Brainstem circuits encoding start, speed, and duration of swimming in adult zebrafish.

The flexibility of locomotor movements requires an accurate control of their start, duration, and speed. How brainstem circuits encode and convey these locomotor parameters remains unclear. Here, we have combined in vivo calcium imaging, electrophysiology, anatomy, and behavior in adult zebrafish to address these questions. We reveal that the detailed parameters of locomotor movements are encoded by two molecularly, topographically, and functionally segregated glutamatergic neuron subpopulations within the nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus. The start, duration, and changes of locom

Deep Brain Stimulation and Swimming Performance: A Randomized Within-Person Crossover Study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether deep brain stimulation (DBS) causes swimming impairment, we systematically compared swimming ability between DBS on vs off in 18 patients. METHODS: We conducted a randomized blinded crossover study, comparing swimming ability between DBS on vs off, within participants. Participants swam 3 laps of front crawl and 3 laps of breaststroke. Prespecifed primary outcomes were proportion of lap completed, lap time, and Aquatic Skills Proficiency Assessment (ASPA) score. Prespecified secondary outcomes were a qualitative description of marked changes observed. RESULTS:

Microarchitecture of cetacean vertebral trabecular bone among swimming modes and diving behaviors.

Cetaceans (dolphins, whales, and porpoises) are fully aquatic mammals that are supported by water's buoyancy and swim through axial body bending. Swimming is partially mediated by variations in vertebral morphology that creates trade-offs in body flexibility and rigidity between axial regions that either enhance or reduce displacement between adjacent vertebrae. Swimming behavior is linked to foraging ecology, where deep-diving cetaceans glide a greater proportion of the time compared to their shallow-diving counterparts. In this study, we categorized 10 species of cetaceans (Families Delphini

Assessments of sperm quality integrating morphology, swimming patterns, bioenergetics and cell signalling.

Spermatozoa are diverse in form and function and these differences impact on their fertilizing capacity. Because of considerable inter-male and inter-species differences in sperm traits, assessments of sperm quality demand that we consider variations at different levels. We should thus pay attention not only to average values but also intra- and inter-sperm population variations and subpopulation structure. Sperm shape and size evolve in reponse to postcopulatory sexual selection. Assessments of morphological variation, with conventional microscopy or with computer-assisted systems, should bea

Supporting front crawl swimming in paraplegics using electrical stimulation: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Participation in physical and therapeutic activities is usually severely restricted after a spinal cord injury (SCI). Reasons for this are the associated loss of voluntary motor function, inefficient temperature regulation of the affected extremities, and early muscle fatigue. Hydrotherapy or swim training offer an inherent weight relief, reduce spasticity and improve coordination, muscle strength and fitness. METHODS: We present a new hybrid exercise modality that combines functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the knee extensors and transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tS

Gene expression changes in blood RNA after swimming in a chlorinated pool.

Exposure to disinfection by-products (DBP) such as trihalomethanes (THM) in swimming pools has been linked to adverse health effects in humans, but their biological mechanisms are unclear. We evaluated short-term changes in blood gene expression of adult recreational swimmers after swimming in a chlorinated pool. Volunteers swam 40min in an indoor chlorinated pool. Blood samples were drawn and four THM (chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane and bromoform) were measured in exhaled breath before and after swimming. Intensity of physical activity was measured as metabolic equival

Environmental estrogen(s) induced swimming behavioural alterations in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The present study is an attempt to investigate the effects of long-term (75days) exposure to environmental estrogens (EE) on the swimming behaviour of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Adult zebrafish were exposed semi-statically to media containing commonly detected estrogenic water contaminants (EE2, DES and BPA) at a concentration (5ng/L) much lower than environmentally recorded levels. Time spent in swimming, surface preference, patterns and path of swimming were recorded (6mins) for each fish using two video cameras on day 15, 30 60 and 75. Video clips were analysed using a software program. Resul

Interleukin-10 limits intense acute swimming-induced muscle mechanical hyperalgesia in mice.

What is the central question of this study? This study investigated the role of the endogenous anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 in intense acute swimming-induced muscle mechanical hyperalgesia in mice. What is the main finding and its importance? Endogenous interleukin-10 has a key role in limiting exercise-induced muscle pain in a model presenting similarities to delayed-onset muscle soreness in mice. Interleukin-10 reduced muscle pain by diminishing leucocyte recruitment, hyperalgesic cytokine production, oxidative stress and myocyte damage. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an antihyperalg

Swimming improves the emotional memory deficit by scopolamine via mu opioid receptors.

AIMS: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of swimming exercise on elevated plus-maze (EPM)-associated memory deficit induced by intra-CA1 injection of scopolamine (a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist used to model Alzheimer's disease in rodents) in male mice. In addition, involvement of the mu opioid receptors in this phenomenon was investigated. MAIN METHODS: Bilateral guide cannulae were implanted to allow intra-CA1 microinjections. KEY FINDINGS: Data showed that mice with 10 and 20 days of swimming, only acquired the emotional memory, while 30 days of swi

Evidence of antibiotic resistance in free-swimming, top-level marine predatory fishes.

