Formation of Thioformic Acid (HCOSH)─The Simplest Thioacid─in Interstellar Ice Analogues.

Since the observation of the first sulfur-containing molecule, carbon monosulfide (CS), in the interstellar medium (ISM) half a century ago, sulfur-bearing species have attracted great attention from the astrochemistry, astrobiology, and planetary geology communities. Nevertheless, it is still not clear in which forms most of the sulfur resides in molecular clouds, an unsolved problem referred to as "sulfur depletion". Reported herein is the formation of thioformic acid (HCOSH)─the simplest thioacid─in interstellar ice analogues containing carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at 5 K

Evaluation and Development of Methodologies for the Synthesis of Thiophosphinic Acids.

Thiophosphorus acids R1R2P(S)OH constitute an important class of organophosphorus compounds, in which the phosphorus atom is intrinsically chiral if R1 ≠ R2. In connection with a project aimed at the preparation of chiral thiophosphorus acids, various available literature methods were considered, but few fit the requirement of odorless reagents. Herein, the results of our studies on the synthesis of thiophosphinic acids are reported. Ultimately, two major approaches were selected: (1) the Stec reaction of phosphorus amides with carbon disulfide; and (2) the one-pot synthesis of thiophosphorus

Ascorbic acid: a review of its chemistry and reactivity in relation to a wine environment.

Extensive reviews of research are available on the use of ascorbic acid, and its consequent degradation pathways, in physiological conditions or food matrices. However, very little information can be found for wine-related systems. This review highlights the relevant chemistry and reactivity of ascorbic acid with a focus on its behavior and potential behavior in a wine environment. The review describes the use of ascorbic acid as a complementary antioxidant preservative to sulfur dioxide along with the metal-catalyzed and radical-dependent manner by which it achieves this role. The relevant de

Photochemistry of Sulfur Dioxide Mediated by Charge Transfer through Intermolecular Chalcogen Bonds.

The photochemistry of sulfur dioxide (SO2) plays a crucial role in the Earth's atmosphere. In contrast to the well-established photochemistry of free SO2, the electronic properties and reactivity of SO2 complexes with other atmospherically relevant gas molecules are barely known. Herein, we demonstrate that the photochemistry of SO2 can be dramatically influenced by the first formation of charge-transfer (CT) prereaction complexes through intermolecular chalcogen bonds. Specifically, the prototype sulfur-sulfur bonded complex between SO2 and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) displays a strong CT absorpti

Emission characteristics of nitrogen- and sulfur-containing odorous compounds during different sewage sludge chemical conditioning processes.

Chemical conditioners are often used to enhance sewage sludge dewaterability through altering sludge properties and flocs structure, both affect odorous compounds emissions not only during sludge conditioning but also in subsequent sludge disposal. This study was to investigate emission characteristics of ammonia (NH(3)), sulfur dioxide (SO(2)), hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) and carbonyl sulfide (COS) generated from sewage sludge conditioned by three representative conditioners, i.e., organic polymers, iron salts and skeleton builders, F-S (Fenton's reagent and skeleton builders) composite conditio

Simultaneous activation/sulfurization method for production of sulfurized activated carbons: characterization and Hg(II) adsorption capacity.

As an inexpensive method for modification of activated carbons (ACs), sulfurization has attracted significant attention. However, the resulting sulfurized activated carbons (SACs) often are less porous than the original ACs. In this work, we propose a new method for concurrent sulfurization/activation that can lead to preparation of SACs with more porosity than the corresponding non-sulfurized ACs. By using scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, and iodine number experiments, the porous structure of the SACs has been compared with that of non-sulfurized ACs. The specific

Determination of sulfur trioxide in engine exhaust.

Sulfur trioxide in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine is removed and concentrated by absorption in a solution of 80% isopropyl alcohol, which quantitatively absorbs it and inhibits the oxidation of any sulfur dioxide which may be absorbed. The absorbed sulfur trioxide (sulfuric acid) is determined by an absorption titration by using barium chloride as the titrant and thorin as the indicator. The sulfur dioxide content of the exhaust is measured continuously by means of a DuPont Model 411 ultraviolet photoanalyzer.

