The impact of age in rule-based and information-integration category learning tasks.

The ability to acquire new skills is essential throughout the lifespan and allows older adults to maintain independence and quality of life. Age-related declines in learning may stem from impairments in declarative systems supporting rule-based (RB) reasoning, procedural systems supporting associative learning, or their interaction. Prior work has yielded mixed findings regarding which of these specific processes (simple rules, complex rules, or procedural acquisition) is disproportionately affected by aging. Category learning provides a useful paradigm to disentangle these possibilities, as i

Management of non-vestibular schwannomas in adult patients: a systematic review and consensus statement on behalf of the EANS skull base section Part III: Lower cranial nerve schwannomas, jugular foramen (CN IX, X, XI) and hypoglossal schwannoma (XII).

BACKGROUND: Non-vestibular schwannomas are relatively rare, with trigeminal and jugular foramen schwannomas being the most common. This is a heterogenous group which requires detailed investigation and careful consideration to management strategy. The optimal management for these tumours remains unclear, and there are several controversies. The aim of this paper is to provide insight into the main principles defining management and surgical strategy, in order to formulate a series of recommendations. METHODS: A task force was created by the EANS skull base section committee along with its mem

[Visual search in Alzheimer disease--an functional magnetic resonance imaging study].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the functional activation patterns during two types of visual search tasks in Alzheimer's disease (AD) with functional MRI, and probe the neuro-anatomic basis of visual attention. METHODS: 13 patients with AD and 13 sex and age-matched healthy subjects participated in the experiment designed with two visual search tasks. The first was a "pop-out" single feature task, detecting a vertical target among horizontal distractors, and the second was a conjunction task where the target was defined by conjunction of feature (color and orientation) and the performance depended

Δ(9)Tetrahydrocannabinol impairs reversal learning but not extra-dimensional shifts in rhesus macaques.

Expansion of medical marijuana use in the US and the recently successful decriminalization of recreational marijuana in two States elevates interest in the specific cognitive effects of Δ(9)tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ(9)THC), the major psychoactive constituent of marijuana. Controlled laboratory studies in nonhuman primates provide mixed evidence for specific effects of Δ(9)THC in learning and memory tasks, with a suggestion that frontal-mediated tasks may be the most sensitive. In this study, adult male rhesus monkeys were trained on tasks which assess reversal learning, extradimensional attentio

Selective Impairments in Covert Shifts of Attention in Chinese Dyslexic Children.

Reading depends heavily on the efficient shift of attention. Mounting evidence has suggested that dyslexics have deficits in covert attentional shift. However, it remains unclear whether dyslexics also have deficits in overt attentional shift. With the majority of relevant studies carried out in alphabetic writing systems, it is also unknown whether the attentional deficits observed in dyslexics are restricted to a particular writing system. The present study examined inhibition of return (IOR)-a major driving force of attentional shifts-in dyslexic children learning to read a logographic scri

Cognitive sequences in obsessive-compulsive disorder are supported by frontal cortex ramping activity.

Completing sequences is a routine part of daily life. Many are abstract, defined by a rule governing the order rather than the identity of individual steps (e.g., getting dressed). In obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), excessive ritualistic behaviors suggest a disruption in abstract sequence completion. Executing abstract sequences requires at least two levels in a hierarchy of cognitive control: abstract sequential control (tracking steps) and task switching (shifting between tasks). While task switching has been studied in OCD, little is known in a sequential context. Understanding both hi

Visually guided voluntary actions boost short-term ocular dominance plasticity.

Short-term monocular deprivation transiently shifts ocular dominance in favor of the deprived eye. Here we asked whether the effect of a one-hour monocular deprivation was enhanced by the execution of a task requiring visually guided goal-directed actions, compared to a passive viewing condition where participants watched a replay of their own actions. Although the visual input was the same across conditions, we found a stronger ocular dominance shift when participants actively performed the task. These results provide strong evidence that voluntary, goal-directed actions modulate visual plast

A Wearable Brain-Computer Interface for Mitigating Car Sickness via Attention Shifting.

Car sickness, an enormous vehicular travel challenge, affects a significant proportion of the population. Pharmacological interventions are limited by adverse side effects, and effective nonpharmacological alternatives remain to be identified. Here, we introduce a novel attention-shifting method based on a closed-loop, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven, wearable mindfulness brain-computer interface (BCI) to alleviate car sickness. As the user performs an attentional task, i.e., focusing on breathing as in mindfulness, with a wearable headband, the BCI collects and analyzes electroencephalogr

Effects of prefrontal tDCS on executive function: Methodological considerations revealed by meta-analysis.

