Encephalitis lethargica (EL) syndrome was classically described by Von Economo and has somnolent-ophthalmoplegic, hyperkinetic, and amyostatic-akinetic forms. We describe 2 recent cases of EL characterized by an acute encephalitis with mixed movement disorders (dystonia-Parkinsonism plus stereotypy) and psychiatric disorders (agitated catatonia, coprolalia, and echo phenomena). Both patients suffered concurrent hyperkinetic and Parkinsonian features resulting in therapeutic challenges. Bradykinetic features responded to dopamine replacement therapy and both patients also had adverse affects to

Stereotyped behaviours occur frequently in blind children. Most authors attribute stereotyped mannerisms to factors such as hospitalisation, motor limitations, and reduced capacity for exploration. There seems to be a specific association between blindness and behavioural mannerisms, such as eye pressing and eye poking, which have been observed in children with peripheral blindness. We studied the prevalence of stereotyped motor behaviours in a sample of congenitally blind children with and without other neurodevelopmental disabilities in order to assess the types and features of such stereoty

We evaluated, at our institute, 70 females with Rett syndrome between 2 1/2 to 34 1/2 years old. This provided an opportunity of observing the natural history of this condition. The evolution of a subacute encephalopathy of very early onset, maximizing in the second year of life, with slow recovery and devastating sequelae, was recognized. The hyperorality, visual auditory and tactile agnosia with aphasia and seizures resembled symptoms described in human Kluver Bucy syndrome. Over interpretation of behavioral abnormalities as seizures was common. Scoliosis was not a necessary concomitant of a

Concurrent activation of dopamine D1 and D2 receptors (D1 and D2) is required for the expression of certain dopamine (DA)-mediated responses, such as climbing and stereotyped behaviors. Such interactions between D1 and D2 (i.e. D1/D2 synergism) represent an important aspect of dopaminergic function and plasticity. The D2 receptor exists in two isoforms: D2L and D2S. We have generated mice that selectively lack D2L (D2L-/-). Here we showed that treatment with the indirect DA agonist amphetamine, the direct DA agonist apomorphine, or combination of D1 and D2 agonists elicited intense climbing in

BACKGROUND: Tic disorder (TD) frequently co-occurs with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and is associated with greater symptom severity and limited treatment options. Qiangzhi Fang is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula that has been clinically used for neurobehavioral disorders, but its experimental evidence and mechanisms remain insufficiently characterized.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the behavioral effects of Qiangzhi Fang in a drug-induced rat model of TD comorbid with ADHD and to explore potential striatal molecular mechanisms.
METHODS: A drug-induced TD+ADHD

Neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are characterized by persistent changes in communication and social interaction, as well as restricted and stereotyped patterns of behavior. The complex etiology of these disorders possibly combines the effects of multiple genes and environmental factors. Hence, exposure to insecticides such as imidacloprid (IMI) has been used to replicate the changes observed in these disorders. Lutein is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and is associated with neu

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto encephalopathy (HE) is a rare condition associated with autoimmune thyroid disease. We aimed to report the youngest patient with Down syndrome and HE with an unusual presentation.
CASE REPORT: Six years and six months old boy with Down syndrome admitted due to loss of speech. His physical development was appropriate for his age and had no goiter. Neurological examination revealed the absence of eye contact and stereotypic movements. Autism spectrum disorder was considered based on his result on Gilliam autism evaluation scale. He had subclinical hypothyroidism with marke

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the involvement of nod-like receptor pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in schizophrenia-like behaviour in young animals exposed to maternal immune activation (MIA).
METHODS: To this aim, on the 15th gestational day, the females received an injection of lipopolysaccharides. When the animals completed 7, 14 and 45 postnatal days, they were killed and the whole brain was dissected for biochemical analysis. Animals with 45 postnatal days were submitted to behavioural tests of locomotor activity, social interaction and stereotyped movements.
RESULTS: It

Tics are rapid, repetitive, stereotyped movements or vocalizations that arise from neurobiological dysfunction and are influenced by environmental factors. Although persons with tic disorders often experience aversive social reactions in response to tics, little is known about the behavioral effects of such consequences. Along several dimensions, the present study compared the effects of two treatments on tics: response cost (RC) and differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO). Four children with Tourette syndrome were exposed to free-to-tic baseline, DRO, RC, and quasibaseline rebound

Clinical features and results of the blood DNA analysis are reported of a child affected with a distinct phenotype of the late infantile form of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (LINCL). He was affected by microcephaly and hypotonia since the fourth month of life; acquisition of motor and language abilities was severely impaired, and a disorder of communication with stereotyped movements followed. By age four, he developed signs and symptoms of progressive myoclonic encephalopathy along with motor and cognitive deterioration. Extrapyramidal signs were associated with neuroradiological findings o