Sulfur balance of sulfur dioxide-ethanol-water fractionation of sugarcane straw.

The sulfur balance of SO2-ethanol-water (AVAP®) fractionation of sugarcane (SC) straw was investigated. Hydrogen sulfite and sulfite anions are nearly absent in the liquors, despite cations present in straw, whose effect is thus limited to neutralization of lignosulfonic acids decreasing the acidity. Higher degree of sulfonation was observed for dissolved straw lignin compared to wood lignin (0.8-0.9 vs. 0.25 S/C9). Sulfur dioxide amounts of 0.9-1.2, 4.1-4.3 and 44-49g per o.d.kg straw were bound to pulp, precipitated lignin and lignosulfonic acid, respectively, while the rest of SO2 was recov

Sulfur dioxide: a novel gaseous signal in the regulation of cardiovascular functions.

The atmospheric pollutant sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) is endogenously generated from the normal metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids through the aspartate aminotransferase pathway. SO(2) is produced in cardiovascular tissues, and the aspartate aminotransferase mRNA is localized in endothelia and in vascular smooth muscle cells near the endothelial layer. Recent studies explored the physiological and pathophysiological effects of endogenous SO(2) on the cardiovascular system, and various potential mechanisms were found. These discoveries suggest a novel role of endogenous SO(2) in the modulat

A disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer's disease: focus on the trans-sulfuration pathway.

High homocysteine levels in Alzheimer's disease (AD) result from low activity of the trans-sulfuration pathway. Glutathione levels are also low in AD. L-cysteine is required for the synthesis of glutathione. The synthesis of coenzyme A (CoA) requires L-cysteine, which is synthesized via the trans-sulfuration pathway. CoA is required for the synthesis of acetylcholine and appropriate cholinergic neurotransmission. L-cysteine is required for the synthesis of molybdenum-containing proteins. Sulfite oxidase (SUOX), which is a molybdenum-containing protein, could be dysregulated in AD. SUOX detoxif

The role of nanosilica in antioxidant production, nutrition and photochemical efficiency to mitigate sulfur deficiency in Capsicum annuum L.

Sulfur deficiency limits the development of bell pepper in various cultivation regions worldwide. The use of nanosilica is a promising alternative to mitigate the nutritional impairments caused by stress; however, its efficacy in bell pepper under sulfur-deficiency and its potential benefits for non-stressed plants remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of sulfur-deficiency on bell pepper and evaluate the effects of nanosilica in mitigating these effects, as well as to explore its benefits under sulfur-sufficient conditions. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse usin

Involvement of thermophilic archaea in the biocorrosion of oil pipelines.

Two thermophilic archaea, strain PK and strain MG, were isolated from a culture enriched at 80°C from the inner surface material of a hot oil pipeline. Strain PK could ferment complex organic nitrogen sources (e.g. yeast extract, peptone, tryptone) and was able to reduce elemental sulfur (S°), Fe(3+) and Mn(4+) . Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the organism belonged to the order Thermococcales. Incubations of this strain with elemental iron (Fe°) resulted in the abiotic formation of ferrous iron and the accumulation of volatile fatty acids during yeast extract fermentation. The other isola

A novel method for Fe-Al2O3 composites prepared from high sulfur Bayan Obo iron concentrate: Effectively eliminate the emission of SO2.

Fe-Al2O3 composites with different carbon contents were prepared by reactive sintering from high sulfur iron concentrate, bauxite, Al2O3 powder mixture. The effects of different carbon contents on emission form of sulfur were studied. The thermo gravimetric-infrared radiation results showed there were no gaseous compounds containing sulfur discharged during the sintering except CO2 and H2O. It is indicated that sulfur precipitates around the metal phase in the form of sulfide by the phases and microstructures analysis. And with an increase in carbon contents, sulfide gradually transformed from

Elucidation of Characteristic Sulfur-Fumigated Markers and Chemical Transformation Mechanism for Quality Control of Achyranthes bidentate Blume Using Metabolome and Sulfur Dioxide Residue Analysis.

