Gambling disorder has been listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) for more than three decades. During this time, its diagnostic set of criteria has gone through significant changes. In the DSM-5, gambling disorder has been moved from Disruptive, Impulse-Control and Conduct Disorders to Substance- Related and Addictive Disorders, which acknowledges and expresses that gambling disorder has similar features compared to substance related disorders. The aim of the present review is to reveal the reasons behind this category replacement, and to examine the similari

OBJECTIVE: To present lifetime rates of service use for psychological and substance use related problems among regular substance users and to examine factors associated with service use.
METHOD: Data come from a prospective-longitudinal, epidemiological study of a community sample of adolescents and young adults (n = 2548, age 14-24 years at baseline) in Munich, Germany. The Munich-Composite International Diagnostic Interview (M-CIDI) was used at baseline and at two follow-ups to assess substance use and service use.
RESULTS: Cumulated lifetime incidence of any substance abuse or dependence

Over the last several years, Japan has been facing its third epidemic of methamphetamine abuse. Methamphetamine and MDMA are categorized as Amphetamine Type Stimulants (ATS), and abuse of these substances has become a worldwide problem. A nationwide mental hospital survey on substance-related psychiatric disorders in Japan has been conducted since 1987 to clarify the current situation of Japan's substance abuse and dependence. Recent surveys show that methamphetamine and organic solvents are the most common substances of abuse in hospital settings. Fifty-five percent of all the patients includ

OBJECTIVES: Benzodiazepine adulteration of the unregulated opioid supply presents significant clinical challenges, whereby patients can develop physical dependence to benzodiazepines inadvertently. Currently, clinicians lack evidence to guide care of patients potentially experiencing benzodiazepine withdrawal when ceasing use of unregulated opioids. We used a Delphi technique to build consensus around assessment and management of people at risk for benzodiazepine dependence due to the use of unregulated opioids.
METHODS: We administered a Delphi Technique with 12 clinicians (physicians, nurse

BACKGROUND: Daily newspapers are the main platform by which substance misuse treatment (SMT) centers in Iran advertise their services. However, these advertisements provide little information on treatment options or costs. The current research aimed to use advertisements to compile a schema of treatment services and to map the extent and nature of drug treatments offered.
METHODS: During a four-week period (April to May) in 2009, the four most popular Persian newspapers printed in Tehran were reviewed. Across these publications 1704 advertisements were posted by 66 SMT centers. Each center wa

The pharmacological treatment of substance use disorders requires a complex, differentiated approach, in which acute withdrawal treatment, relapse prevention and the treatment of comorbid psychiatric symptoms are imple mented separately, but in close connection with each other. Alcohol, opioid, cannabis and nicotine use disorders, as well as problems associated with benzodiazepine use, show significant heterogeneity in terms of their clinical presentation, course, pharmacological treatment and outcome. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the pharmacological treatment of the most

The incidence of panic attacks methadone-maintained patients has increased over a 10-year period from 1 to 6-13%. Cocaine use appears to be associated with this increase, although other environmental and constitutional factors may be contributory. Patients with cocaine-associated panic differ from other panic patients in rates of psychiatric hospitalization and medical illness, but not in depression, other drug use, or agoraphobia.

Clinical and preclinical research have identified sex differences in substance use and addiction-related behaviors. Historically, substance use disorders are more prevalent in men than women, though this gap is closing. Despite this difference, women appear to be more susceptible to the effects of many drugs and progress to substance abuse treatment more quickly than men. While the glutamate system is a key regulator of addiction-related behaviors, much of the work implicating glutamate signaling and glutamatergic circuits has been conducted in men and male rodents. An increasing number of stu

The neurophysiology of sleep and the pathophysiology of substance use disorders (SUDs) involve overlaps in neurotransmitters and pathways. SUDs and substance withdrawal are accompanied by significant impairments in sleep. Conversely, sleep disturbances are known to predispose for SUDs. Sleep disorders (SDs) such as insomnia, short sleep duration, and excessive daytime sleepiness have been causally related to SUD initiation and maintenance. Management of SUDs integrally depends on the successful management of the associated SDs, and vice versa.

BACKGROUND: Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) have been associated with impaired neurocognitive functioning, which may (partly) improve with sustained abstinence. New treatments are emerging, aimed at improving cognitive functions, and being tested. However, no integrated review is available regarding neurocognitive recovery following sustained abstinence.
OBJECTIVES: In this review, results from prospective studies on neurocognitive recovery using neuropsychological assessments before and after sustained abstinence from SUDs are summarized and discussed.
RESULTS: Thirty-five prospective studie

Negative symptoms, conceptualized as clinical manifestations of schizophrenia, and subsequently described in other psychiatric disorders, include the loss of normal arousal, drive and affective reactivity. In the field of substance abuse, an interesting analogy can be detected between negative symptoms, in their classical meaning, and the amotivational syndrome (AS), which has been described as a form of chronic cannabis intoxication. AS also shows a close resemblance to the reward deficiency syndrome (RDS) of alcoholics and stimulant abusers, and to the post-withdrawal syndrome (PWS) of detox

Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the comorbidity between psychotic disorders and substance use, one of them being the capacity of some to induce psychotic symptoms, although the transition from psychotic episodes induced by substances to schizophrenia has been less studied. In this study, differential variables between patients with induced and non-induced psychosis are determined, and the evolution and change of diagnosis of those induced to schizophrenia in the follow-up is analyzed. This is an observational case-control study with 238 patients admitted to the acute care unit

Addictive use of the stimulant drug pemoline caused a delusional disorder in a middle-aged man. Discontinuance of use of the drug promptly reversed the psychosis, which subsequently recurred when pemoline was again used. Pemoline seems to be an addictive drug and has an additional property that heretofore has been attributed mainly to amphetamines--precipitation of a paranoid psychosis.
