Catatonia associated with pediatric postoperative cerebellar mutism syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the presence of catatonia in cases of pediatric postoperative cerebellar mutism syndrome (PPCMS). METHOD: A systema … , and 44.5% DSM-5. All patients presented with mutism. The next most frequent signs were immobility/stupor (77.3%), withdrawal (35.3%), mannerisms (23.5%), and excitement/agitation (18.5%). Most cases presented with stuporous catatonia (75.6%). Catatonia most frequently occurred following resection of medulloblastoma (64.7%). Preoperative hydrocephalus o …

DOUBLE LUMEN TECHNIQUE - ENDOTRACHEAL TUBE GUIDED LEVIN TUBE INSERTION TECHNIQUE.

This described the Double Lumen Technique (DLT) - an endotracheal tube-guided Levin tube insertion technique, which was originally introduced in 1987. It is designed for patients who have repeatedly failed due to kinking of the Levin tube in their oropharyngeal cavity, caused by incooperation of swallowing a Levin tube, particularly in those with stupor or comatose mentality. The main concept of the DLT is to reinforce the flexibility of a Levin tube by inserting it into a more elastic tube, the endotracheal tube (E-tube). The combination of the Levin tube and the E-tube allow it to pass throu…

Neurosurgical management of cerebellar hemorrhage.

Controversy remains concerning the management of patients with cerebellar hemorrhage. In this study the records of 42 patients were reviewed. In 60% of them the signs of brainstem compression and upward transtentorial herniation were found. The level of consciousness was found to be consistent with the radiologic finding of the ambient cistern on the CT scan. Complete compression of the ambient cistern was always associated with coma, a partially compressed ambient cistern with stupor or drowsiness, while a normally shaped ambient cistern was associated with a normal level of consciousness. Im…

[A statistical comparison of the different factor analyses of the AMP-system (author's transl)].

The intercorrelations of five different factor-analytically derived syndrome solutions of the AMP-system were computed. The syndromes were based on the psychopathological symptoms of 2,269 patients on admission to the psychiatric clinic of the Free University of Berlin. The syndromes which were similar in content in the solutions of different clinics could be shown to intercorrelate quite highly. Only the different syndromes of stupor and obsession-compulsion did not show the same high degree of similarity. Between the syndromes of the solution of one clinic as well as between the solutions of…

[Diabetic ketoacidosis (causes, clinico-biochemical correlations and terminology problems)].

The clinical and biochemical data obtained in 85 patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) are presented. DKA is an acute exacerbation of diabetes, a characteristic clinico-biochemical syndrome including increasing thirst, polyuria, adynamia, dryness of the skin and mucous membranes, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, occasionally abdominal pain, Kussmaul's breath, acetone odour in the exhaled air, circulatory collapse, prerenal azotemia, stupor, coma. Glycemia level exceeds 19 mmol/l, blood pH over 7.3. The disease is marked by neutrophilic leukocytosis, blood count shift to the left, elevated blood…

Catatonia following biparietal infarction with spontaneous recovery.

We describe a case of catatonic stupor following simultaneous biparietal infarction. The patient recovered, a result not previously described in catatonia caused by this pattern of cerebral infarct.

Asylum-seeking children with resignation syndrome: catatonia or traumatic withdrawal syndrome?

In the beginning of the 2000s, an increasing number of asylum-seeking children in Sweden fell into a stuporous condition. In the present study, we report 46 consecutive children with the most severe form of this illness where the children were unable to give any response at all, did not react to pain, cold or touching, could not be supported to sit or stand on their feet, could not do anything when requested, and in most cases had enuresis/encopresis. A minority of the children came from war zones (n = 8, 17.4%). A majority belonged to an ethnic or religious minority (n = 32, 69.6%) in their h…

Measuring catatonia motor behavior with objective instrumentation.

OBJECTIVE: Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome, with important psychomotor features, associated with schizophrenia and other psychiatri … associated with lower activity levels (AL). Higher scores on single BFCRS items such as immobility/stupor or staring were linked to lower AL (immobility/stupor: F = 17.388, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.175; staring: F = 7.849, p = 0.001, η2 = 0.162) and lower metabolic equivalents of task (MET). Catatonia and mania: patterns of cerebral dysfunction.

We performed a factor analysis on research data from 55 consecutive hospitalized psychiatric patients who showed one or more of eight catatonic motor features. Two factors were extracted, accounting for 32% of the variance. Factor 1 (mutism, negativism, stupor) corresponded to the clinical syndrome of negativistic stupor and was unrelated to diagnosis, sex, age at onset, family history, or treatment response. Factor 2 (mutism, stereotypy, catalepsy, automatic obedience) corresponded to the classical description of catatonia, was associated with a research diagnosis of mania, and tended (p less…

THE TERMINAL APHONIA OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT, A SILENT HERALD OF AN ORDINARY DEATH.

Even though the absence of the body prevents sure conclusions, the death of Alexander the Great remains a hot topic of retrospective diagnosis. Due to the serious mishandling of ancient sources, the scientific literature had Alexander dying of every possible natural cause. In previous works, the hypothesis that typhoid fever killed Alexander was proposed, based on the presence of the remittent fever typical of this disease in the narrations of Plutarch and Arrian. Here we provide additional evidence for the presence of stupor, the second distinctive symptom of typhoid fever. In fact, based on …
