CONTEXT: Educational interventions can help individuals increase their knowledge of available contraceptive methods, enabling them to make informed decisions and use contraception correctly. This review updates a previous review of contraceptive education.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Multiple databases were searched for articles published March 2011-November 2016. Primary outcomes were knowledge, participation in and satisfaction/comfort with decision making, attitudes toward contraception, and selection of more effective methods. The scope of this study is to analyze the determinants of the use of appetite suppressants (amfepramone, femproporex, mazindol and sibutramine) through the estimation of a dynamic panel dataset model for the Brazilian state capitals and the Federal District (DF) in the period from 2009 to 2011. The results show that consumption of appetite suppressants did not follow the geographic distribution of overweight and obese individuals across the capitals and DF. There is a recurrent consumption of appetite inhibitors, in which 79% of the current consumption of these drugs is explained by past consu

The United States Congress directed the Department of Justice to conduct an exercise engaging key personnel in the management of mock chemical, biological, or cyberterrorist attacks. The resulting exercise was called "TOPOFF," named for its engagement of top officials of the United States government. This article offers a number of medical and public health observations and lessons discovered during the bioterrorism component of the exercise. The TOPOFF exercise illuminated problematic issues of leadership and decision-making; the difficulties of prioritization and distribution of scarce resou

Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollment among patients receiving dialysis has surged following the passage of the 21st Century Cures Act, which lifted prior restrictions on enrollment. As MA becomes the plurality payer for dialysis, understanding its implications for patients, providers, and policymakers is critical. MA offers out-of-pocket spending caps and additional services not covered under fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare. Some plans also prioritize care coordination, which may improve patient outcomes. However, concerns remain regarding limited provider networks, prior authorization barriers,

IMPORTANCE: Low-value care is a persistent problem with direct and cascading harms. Telemedicine is now commonly used and may reduce low-value testing by introducing barriers to completing tests at a given visit or expand opportunities for low-value testing by contributing to higher visit volumes.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify the association between telemedicine adoption and low-value testing among fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cohort study using 100% fee-for-service Medicare claims data, US health systems were divided into quartiles based on 20

NCRP Report No. 180, 'Management of Exposure to Ionizing Radiation: Radiation Protection Guidance for the United States (2018)' was developed by Council Committee 1. The report builds and expands upon previous recommendations of NCRP and ICRP, covering exposure to radiation and radioactive materials for five exposure categories: occupational, public, medical, emergency workers, and nonhuman biota. Actions to add, increase, reduce or remove a source of exposure to humans require justification. Optimisation of protection universally applies, taking into account societal, economic, and environmen

The 2009 H1N1 pandemic stimulated a nationwide response that included a mass vaccination effort coordinated at the federal, state, and local levels. This article examines a sampling of state and local efforts during the pandemic in order to better prepare for future public health emergencies involving mass distribution, dispensing, and administration of medical countermeasures. In this analysis, the authors interviewed national, state, and local leaders to gain a better understanding of the accomplishments and challenges of H1N1 vaccination programs during the 2009-10 influenza season. In 1991, Amway formed an industrial hazardous materials (hazmat) team in order to respond quickly and efficiently to potential chemical spills. The company's goals were, and still are today, to protect employees, the environment and the local community, and to reduce the amount of resulting downtime. In 1991, the hazmat team was very well funded, enabling it to become a discrete department with its own management staff and nearly 100 hazmat volunteers. Due to changes in the business climate, Amway reorganised in 2000/01, and the hazmat team became part of a company that incorporated contract w

OBJECTIVES: This investigation describes terrorism preparedness among U.S. office-based physicians and their staffs in identification and diagnosis of terrorism-related conditions, training methods and sources, and assistance with diagnosis and reporting.
METHODS: The National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) is an annual national probability survey of approximately 3,000 U.S. nonfederal, office-based physicians. Terrorism preparedness items were added in 2003 and 2004.
RESULTS: About 40 percent of physicians or their staffs received training for anthrax or smallpox, but less than one-

Since September 2001 Congress has allocated approximately dollars 3 billion to strengthen the public health infrastructure. To achieve this goal, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) allocates funding to states, which distribute funds to local jurisdictions. Evidence-based measures to assess public health preparedness are lacking. We used an expert-panel process to develop performance measures, based on the ten essential public health services. We developed and conducted tabletop exercises in California to evaluate preparedness to detect and respond to a hypothetical small

Since the attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States, and the subsequent anthrax scares, the approach to preparing for and dealing with major incidents has had to be re-thought. Major incident planning, training and preparedness, once the domain of NHS senior managers and frontline A&E staff, is now the business of all NHS nurses. This article provides the theoretical knowledge needed by nurses to operate at the scene of a pre-hospital major incident.

Long COVID is an infection-associated chronic condition that can cause a wide variety of symptoms and long-term functional impairments. While investigation into curative treatment is ongoing, current standard management of Long COVID relies heavily on rehabilitative care by physical, occupational, and speech therapists. Unfortunately, many persons with Long COVID encounter financial barriers to receiving rehabilitative care, especially because some state Medicaid programs and safety net health insurance plans do not cover one-on-one rehabilitation visits. Shared Medical Appointments (SMAs) are

BACKGROUND: Extensive evidence indicates that Collaborative Chronic Care Models (CCMs) improve outcome in chronic medical conditions and depression treated in primary care. Beginning with an evidence synthesis which indicated that CCMs are also effective for multiple mental health conditions, we describe a multistage process that translated this knowledge into evidence-based health system change in the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: In 2010, recognizing that there had been numerous CCM trials for a wide variety of mental health conditions, we conducted an evidence
