Predicting negative symptoms: a novel scale for assessing anticipatory cognitive mechanisms in psychosis.

INTRODCUTION: Negative symptoms are a central feature of the schizophrenia spectrum and also appear subclinically in healthy individuals, being associated with poor functional outcomes. Although clinician-rated measures remain the gold standard, self-report tools offer efficiency and a direct insight into subjective experiences. OBJECTIVE: This study presents the development and validation of the Negative Symptoms Anticipation Scale (NSAS), a novel self-report instrument designed to assess anticipatory cognitions related to negative symptoms. METHOD: In a pilot study, an initial 28-item vers

Longitudinal Assessment of Parkinson's Motor Symptoms and Dopaminergic Dysfunction Patterns Using DaTSCAN.

INTRODUCTION: Determining Parkinson's disease (PD) stage and severity are among the factors affecting treatment strategy. Dopamine transporter scan (DaTSCAN) has high efficiency in the diagnosis of PD, while its role in predicting motor function, dyskinesia, and symptoms severity trajectory remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between motor symptoms patterns in PD with DaTscan findings. METHODS: A total of 196 patients were included and grouped based on tremor score, postural instability and gait difficulty score, and the presentation of dyskinesia. Multivariat

Assessing the diagnostic accuracy of symptoms and signs of degenerative cervical myelopathy: A prospective study.

Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is a clinical diagnosis based on history, physical exam, and imaging, but standardized criteria have not been established, contributing to diagnostic delays. We conducted a prospective study of DCM and healthy subjects that comprehensively evaluated symptoms, patient-reported and clinician-administered outcome measures, and physical assessments of motor and sensory function.Diagnostic utility was evaluated using Youden's Index (YI=sensitivity+specificity-1). 139 DCM patients and 108 age-matched healthy subjects were compared. Distinguishing symptoms inclu

Assessing the Stability of Clusters of Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Alzheimer's Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment.

AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate the factors that underpin neuropsychiatric symptoms and how they might evolve over time in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are psychiatric and behavioural manifestations that occur in people with AD. These are highly prevalent along the continuum of the disease, including at the stage of MCI, as well as before cognitive decline. Various small- and large-scale projects have investigated the underlying factors that underpin these symptoms; however, the identifica

Assessment and report of individual symptoms in studies of delirium in postoperative populations: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Delirium is most often reported as present or absent. Patients with symptoms falling short of the diagnostic criteria for delirium fall into 'no delirium' or 'control' groups. This binary classification neglects individual symptoms and may be hindering identification of the pathophysiology underlying delirium. This systematic review investigates which individual symptoms of delirium are reported by studies of postoperative delirium in adults. METHODS: Medline, EMBASE and Web of Science databases were searched on 03 June 2021 and 06 April 2023. Two reviewers independently examined

Assessing Changes in Nonspecific Symptoms After Parathyroidectomy for Primary Hyperparathyroidism Using a Smartwatch.

OBJECTIVE: Parathyroidectomy (PTX) is indicated in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) with osteoporosis or nephrolithiasis. There is not a uniform consensus on the benefit of PTX for nonspecific symptoms, but patient-reported questionnaires have demonstrated improved quality of life (QOL) afterward. This study aimed to evaluate physical activity and sleep after PTX using smartwatch technology. METHODS: A prospective study of consecutive patients undergoing PTX for PHPT from August 2022 to July 2023 was conducted. Each patient received a smartwatch to continuously track physical activity and s

Practical multidisciplinary framework for the assessment and management of patients with unexplained chronic aerodigestive symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Patients experiencing unexplained chronic throat symptoms (UCTS) are frequently referred to gastroenterology and otolaryngology outpatient departments for investigation. Often despite extensive investigations, an identifiable structural abnormality to account for the symptoms is not found. The objective of this article is to provide a concise appraisal of the evidence-base for current approaches to the assessment and management of UCTS, their clinical outcomes, and related healthcare utilisation. DESIGN: This multidisciplinary review critically examines the current understanding of

Usefulness of Self-Assessment of Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Web-Based Study in Anhui, China.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal symptoms (GISs) are caused by a combination of biopsychosocial factors and are highly prevalent worldwide. Given their complex nature, coupled with ineffective communication of diagnoses by physicians, patients with intimate GISs often feel stigmatized. This, in turn, can inhibit their ability to express their thoughts and feelings adequately, leading them to over- or underreport their symptoms. Moreover, selective service-seeking for and reporting of GISs have a direct bearing on the stage of disease at presentation and, consequently, on the overall prognosis. OB

Developing and validating a questionnaire to assess the symptoms of blepharitis accompanied by dry eye disease.

PURPOSE: To propose additional items for established dry eye disease (DED) instruments that cover blepharitis-specific signs and symptoms and to determine the association between the clinical findings and subjective complaints. METHODS: Thirty-one patients with blepharitis and DED were prospectively included in the pretest period for selecting suitable questions. In the main phase of the study, the selected questions were then tested on 68 patients with blepharitis and DED and 20 controls without blepharitis or DED. Pearson's coefficient of correlation was calculated between the blepharitis-s

Gastrointestinal symptoms and nutritional issues in patients with hypermobility disorders: assessment, diagnosis and management.

Patients diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and hypermobile spectrum disorders are increasingly presenting to secondary and tertiary care centres with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and nutritional issues. Due to the absence of specific guidance, these patients are investigated, diagnosed and managed heterogeneously, resulting in a growing concern that they are at increased risk of iatrogenic harm. This review aims to collate the evidence for the causes of GI symptoms, nutritional issues and associated conditions as well as the burden of polypharmacy in this group of patients. W

Understanding the basic assessment and treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms in older women.

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are prevalent in older women. These symptoms are often under-reported due to the potentially embarrassing nature of the symptoms and a belief that they are an inevitable consequence of ageing. LUTS such as urinary incontinence have a significant negative effect on people's quality of life; however, with the appropriate assessment and management, improvements can be achieved. This article reviews the different types of LUTS and their causes, assessment and treatment, focusing on older women. It aims to provide nurses with an understanding of LUTS so that they

Efficacy assessment of acupuncture in improving symptoms of uterine fibroids: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Uterine fibroids are a common benign genital tumor disease in gynecological diseases. It is mainly a change in physical function caused by the growth of smooth muscle cells in the factor uterus. Modern medicine's treatment of this disease is based on the dependence of uterine fibroids on sex hormones. Treatment with antiprogestin and estrogen drugs can reduce the volume of fibroids or slow the rate of increase in volume, thereby achieving the goal of alleviating clinical symptoms. In order to meet the needs of the majority of women of childbearing age and to maintain fertility, a
