One of the most common oral diseases affecting people wearing dentures is chronic atrophic candidiasis or denture stomatitis (DS). The aim of the paper is to provide an update on the pathogenesis, presentation, and management of DS in general dental practice settings. A comprehensive review of the literature published in the last ten years was undertaken using multiple databases, including PubMed via MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus. The eligible articles were analyzed to identify evidence-based strategies for the management of DS. Despite its multifactorial nature, the leading cause of DS is the d…

AIM: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a painful and common ulcerative form that can pose a diagnostic challenge. In fact, similar oral ulcers can appear secondary to a variety of well-defined pathological conditions. Thus, the purpose of this work was to update the current knowledge about RAS METHODS: A narrative review is presented aiming to clarify the extensive differential diagnosis of RAS and its management.
CONCLUSION: As a first aid in relieving the pain, topical applications of corticosteroids, antibiotics, and analgesics are highly recommended, while systemic therapy of RAS sho…

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a mucocutaneous condition characterized by chronic relapsing and remitting oral ulcers and erosions. This condition remains under-recognized among dermatopathologists, possibly because of common misdiagnosis as oral erosive lichen planus (LP). We report five cases of CUS in order to raise awareness of this uncommon condition. All patients presented with desquamative gingivitis and/or oral erosions, with biopsies showing lichenoid mucositis and epithelial nuclear IgG deposition on direct immunofluorescence. Recognition of the characteristic direct immunofl…

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a poorly understood disease with clinical and histologic overlap with lichen planus (LP). Unlike classic LP, direct immunofluorescence (DIF) studies in cases of CUS exhibit a granular pattern of IgG in nuclei of basal and parabasal cells. This study assesses the demographic, clinical, histologic, and DIF features of CUS. It is important to differentiate CUS from LP and other vesiculobullous diseases (VBD) because lesions of CUS are resistant to steroid therapy, which is typically used to control LP and VBD. A literature review and IRB-approved retrospecti…

An 81-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus presented with signs of orbital cellulitis and a gangrenous ulcer on the right palate. Biopsy analysis confirmed a diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis. Surgical debridement of necrotic tissues and enucleation of the right eye were performed. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia was isolated from the specimens. The patient remained stable under antibiotic therapy and underwent reconstructive surgery. To the best of our knowledge, this represents a rare case of orbital necrotizing fasciitis developing secondary to S. maltophilia infection. Orbital necrotizing f

BACKGROUND: Aphthous stomatitis is a painful, recurrent disease of the oral mucous membrane. Silver nitrate sticks have been used for a long time to provide pain relief for the duration of an aphthous ulceration, with only one application. Silver nitrate causes chemical cauterization and increases the depth of injury.
OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of chemical cautery with silver nitrate in reducing pain of aphthous ulceration and to determine if this treatment shortens or prolongs healing.
METHODS: In a randomized, patient-blinded, placebo-controlled study, 97 patients with painful minor o…

INTRODUCTION: The aetiology of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) remains unknown. An association between RAS and coeliac diseases (CD) has previously been suggested, but the supporting evidence remains equivocal. The aim of the present study was to determine the likely frequency of CD in a large cohort of patients with well-defined RAS, by detailed haematological and serological analysis, including the detection of anti-endomysium and anti-reticulin antibodies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 87 patients with minor RAS. Full blood counts and the presence of IgA anti-endomysial an…

Chondro-osseous respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartomas (COREAHs) are benign hamartomas very rarely seen in the nasal cavity. We are presenting a case of COREAH in a 39-year-old female that was managed surgically. As the clinical history and gross and radiological features of COREAH resemble those of other aggressive diseases, this case report puts emphasis on considering COREAH as a differential diagnosis to avoid unnecessary surgical interventions.

Behçet's disease is a rare condition in children and characterized by a triad of recurrent aphthous stomatitis, genital ulceration and uveitis. The aetiology is unknown, but systemic vasculitis is the main pathology. The oral lesions resemble Sutton disease, which is another form of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) that composes approximately 10 per cent of cases and is known as major aphthous stomatitis, can easily be overlooked if the other symptoms are not questioned. We presented a 12-year-old girl with the initial complaint of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. During the follow-up period,…

In the present study, the potential involvement of Streptococcus oralis in the aetiology of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) was investigated using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Biopsies from 28 RAS patients were analysed, in addition to 20 oral lichen planus (OLP) and 13 normal biopsies that were used as controls. PCR was carried out using a primer pair that targets the D-alanine:D-alanine ligase gene and detects DNA from both S. oralis and the closely related species Streptococcus mitis. Discrimination between these two species was achieved by digestion of PCR products with the res…

Little information is available about the acquired pellicle layer that is formed on denture surfaces or its role in regulating microbial colonization of the prosthetic surface. Because denture-induced stomatitis is associated with increased numbers of Candida albicans and other microorganisms on the denture surface, the acquired denture pellicle (ADP) may play a role in modulating this colonization. This study examined and compared ADP from healthy patients and patients with stomatitis by chemical and immunochemical methods. The ADP was found to be composed of a selectively adsorbed layer cont…

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is characterized by recurring ulcers in the oral mucosa as abnormality of the immune response, autoimmune or abnormal immunological reaction to antigens of oral bacteria. This study was conducted on 25 patients 15 suffering RAS of the minor form and 10 of the major form and 15 student as control. The T lymphocytes were determined by the monoclonal antibodies (OKT) using the indirect immunofluorescent technique of Hoffman percentage of cells having surface fluorescence was calculated and the monoclonal antibody coated cells visualized and enumerated. It was c…

Patients who are hypersensitive to mercury may develop stomatitis on mucosa adjacent to amalgam dental restorations. This reaction, an allergic contact dermatitis, often resembles lichen planus but is distinguished by its location adjacent to restorations. Widespread dermatitis and urticaria are also possible.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral disorder, however, despite detailed clinical, immunologic, hematologic and microbiologic investigation, the etiology of RAS remains unknown. At present, topical steroids and antimicrobial mouth rinses are the mainstays of treatment, but there is still no means of preventing recurrence of the oral ulceration.