Antibiotic resistance in bacteria is a growing problem in both human and veterinary medicine. Several studies documented the presence of resistant bacteria in humans, livestock, and domestic animals; however, limited research is available on the presence of antibiotic drug resistance in wildlife species. A cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of resistant bacteria collected from wild-caught, marine predatory fishes. Seven species of sharks and a single teleost species were opportunistically sampled from six different study sites in coastal Belize, coastal and nearshor

Swimming training exacerbates pathological cardiac hypertrophy in kinin B2 receptor-deficient mice.

Kallikrein-kinin system exerts cardioprotective effects against pathological hypertrophy. These effects are modulated mainly via B2 receptor activation. Chronic physical exercise can induce physiological cardiac hypertrophy characterized by normal organization of cardiac structure. Therefore, the aim of this work was to verify the influence of kinin B2 receptor deletion on physiological hypertrophy to exercise stimulus. Animals were submitted to swimming practice for 5 min or for 60 min, 5 days a week, during 1 month and several cardiac parameters were evaluated. Results showed no significantl

Shoulder impingement in front-crawl swimming: I. A method to identify impingement.

PURPOSE: The impingement of subacromial structures has been proposed as a major cause of the shoulder problems experienced by athletes who use repetitive overhead actions. The purpose of this study was to develop a noninvasive method to identify instances at which the shoulder was experiencing impingement during front-crawl swimming. METHODS: Shoulder impingement has been reported to occur when an arm is: (a) elevated above shoulder height while being rotated internally; and (b) forcibly elevated at, or beyond, the maximum active elevation angle. In this study shoulder configurations that sat

Swimming pool immersion accidents: an analysis from the Brisbane Drowning Study. 1977.

An analysis of a consecutive series of 66 swimming pool immersion accidents is presented; 74% of these occurred in in-ground swimming pools. The estimated accident rate per pool is fives times greater for in-ground pools compared with above-ground pools, where pools are inadequately fenced. Backyard swimming pools account for 74% of pool accidents. Motel and caravan park pools account for 9% of childhood immersion accidents, but the survival rate (17%) is very low. Fifty per cent of pool accidents occur in the family's own backyard pool, and 13.6% in a neighbour's pool; in the latter the survi

Reduction of steps in the preparation of motile sperm for intrauterine insemination does not reduce efficacy of the procedure: simplified one-step swim-up method versus classic swim-up.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a valid treatment for infertility with a cumulative pregnancy rate of >40-90% after 3-10 treatment cycles. We studied the efficacy of a simplified method for motile sperm preparation for IUI. METHODS: A prospective clinical trial was performed with 100 couples (male age 33-48 and female 28-37 years) with a 2-8 year history of primary infertility associated with slight oligozoospermia (16/100), oligomenorrhoea (32/100) or unknown (52/100). Motile sperm for IUI were prepared by: (A) the classic World Health Organization self-migration (swim-up) met

Swimming with robots: investigating fish locomotion, sensing, and schooling behavior with robotic swimmers.

Fish display remarkable locomotor and social abilities, from efficient swimming to coordinated schooling, that have inspired the design of various robotic fish. While robotics has largely benefited from biology, fish-like robots are increasingly used as scientific tools to investigate fundamental questions in biomechanics, sensorimotor control, and collective behavior. This paper reviews how robotic models have been employed to study the neuromechanical basis of swimming, the role of sensory feedback in locomotion, and the mechanisms underlying social interactions in schools. We list open ques

Investigation into the Mechanical Properties of Swimming-Goggle Gaskets After Prolonged Water Conditioning.

This study combines experimental conditioning and numerical simulations to evaluate water-induced degradation of swimming-goggle gaskets and their mechanical response under representative loading conditions. Two gasket geometries were modeled, with the flatter profile serving as a reference and the more anatomically representative variant analyzed using finite-element analysis for neoprene, silicone, and SEBS materials of different Shore A hardness under prescribed periorbital pressure distributions. Commercial gaskets were conditioned by static immersion in chlorinated, distilled, and saline

Identification of SSR Markers Correlated with Growth Traits in Swimming Crab (Portunus trituberculatus).

The swimming crab, Portunus trituberculatus, holds significant economic value in aquaculture, and marker-assisted selection (MAS) offers a powerful strategy to accelerate genetic improvement of growth-related traits. In this study, we performed an association analysis between 40 SSR markers and growth traits in 244 P. trituberculatus individuals. High genetic diversity was observed, with mean Shannon's diversity index (SI) = 1.970, expected heterozygosity (He) = 0.773, and polymorphism information content (PIC) = 0.747. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis revealed that all 485 marker pairs we
