local food and became infected.

Necropsies performed between 1989 and 1995 on 15 African rope squirrels (Funisciurus substriatus) and 20 African ground squirrels (Xerus erythropus) from the Baltimore Zoo revealed 13 cases of gongylonemiasis. Nematodes were embedded in the epithelium of the esophagus, pharynx, buccal mucosa, and tongue, resulting in varying degrees of esophagitis, pharyngitis, stomatitis, and glossitis, respectively. Routine fecal examinations were negative, and the nematodes appeared to be unaffected by repeated treatments with ivermectin. Most of the affected animals had shown clinical signs of dyspnea and/

Gnathostomiasis was first described in Mexico in 1970, and endemic areas have been spreading in six states of this country. In Culiacan, Sinaloa, 300 cases of cutaneous larva migrans were recorded between January 1992 and December 1995. In addition, a Gnathostoma larva was surgically removed from the eye of one patient. Cutaneous lesions were observed mainly on the face, neck, arms, and legs. About 70% of the patients showed eosinophilia. A skin biopsy was carried out on 35 patients and the parasite was identified in histopathologic sections of 12 of these patients. In four patients, the larva

Thelazia rhodesii was found in the eyes of 149 of 643 bovine heads (23%) that were examined at the abattoir of Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines, during the period February 1994 to February 1995. In nearly half of the animals both eyes were infected and an average of 4.1 worms per infected animal was recovered. Of the 1286 eyes examined, 17% were infected; worm burdens ranged from one to 36 (average 2.9) worms per infected eye. Monthly prevalence of infection ranged from 13% to 36%. T. rhodesii infection was significantly more common in cattle of more than 3 years of age (25%) than in younger a

Thelazia callipaeda eyeworm has been frequently reported parasitizing humans in Asia. In Europe, the parasite is endemic in wild and domestic carnivores and only eight cases have been reported in humans so far. We describe the first case of human thelaziosis in Serbia, along with two cases in dogs from the same area. A One Health approach, based on cooperation amongst veterinarians and physicians, is strongly advised for this emerging infection in order to assess the risk for and prevent of the zoonotic infection.

Infection with Gnathostoma spinigerum has been generally confined to Southeast Asia and Central and South America. However, gnathostomiasis was recently found in British tourists who had visited Botswana. Consequently, travel to Africa should now be considered a risk factor for gnathostomiasis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if monthly ivermectin was efficacious in reducing the observed incidence of eyeworms over a period of 2 months as compared with normal husbandry practices in a population of Republic of Korea Army military working dogs (MWDs).
METHODS: Prospective observation of 114 German Shepherd MWDs in a randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial. MWDs were randomly assigned to either a treatment group receiving a monthly dose of 0.2 mg/kg BW ivermectin orally, or to a control group given an equivalent dose volume and frequency of a saline placebo. A quantitative numerical

Antigenic components of Gnathostoma spinigerum larval extract were revealed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and immunoblot analysis using sera from patients with 6 proven cases of gnathostomiasis, 5 presumptive cases of gnathostomiasis, 3 proven cases of angiostrongyliasis, 3 proven cases of cysticercosis, and pooled sera from healthy adults. By the 2-DE, the larval extract was highly complex and consisted of more than 75 polypeptides. Immunoblotting analysis of this larval extract after reaction with each of 6 proven gnathostomiasis sera revealed various numbers of antigenic spo

Cylicospirura is a genus of spirocercid nematodes infecting felids around the globe. Eleven species have been characterised, with C. felineus and C. subaequalis being reported in jaguarundis, Herpailurus yagouaroundi, from Brazil. Herein, we described spirocercid reddish worms collected from three jaguarundis from Costa Rica by using hierarchical clustering and dendrogram plots of morphological characters reported from our specimens and compared to other Cylicospirura spp., histopathological observations of associated lesions, and phylogenetic analyses of both mitochondrial and ribosomal loci.

Three species of nematodes from the Camallanidae that are known to infect Xenopus laevis Daudin (Anura: Pipidae) were collected from several localities across South Africa. New data on morphology, partial 28S and cox1 genes, infection levels and distribution are presented herein. The most common species, Batrachocamallanus slomei Southwell et Kirshner, 1937, from the stomach and less often oesophagus, was found in eight localities. Camallanus kaapstaadi Southwell et Kirshner, 1937, also from the oesophagus, was found in two localities and C. xenopodis Jackson et Tinsley, 1995, from the intesti

The first case of ocular thelaziasis in a human male patient in Croatia is presented. Thelaziasis is a zoonosis caused by nematodes of the genus Thelazia, parasites of the conjunctival bags or tear ducts of mammals and birds. Two types of the genus Thelazia (T.) have been described as causes of infection in humans, T. callipaeda and T. californiensis. To date, less than 300 thelaziasis cases in humans have been reported. This zoonosis is very rare in humans in European countries, with a high incidence in Asian countries, especially in China, Thailand and Japan. Because of the high prevalence o

Third-stage larvae were used as antigen in the diagnosis of gnathostomiasis in Western blot analysis. Normally, the larvae were obtained from digestion of eel's liver (Fluta alba) by the enzyme pepsin. We used pineapple juice (Ananus comosus) instead of enzyme pepsin in harvesting Gnathostoma spinigerum third-stage larvae. The difference in recovered larvae numbers, between pineapple juice and pepsin, were not statistically significantly different (p>0.05). The larvae from pepsin and pineapple juice digestion were cultivated on BME for 7 days; the survival rates were not significantly differen

Gnathostomiasis is primarily a disease of the skin characterized as creeping eruption or mobile erythema. However, larval Gnathostoma sometimes migrate into an unexpected site to elicit serious illness. Here we describe a case of colonic ileus caused by Gnathostoma doloresi. The patient was a 57-year-old man living in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, which is known as an area endemic for this parasite. One week after having eaten a few slices of the flesh of a snake (Agkistrodon halys), he developed severe abdominal pain. An abdominal radiograph revealed multiple gas-fluid levels with a distended b

We conducted a parasitological study to identify nematodes infecting the gonads of bigeye barracuda Sphyraena forsteri Cuvier (Sphyraenidae) caught in the West Philippine Sea, off the Mariveles coast, Bataan Province, the Philippine archipelago. Males and very tiny nongravid female philometrid nematodes were collected from the ovaries of the fish. Based on light and scanning electron microscope observations, and supported by molecular analyses of the partial nucleotide sequences of the 18S small subunit ribosomal DNA, the philometrid nematode was determined to be a new species belonging to the
