Effect of reading with reversed speech on frequency of stuttering in adults.

This study explored the effect of reading with reversed speech on the frequency of stuttering. Eight adults who stutter served as participants and read four 300-syllable passages while listening to three types of speech stimuli: normal speech (choral reading), reversed speech at normal speed, reversed speech at half speed, and a control condition of no auditory feedback. A repeated-measures analysis of variance showed a significant decrease in stuttering frequency in the choral reading condition but not in reversed speech at normal and half speed. However, the reversed speech at half-speed con…

Lexical development and retrieval in treating children who stutter.

This article describes the role of lexical acquisition in stuttering by examining the research on word learning and interactions between semantics and syntax in typically developing children and children who stutter. The potential effects of linguistic mismatches, or dysynchronies in language skills, on the possible onset and development of stuttering are discussed. The article concludes with assessment and treatment considerations.

The road to efficient and effective stuttering management: information for physicians.

Physicians are often the first point of contact when children's speech begins to be disrupted by stuttering behaviors such as sound repetitions and prolongations. For this reason, we feel it is important that they are accurately informed with regards to the nature of stuttering and the available treatment options before making referrals to speech-language pathologists. Stuttering is by definition, an involuntary disorder and remains that way throughout life. Its cause is still unknown and the only true form of remission appears to be the natural, spontaneous recovery that occurs in up to 80% o…

Visuoperceptual and visuomotor deficits in developmental stutterers: an exploratory study.

Although the cause of stuttering is unknown, there is strong evidence for it being a neuromotor disorder characterised by an abnormality of higher control encompassing not only speech but other motor systems. The aim of this exploratory study was to look for the presence of non-speech/language deficits--in particular, visuomotor and visuoperceptual deficits--in persons who stutter. Twelve moderate to severe developmental stutterers were compared with a group of fluent speakers, matched for age and sex, on a range of computerized sensory-motor tasks. These tasks covered various aspects of visuo…

Successful communication for children who stutter: finding the balance.

For many school-age children, stuttering consists of more than just speech disfluencies, physical tension, and struggle. Therefore, successful therapy for stuttering should address more than just these observable characteristics. In addition to working on fluency goals, clinicians can help children (as well as the people in the child's environment) reduce negative reactions to stuttering and increase their tolerance and acceptance of their speaking abilities. By treating the entire stuttering disorder in this way, clinicians can help children reduce barriers to successful communication and imp…

Variations in the relative speeds of orofacial structures with stuttering severity.

Stuttering can be characterized in part as a disorder in the coordination of different muscle systems. In light of basic aspects of orofacial physiology and development, the speeds of the lips and tongue relative to the jaw may be an important dimension for evaluating motor coordination among persons who stutter (PWS). To test this idea, an electromagnetic system was used to obtain measures of lip, tongue, and jaw speed in 38 adults (29 PWS and 9 normally fluent speakers, NFS) as they repeated a simple speech utterance at a normal rate. Using categorical ratings of stuttering severity, ratios …

Considerations for conducting group intervention with adults who stutter.

With recent changing trends in healthcare delivery and reimbursement, the focus on more efficient and cost-effective intervention has become increasingly important. A summary of desired clinician skills and responsibilities reported in the literature are presented along with information on structuring group intervention. Preliminary findings and a rationale for conducting speech therapy in a group environment with several adults who suffer are presented. In addition, findings and perceptions gleaned from the authors' experience in conducting group treatment with persons who stutter are also di

Attempting to ameliorate student therapists' negative stereotype of the stutterer.

This paper reports on attempts to change student therapists' negative stereotyping of 'the stutterer'. Awareness of the negative stereotype and knowledge about the possible effects of this on therapy were not effective in changing attitudes. Knowledge of alternative meanings of stuttering, different models of therapy and theories of change, as well as experimenting with personal change, were effective to a limited degree in changing the direction of negative attitudes. Relevant experience of working with people who stutter was also important for some student therapists in beginning to change t…

Defining clinically significant changes in the treatment of child stutterers.

