Effects of renal denervation on cardiac oxidative stress and local activity of the sympathetic nervous system and renin-angiotensin system in acute myocardial infracted dogs.

BACKGROUND: This study sought to evaluate the therapeutic effects of renal denervation (RDN) on acute myocardial infarction (MI) in canines … ee radical (ASAFR) and activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD). To measure the local activity of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and renin-angiotensin system (RAS), the levels of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), angiotensin II (AngII), angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), angiotensin (1-7) [Ang(1-7)] and Mas receptor (MasR) in myocardial tissues were recorded. The expressi …

Differences in sympathetic nervous system activity and NMDA receptor levels within the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus in rats with differential ejaculatory behavior.

Heterotetrameric adaptor protein (AP) complexes play key roles in protein sorting and transport vesicle formation in the endomembrane system of eukaryotic cells. One of these complexes, AP-4, was identified over 20 years ago but, up until recently, its function remained unclear. AP-4 associates with the trans-Golgi network (TGN) through interaction with small GTPases of the ARF family and recognizes transmembrane proteins (i.e. cargos) having specific sorting signals in their cytosolic domains. Recent studies identified accessory proteins (tepsin, RUSC2 and the FHF complex) that co-operate wit

Sympathetic nervous system dysfunction in fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, and interstitial cystitis: a review of case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia often coexists and overlaps with other syndromes such as chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, and interstitial cystitis. Chronic stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of these illnesses. The sympathetic nervous system is a key element of the stress response system. Sympathetic dysfunction has been reported in these syndromes, raising the possibility that such dysautonomia could be their common clustering underlying pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to carry out a review of all published comparative case-control studies investigati…

Nitrogen and sodium balance and sympathetic-nervous-system activity in obese subjects treated with a low-calorie protein or mixed diet.

Seven obese subjects were placed on a 400-kcal protein diet and on an isocaloric mixed diet (50 per cent protein and 50 per cent carbohydrate), three to 5 1/2 weeks for each diet. Despite twofold to fivefold increases in ketone levels in the blood and urine with the protein diet, net nitrogen balance was no different from that with the mixed diet (-2.1 +/- 0.9 vs. -2.6 +/- 0.4 g per day; mean +/- S.E.M.). However, net sodium loss with the protein diet (-382 +/- 117 mmol) was significantly greater than with the mixed diet (-25 +/- 105 mmol; P less than 0.02). Furthermore, maximal orthostatic de

Anti-hypertensive effect of acebutolol: its relation to sympathetic nervous system responsiveness and to plasma renin and dopamine-beta-hydroxylase activities.

1. Acebutolol, a beta1-receptor blocker, has, at a daily dose of 800 mg, a mild but significant anti-hypertensive effect in moderate sustained essential hypertension with normal or low plasma renin activity. 2. Prediction of its anti-hypertensive effect is better based on the evaluation of the sympathetic nervous system responsiveness to head-up tilt than on the evaluation of plasma renin activity or dopamine-beta-hydroxylase. 3. The anti-hypertensive effect of acebutolol is better explained on the basis of inhibition of the sympathetic nervous system activity than on the basis of suppression …

Enteric and Sympathetic Nervous System Pathways Mediate Early Life Stress Effects on Gut Motility and Pain: Mechanistic Findings With Human Correlation.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Adverse experiences during early life can disrupt gut-brain axis development, but the mechanisms linking early life stress (ELS) to long-term gastrointestinal dysmotility and pain remain unclear. METHODS: We used a maternal separation (MS) mouse model of ELS and assessed visceral pain sensitivity, intestinal motility, and enteric nervous system (ENS) composition. Two large human pediatric population cohorts were also analyzed for associations between ELS and disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) risk. RESULTS: MS in mice led to visceral hypersensitivity, sex-specific m

A Systematic Review of Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) Inhibitors and Sympathetic Nervous System Inhibition: An Underrated Mechanism of Cardiorenal Protection.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have many actions beyond glycemic control. The drug leads to favorable cardiovascular and renal outcomes. In this review, we focused on how SGLT2 inhibitors produce these outcomes and what role it plays in the inhibition of the sympathetic nervous system in diabetic patients. We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, and Biomed Central databases from January 2016 to February 2022. The authors used specific keywords and the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) strategy. We identified a total of 3,961 records. Strict inclusion-exclusion criteria were followe…

Importance of sympathetic nervous system activity during left ventricular functional recovery and its association with in-hospital complications in Takotsubo syndrome.

The relationship between activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and improvement of left ventricular (LV) function and how this correlates with clinical outcomes are not fully explored in Takotsubo syndrome (TS). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between activation of the SNS and LV function improvement and how this correlates with clinical outcomes in TS. Patients with TS were retrospectively identified. Patients were divided into two groups according to the timing of LV function improvement: < 1 month (S group) and ≥ 1 month (L group). Activation of the SNS…

Evidence That the Sympathetic Nervous System Elicits Rapid, Coordinated, and Reciprocal Adjustments of Insulin Secretion and Insulin Sensitivity During Cold Exposure.

