Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus; GBS) is a Gram-positive coccus. It has emerged as a cause of significant infections in non-pregnant adults, particularly neonates and individuals aged 65 years or older, which can lead to fatal outcomes. Streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome (STSS) is an acute illness, which is mainly caused by exotoxin-producing strains of Streptococcus pyogenes and may result in death. In this report, we present a fatal non-pregnant case of STSS induced by GBS in a 45-year-old healthy female. The patient presented with fever, polyarthralgia, myalgia, and ski…

Streptococcus agalactiae poses a threat due to increasing antimicrobial resistance and the potential for invasive disease. We isolated a sequence type 1665 strain nonsusceptible to β-lactams and resistant to macrolides, tetracyclines, and fluoroquinolones, harboring previously uncharacterized PBP2X variants, highlighting the need for genomic surveillance to guide treatment and infection control.

Streptococcus agalactiae was confirmed as the etiologic agent of streptococcosis in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) from Campeche, Mexico, during a cross-sectional investigation of eight semi-intensive farms (2021-2022) that yielded virulent strains in a challenge assay. Standard bacteriology, histopathology, API-20 Strep phenotyping, one-step PCR, and real-time PCR confirmed S. agalactiae in five farms (62.5%). Gross and histological lesions were characterised by mid-axial and peduncular muscle abscesses, extensive myonecrosis, granuloma formation, polyserositis, and occasional suppurati…

Delafloxacin is one of the newest fluoroquinolones with a unique structure, determining better pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties, a better safety profile, and a broader spectrum of activity compared to older quinolones. We aimed to examine the susceptibility rates of delafloxacin, the genetic mechanisms contributing to resistance, and the serotype distribution in both invasive and non-invasive Streptococcus agalactiae strains. A total of 301 streptococcal strains were tested for minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) to delafloxacin. All delafloxacin-resistant strains were subject…

Bacteria possess the ability to develop diverse and ingenious strategies to outwit the host immune system, and proteases are one of the many weapons employed by bacteria. This study sought to identify S. agalactiae additional serine protease and determine its role in virulence. The S. agalactiae THN0901 genome features one S8 family serine peptidase B (SfpB), acting as a secreted and externally exposed entity. A S8 family serine peptidase mutant strain (ΔsfpB) and complement strain (CΔsfpB) were generated through homologous recombination. Compared to the wild-type strain THN0901, the absorptio

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) is an important human and animal pathogen. In recent years, the number of streptococcal isolates resistant to antimicrobial agents has increased in many parts of the world. Various mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and capsular serotypes of GBS with different geographical distributions can be found. A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2021 to May 2024. The survey included 257 GBS isolates from Bulgarian inpatients and outpatients with streptococcal infections. Antibiotic resistance genes and capsular seroty…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is one of the most important causes of neonatal diseases and postpartum fever. GBS infection can be transmitted from the infected mother to her baby during delivery. This bacterium is also involved in causing urinary tract infections and asymptomatic bacteriuria, pyelonephritis, cystitis and urethritis. In addition to capsule, Pilus is known as a virulence factor of GBS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of pilus islands and antibiotic resistance in GBS isolated from urine of pregnant women in Yazd, Iran.

Streptococcus agalactiae causes neonatal meningitis and can also infect the adult central nervous system (CNS). S. agalactiae can cross the blood-brain barrier but may also reach the CNS via other paths. Several species of bacteria can directly invade the CNS via the olfactory and trigeminal nerves, which extend between the nasal cavity and brain and injury to the nasal epithelium can increase the risk/severity of infection. Preterm birth is associated with increased risk of S. agalactiae infection and with nasogastric tube feeding. The tubes, also used in adults, can cause nasal injuries and …

Perinatal infection with Streptococcus agalactiae, or Group B Streptococcus (GBS), is associated with preterm birth, neonatal sepsis, and stillbirth. Here, we study the interactions of GBS with macrophages, essential sentinel immune cells that defend the gravid reproductive tract. Transcriptional analyses of GBS-macrophage co-cultures reveal enhanced expression of a gene encoding a putative metal resistance determinant, cadD. Deletion of cadD reduces GBS survival in macrophages, metal efflux, and resistance to metal toxicity. In a mouse model of ascending infection during pregnancy, the ΔcadD …

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) vertical transmission causes fetal and neonatal colonization and diseases. However, there is scarcity of data in low-income countries including Ethiopia. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 98 GBS positive mothers, and their newborns to find proportion of vertical transmission. GBS was identified from swabs by using recommended methods and vertical transmission at birth was confirmed by the culture of body surface swabs of newborns within 30 minutes following birth. GBS positivity among swabbed specimens collected for other purposes was 160/1540 (10.4%); 98 were

Invasive Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) infections are increasingly common among neonates and the elderly. Therefore, GBS surveillance for better antibiotic treatment and prophylaxis strategies are needed. We retrospectively evaluated the clinical aspects of invasive infections and the phenotypic and genetic diversity of infectious isolates from Nara, Japan, collected between 2007 and 2016, by using information from hospital records. GBS strains collected from the blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures were evaluated for capsular types, multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), antibiotic susceptibi…

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae or Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality resulting in septicaemia, bacteraemia and meningitis. Long term problems in children range from loss of hearing to mental retardation. While Intrapartum Antibiotic Prophylaxis (IAP) has reduced the incidence of S. agalactiae infection, it still remains the leading cause of disease in neonates. GBS has ten capsular types whose distribution varies across the world. Therefore, this study sought to determine the prevalence of GBS in Namibia and South Africa amongst pregnant …

In a defined geographic area, during a 3-month period, 914 food products were screened for Streptococcus agalactiae, and S. agalactiae strains isolated from bloodstream infections (BSI) in nonpregnant adults were collected. Eleven S. agalactiae strains were isolated from 1.2% of food products, with high rates in pastries (7.0%) and seafood products (11.8%). These findings indicate that S. agalactiae is a food product contaminant. Seven S. agalactiae BSI were observed in nonpregnant adults representing an incidence of 0.015/100 admissions. The distribution of strains in serotypes did not differ…