This study established a clinically significant criterion to evaluate outcomes of children's stuttering therapy. 30 stutterers, ages 6 to 15 years, and 30 non-stutterers served as subjects. Speech samples were recorded and the percentage of stuttered syllables and rate of speech analyzed. According to Jacobson and Revenstorf's procedure, 3% of stuttered syllables and 160 syllables per minute should become the target behaviors in the treatment of children's stuttering.

Behavioral and nonbehavioral variables in the measurement of stutterers' communication attitudes.

The influence of the behavioral variables, stuttering and speech, and the nonbehavioral variables, feelings or attitudes regarding speech, on stutterers' responses to the modified Erickson Communication Attitude Scale (known as the S24) was investigated in two studies. In the first study, 19 adult stutterers answered an amended version of the S24 Scale; it permitted subjects to nominate the basis of their response to each item on the Scale. The findings indicated that subjects regarded their responses to Scale items as largely influenced by their judgments about their stuttering and speech beh…

[Role of psychotherapy in the complex treatment of children who stutter].

In 30 preschool children the efficacy of various psychotherapeutic methods in the treatment of spasmophemia was estimated. The effect of group psychotherapy, play therapy and age-modified variants of autogenous training is described. Importance of family psychotherapy is determined, and attempts at specifying the most typical pathological family situations are made. It is noted that the psychotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of spasmophemia at the preschool age, and contributes to a stable social adaptation of the child.

Further development and validation of the Unhelpful Thoughts and Beliefs About Stuttering (UTBAS) scales: relationship to anxiety and social phobia among adults who stutter.

BACKGROUND: In an initial validation study, the Unhelpful Thoughts and Beliefs About Stuttering (UTBAS I) scale, demonstrated excellent psychometric properties as a self-report measure of the frequency of unhelpful cognitions associated with social anxiety for adults who stutter. AIMS: The aim was to further validate the original UTBAS I scale, and to develop two additional scales to assess beliefs (UTBAS II) and anxiety (UTBAS III) associated with negative thoughts. METHODS & PROCEDURES: A total of 140 adults seeking speech-restructuring treatment for stuttering completed the original UTBAS…

Understanding social anxiety in adolescents who stutter: A multi-informant study of the roles of stuttering severity, parenting styles, social participation and speech avoidance.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents who stutter are at increased risk for social anxiety, yet the factors underlying this vulnerability remain unclear. This study examined the contributions of stuttering severity, parenting styles, social participation, and avoidance of speech situations to social anxiety among adolescents who stutter compared with adolescents who do not stutter. METHOD: Participants were 158 adolescents (79 who stutter and 79 who do not stutter) and their mothers. Adolescents who do not stutter were recruited as close friends or classmates of adolescents who stutter to enhance group com…

Studying Associations Among Mental Health and PsyCap in Persons With Stuttering.

This cross-sectional, psychometric validation and comparative analysis study investigates the associations between mental health and Psychological Capital (PsyCap) in persons with stuttering (PWS; n = 60) and fluent speakers (FS; n = 60), while validating the Tamil translations of the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF) and Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ). Exploratory Factor Analyses, Cronbach's alphas, and item-total correlations were used to evaluate the scales with a sample size of 120 participants. The conducted factor analyses demonstrated that the translated MHC-SF alig…

Structural connectivity of right frontal hyperactive areas scales with stuttering severity.

A neuronal sign of persistent developmental stuttering is the magnified coactivation of right frontal brain regions during speech production. Whether and how stuttering severity relates to the connection strength of these hyperactive right frontal areas to other brain areas is an open question. Scrutinizing such brain-behaviour and structure-function relationships aims at disentangling suspected underlying neuronal mechanisms of stuttering. Here, we acquired diffusion-weighted and functional images from 31 adults who stutter and 34 matched control participants. Using a newly developed structur…