Dynamic adjustment of insulin secretion to compensate for changes of insulin sensitivity that result from alteration of nutritional or metabolic status is a fundamental aspect of glucose homeostasis. To investigate the role of the brain in this coupling process, we used cold exposure as an experimental paradigm because the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) helps to coordinate the major shifts of tissue glucose utilization needed to ensure that increased thermogenic needs are met. We found that glucose-induced insulin secretion declined by 50% in rats housed at 5°C for 28 h, and yet, glucose tol…

Long-acting dihydropyridine calcium-channel blockers and sympathetic nervous system activity in hypertension: a literature review comparing amlodipine and nifedipine GITS.

Calcium-channel blockers (CCBs) constitute a diverse group of compounds but are often referred to as a single homogeneous class of drug and the clinical responses indiscriminately summarized. Even within the dihydropyridine subgroup, there are significant differences in formulations, pharmacokinetics, durations of action and their effects on blood pressure, heart rate, end organs and the sympathetic nervous system. Amlodipine and nifedipine in the gastrointestinal therapeutic system (GITS) formulation are the most studied of the once-daily CCBs. Amlodipine has an inherently long pharmacokineti…

Testing the sympathetic nervous system of the foot has a high predictive value for early amputation in patients with diabetes with a neuroischemic ulcer.

OBJECTIVE: There is evidence from the literature that dysfunctionality of the sympathetic nervous system of the foot with subsequent loss of local autoregulation could be a predictor of early amputation in patients with diabetes with a neuroischemic ulcer. To confirm this we tested the functionality of the sympathetic nervous system in the foot in a consecutive group of 31 patients with diabetes with critical limb ischemia and non-healing neuroischemic ulcer. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Prospective cohort with retrospective analysis after 12 months of routinely acquired clinical data. All pa…

A study of the de- and regenerative changes in the sympathetic nervous system of the adult mouse after treatment with the antiserum to nerve growth factor.

In the adult mouse, the antiserum to nerve growth factor (NGF) induced marked atrophic changes of the ganglionic cell bodies in the superior … nces between NGF-antiserum and 6-hydroxydopamine with respect to their mode of action on the mature sympathetic nervous system. Finally, we suggest that a decreased availability of NGF in a terminal area, due to an interference with endogenous NGF by NGF-antibodies, may temporarily result in an impaired function of the supplying adrenergic neurone, including a degeneration …

The role of the sympathetic component of the autonomic nervous system on pain before and after third molar extraction- an observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Assessing heart rate variability (HRV) before a standardized surgery would help to explore further the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and pain. METHODS: A single-center prospective cohort of 117 patients (55% female) scheduled for third molar extraction underwent a preoperative resting measurement of arterial pressure followed by an HRV recording, then potentiated by a Valsalva maneuver and a deep breathing challenge. Finally, pain sensitivity was assessed by hand immersion in hot water. All surgeries were conducted under local anesthesia, with or without sedati

The Potential Application of Heavy Ion Beams in the Treatment of Arrhythmia: The Role of Radiation-Induced Modulation of Connexin43 and the Sympathetic Nervous System.

It has been known that heart disease-such as myocardial infarction (MI), cardiac hypertrophy, or heart failure-alters the molecular structure and function of the gap junction, which can lead to an abnormal heart rhythm. Radiation has been shown to modulate intercellular communication in the skin and lungs by increasing connexin43 (Cx43) expression. Understanding how Cx43 upregulation is induced in a diseased heart can help provide a new perspective to radiation therapy for arrhythmias. In a recent study with rabbits after MI, carbon ions were accelerated to 290 MeV/u and extracted in the air;

Pathology of the sympathetic nervous system corresponding to the decreased cardiac uptake in 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy in a patient with Parkinson disease.

Decreased cardiac uptake in (123)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy has been adopted as one of the most reliable diagnostic tests for Parkinson disease (PD) in Japan. To investigate the morphological basis for this finding, we performed a detailed neuropathological study of the cardiac sympathetic nervous system of a 71-year-old autopsy-proven PD patient, who presented with a marked decrease in cardiac uptake of MIBG, just 1 year prior to death. We carefully examined the intermediolateral column at several levels of the thoracic spinal cord, the sympathetic trunk and ganglia, and th…

[The effect of the drug-induced activation and deprivation of the sympathetic nervous system on aldosterone receptor binding by the kidney with disturbed neurotrophic support].

The results of studies are presented on the determination of aldosterone accumulation by mineralocorticoid receptors on cytoplasm and nuclei of normal rat renal tubules as well as in disturbed neurotrophic supply of the kidney including that against the background of activation and deprivation of the sympathetic nervous system function. It was shown that a pharmacological stimulation of sympathetic nervous system potentiated functional disturbances of the renal mineralocorticoid receptor apparatus in reflex dystrophy of the kidney. A simultaneous pharmacological blockade both of neural and of …

Investigating the effect of diet-induced prediabetes on the HPA-axis, sympathetic nervous system and endogenous opioids in male Sprague-Dawley rats.

BACKGROUND: Prediabetes is associated with metabolic dysfunction that may disrupt neuroendocrine regulation before the onset of overt type 2 diabetes mellitus. Although previous studies have independently examined alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, sympathetic nervous system (SNS), and endogenous opioid system during prediabetes, the temporal interactions among these systems during disease progression remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate changes in these interconnected neuroendocrine pathways in a diet-induced prediabetic rats. METHODS: Male Spr…
