A total artificial heart was implanted in 28 patients as a bridge to transplantation. Mean time of mechanical support was 14.8 +/- 10 days. The 70-mL Jarvik-7 was used in 12 patients and the 100-mL Jarvik-7 in the remaining 16. No clinical thromboembolic complications occurred during implantation. Long term follow-up of 378 children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) treated at a single centre showed that at six years from diagnosis 202 (53%) were alive, of whom 140 (37%) remained in first remission. A case is reported of a boy who at the age of 14 years developed subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. He deteriorated over a period of 9 months, improved greatly and remained stable for 7 years before relapse. The final deterioration to death extended over 6 years. During the whole period he was examined regularly and the electroencephalogram recorded at 3 to 6 monthly intervals. The brain was examined histologically after death. Electroencephalographic and pathological features are described.

Recurrence of adrenal cortical carcinoma 22 years after first presentation is reported in a 54-year-old woman with Cushing's syndrome. This tumour is normally associated with poor prognosis and prolonged survival is rare. Although the patient had remained well with apparent 'cure' in the intervening years, it is suggested that hormonal changes related to the menopause and the development of primary hypoadrenalism stimulated recurrence of malignant activity and return of Cushingoid features.

Studies were carried out on eight patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. Four patients were found to have a haemolytic anaemia; one had Coombs red cell antibodies. Two patients had evidence of splenic sequestration of red cells using the radio-chromium technique.