Two girls are described who had normal physical and mental development during the first few months of life, documented on home movies in one. Gross motor development slowed during the second half of the first year followed by loss of acquired vocabulary and deterioration of fine motor skills. Linear growth and head growth decelerated. Stereotyped hand movements appeared around 2 to 3 years of age. Early appropriate social responses faded into a vacant stare. Neurological development was characterized by early hypotonia followed by ataxia and finally spasticity. One girl has been followed throu

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a neurological disorder that mostly affects females, with a frequency of 1 in 10,000 to 20,000 live birth cases. Symptoms include stereotyped hand movements; impaired learning, language, and communication skills; sudden loss of speech; reduced lifespan; retarded growth; disturbance of sleep and breathing; seizures; autism; and gait apraxia. Pneumonia is the most common cause of death for patients with Rett syndrome, with a survival rate of 77.8% at 25 years of age. Survival into the fifth decade is typical in Rett syndrome, and the leading cause of death is cardiorespira

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome is caused by mutations in the X-linked MECP2 gene, encoding MeCP2 protein. This protein is essential for the transcription and repression of other genes and is important for the development and plasticity of the central nervous system. Children with Rett syndrome initially develop normally but after a few months their development deteriorates.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The case describes a girl aged 3 years 7 months whose development had initially been normal but then stagnated and was followed by a phase of regression. Her speech was lost and she developed severe dyspraxia

Recently, de novo mutations in TBL1XR1 were found in two patients with autism spectrum disorders. Here, we report on a Japanese girl presenting with West syndrome, Rett syndrome-like and autistic features. Her initial development was normal until she developed a series of spasms at 5 months of age. Electroencephalogram at 7 months showed a pattern of hypsarrhythmia, which led to a diagnosis of West syndrome. Stereotypic hand movements appeared at 8 months of age, and autistic features such as deficits in communication, hyperactivity and excitability were observed later, at 4 years and 9 months

We clinically assessed patients meeting international criteria for frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) for the presence and characteristics of stereotypies. Of 32 subjects with FTLD (50% women), 19 (60%) had stereotypies. The majority of patients with stereotypies were female (68%). The median age of symptom onset suggestive of FTLD was 58 years (range: 37-74), with a mean time to stereotypy onset of 2.1 years. In all cases, the stereotypies were simple. There were no differences in the age of FTLD onset, functional imaging results, neuropsychological test scores or frequency of mood diso

Hypothesized risk factors for psychostimulant, amphetamine, and cocaine abuse include dopamine (DA) receptor polymorphisms, HIV infection, schizophrenia, drug-induced paranoias, and movement disorders; however, the molecular, cellular, and biochemical mechanisms that predispose to drug sensitivity or drive the development of addiction are incompletely understood. Using the Borna disease rat, an animal model of viral-induced encephalopathy wherein sensitivity to the locomotor and stereotypic behavioral effects of d-amphetamine and cocaine is enhanced (Solbrig et al., 1994, 1998), we identify a

In pharmacological screening amisulpride produces no catalepsy, no inhibition of stereotypic movements, yet a blockade of drug-induced vomiting. During an open clinical trial lasting 4 weeks, 14 patients (13 schizophrenics) were treated with the compound. The (BPRS-) syndromes anxiety/depression, thought disorder, activity, hostility and the global score showed significant improvement. With the AMDP system significant changes were seen in the paranoid-hallucinatory, manic, depressive and hostility syndromes as well as in the global score. No changes were revealed in anergia (BPRS) and apathia

Neuroleptics having dopamine receptor-blocking properties are frequently responsible for the development of movement disorders. This has been known for many years as these adverse events were identified soon after the introduction of these drugs for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Parkinsonism, acute dystonic reactions, akathisia, and tardive dyskinesias are the different clinical presentations of these disorders. Tardive dyskinesia is the most problematic among them as it may persist even after discontinuation of the offending drug, and become an irreversible phenomenon. The term "tar

Rodent striatal microinfusions have been suggested as a model for assessing the behavioral effects induced by antineuronal antibodies. We used this approach to evaluate the proposed autoimmune etiology for Tourette syndrome (TS) and pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infection (PANDAS). Sera were assessed from patients with TS (n = 9) preselected based on the presence of elevated enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay optical densities against putamen homogenate and sera from patients with PANDAS (n = 8), selected from a larger group assayed for antibodies

BACKGROUND: Tardive syndromes are a group of delayed-onset abnormal involuntary movement disorders induced by a dopamine receptor blocking agent. There are several phenomenologically distinct types of TS.
REVIEW SUMMARY: The term tardive dyskinesia has been used to refer to the TS that presents with rapid, repetitive, stereotypic movements mostly involving the oral, buccal, and lingual areas. Tardive dystonia can be focal, segmental, or generalized. It commonly affects the face and neck followed by the arms and trunk. It usually results in retrocollis when it involves the neck and trunk archi