Achyranthes bidentata Blume (AB) is a health food and a sulfur-free herbal medicine that is one of the most heavily sulfur-fumigated herbs in the marketplace. In this work, a comprehensive approach using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight-MS (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) and multivariate statistical analysis was developed to identify characteristic sulfur-fumigation markers, elucidate chemical transformation mechanisms and characterize the degree of sulfur-fumigation of AB. Non-fumigated and sulfur-fumigated AB samples were compared by UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS analysis. T

Microbial pathways in colonic sulfur metabolism and links with health and disease.

Sulfur is both crucial to life and a potential threat to health. While colonic sulfur metabolism mediated by eukaryotic cells is relatively well studied, much less is known about sulfur metabolism within gastrointestinal microbes. Sulfated compounds in the colon are either of inorganic (e.g., sulfates, sulfites) or organic (e.g., dietary amino acids and host mucins) origin. The most extensively studied of the microbes involved in colonic sulfur metabolism are the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), which are common colonic inhabitants. Many other microbial pathways are likely to shape colonic sul

Effects of acidic deposition on forest and aquatic ecosystems in New York State.

Acidic deposition is comprised of sulfuric and nitric acids and ammonium derived from atmospheric emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and ammonia, respectively. Acidic deposition has altered soil through depletion of labile pools of nutrient cations (i.e. calcium, magnesium), accumulation of sulfur and nitrogen, and the mobilization of elevated concentrations of inorganic monomeric aluminum to soil solutions in acid-sensitive areas. Acidic deposition leaches essential calcium from needles of red spruce, making this species more susceptible to freezing injury. Mortality among sugar ma

Respiratory response of guinea pigs to ozone alone and with sulfur dioxide.

This study was designed to utilize our guinea pig bioassay method for irritant response to address the question of whether or not ozone and sulfur dioxide appeared to react to form sulfuric acid in the respiratory tract. Animals were exposed to 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 ppm of each gas alone and to the combination at concentrations of 0.4 and 0.8 ppm. In these experiments sulfur dioxide alone produced no statistically significant alterations in respiration. All concentrations of ozone produced an increase in respiratory frequency. At the two higher concentrations the increase in frequency was accompan

Recovery of nickel, cobalt and some salts from spent Ni-MH batteries.

This work provides a method to help recover nickel, cobalt metals and some of their salts having market value from spent nickel-metal hydride batteries (SNiB). The methodology used benefits the solubility of the battery electrode materials in sulfuric or hydrochloric acids. The results obtained showed that sulfuric acid was slightly less powerful in leaching SNiB compared to HCl acid. Despite that, sulfuric acid was extremely applied on economic basis. The highest level of solubility attained 93.5% using 3N sulfuric acid at 90 degrees C for 3h. The addition of hydrogen peroxide to the reacting

Marine Sulfur Oxidation Amplifies Gaseous Organosulfate Formation in a Coastal Urban Atmosphere.

While sea breezes are commonly considered a natural cleansing process for coastal cities, their contribution to marine sulfur chemistry and subsequent organic aerosol formation remains poorly constrained. Using nitrate chemical ionization atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight mass spectrometry in Xiamen, China, we tentatively assigned 16 gaseous organic sulfur species consistent with organosulfates (OSs) from biogenic and anthropogenic precursor classes. The species showed distinct diurnal patterns, indicating compound-dependent photochemical production and gas-particle exchange. Marin

Sulfur Metabolism Under Stress.

Significance: In humans, imbalances in the reduction-oxidation (redox) status of cells are associated with many pathological states. In addition, many therapeutics and prophylactics used as interventions for diverse pathologies either directly modulate oxidant levels or otherwise influence endogenous cellular redox systems. Recent Advances: The cellular machineries that maintain redox homeostasis or that function within antioxidant defense systems rely heavily on the regulated reactivities of sulfur atoms either within or derived from the amino acids cysteine and methionine.