A meta-analysis of studies using single-session transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to target the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) was undertaken to examine the effect of stimulation on executive function (EF) in healthy samples. 27 studies were included in analyses, yielding 71 effect sizes. The most relevant measure for each task was determined a priori and used to calculate Hedge's g. Methodological characteristics of each study were examined individually as potential moderators of effect size. Stimulation effects on three domains of EF (inhibition of prepotent responses, m

Prefrontal cortical GABAergic signaling and impaired behavioral flexibility in aged F344 rats.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is critical for the ability to flexibly adapt established patterns of behavior in response to a change in environmental contingencies. Impaired behavioral flexibility results in maladaptive strategies such as perseveration on response options that no longer produce a desired outcome. Pharmacological manipulations of prefrontal cortical GABAergic signaling modulate behavioral flexibility in animal models, and prefrontal cortical interneuron dysfunction is implicated in impaired behavioral flexibility that accompanies neuropsychiatric disease. As deficits in behaviora

Compulsivity-related neurocognitive performance deficits in gambling disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Compulsivity is a core feature of addictive disorders, including gambling disorder. However, it is unclear to what extent this compulsive behavior in gambling disorder is associated with abnormal compulsivity-related neurocognitive functioning. Here, we summarize and synthesize the evidence for compulsive behavior, as assessed by compulsivity-related neurocognitive tasks, in individuals with gambling disorder compared to healthy controls (HCs). A total of 29 studies, comprising 41 task-results, were included in the systematic review; 32 datasets (n=1072 individuals with gambling disorder; n=13

Improving the neural mechanisms of cognition through the pursuit of happiness.

This paper reviews evidence on the neural basis of how positive mood states can modulate cognition, particularly during creative problem-solving. Studies performed over the past few decades demonstrate that individuals in a positive mood engage in a broader scope of attention, enhancing their access to distant and unusual semantic associations, and increasing task-shifting and problem-solving capacities. In this review, we summarize these behavioral studies; we then present recent findings on the changes in brain activation patterns that are induced by a positive mood when participants engage

Anti-Jo-1 antibody-positive arthropathy presenting as severe osteolysis of the distal interphalangeal joints.

Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is a relatively common problem, but the neuropsychological profile of affected individuals has seldom been studied outside of criminal justice recruitment settings. Non-treatment-seeking young adults (18-29 years) were recruited from the general community by media advertisements. Participants with ASPD (n = 17), free from substance use disorders, were compared with matched controls (n = 229) using objective computerized neuropsychological tasks tapping a range of cognitive domains. Compared with controls, individuals with ASPD showed significantly elevate

Evaluation of COSHH essentials: methylene chloride, isopropanol, and acetone exposures in a small printing plant.

The current study evaluated the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Essentials model for short-term task-based exposures and full-shift exposures using measured concentrations of three volatile organic chemicals at a small printing plant. A total of 188 exposure measurements of isopropanol and 187 measurements of acetone were collected and each measurement took approximately 60 min. Historically, collected time-weighted average concentrations (seven results) were evaluated for methylene chloride. The COSHH Essentials model recommended general ventilation control for both isopropa

Task-related reconfiguration patterns of frontoparietal network during motor imagery.

Motor imagery (MI) is closely associated with the frontoparietal network that includes prefrontal and posterior parietal regions. Studying task-related network reconfiguration after brain shifts from the resting state to the MI task is an important way to understand the brain's response process. However, how the brain modulates functional connectivity of the frontoparietal network when it shifts to MI has not been thoroughly studied. In this study, we attempted to characterize the frontoparietal network reconfiguration patterns as the brain transitioned to motor imagery tasks. We performed the

Empirical support for recognizing pathological buying/shopping as a mental disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To address the question of whether pathological buying/shopping differs from both risky and non-problematic buying/shopping. METHOD: Post-hoc analysis of data collected within the Addiction Research Unit FOR2974. Three predefined groups, as determined by face-to-face diagnostic interviews, were compared: with pathological (pBSh, n = 62), risky (rBSh, n = 62), and non-problematic (control group, CG, n = 117) buying/shopping. Questionnaires were used to assess symptom severity (according to ICD-11 criteria for disorders due to addictive behaviors), functional impairment, craving, exp

Home cage-based insights into motor learning and strategy adaptation in a Huntington disease mouse model.

Huntington disease (HD) is a genetic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Assessing early motor skill deficits in HD mouse models is challenging with traditional behavioral tasks. This study uses a home cage-based lever-pulling task, PiPaw2.0, to evaluate motor learning in 6-7 months-old zQ175 knock-in HD mice in a more naturalistic environment. In this task, mice learn to pull a lever for a water reward, with the requirement to hold the lever within a specific goal range for a required hold time. As the mi

Modifiable lifestyle factors associated with cognitive functioning among college students.

Cognitive health is crucial for lifelong independence, yet public health initiatives often overlook young adults, despite the importance of modifiable lifestyle factors alongside non-modifiable risks like age and genetics. This study investigated the associations between social engagement, diet, physical activity, sleep, and alcohol use, and cognitive task performance in a sample of 126 college students. Participants completed a cognitive battery measuring performance on tasks of executive function indexed by inhibitory control and cognitive set-shifting, working memory, processing speed, verb

Adapting to scarcity: Plasticity in rural healthcare practice.

Rural healthcare practitioners face persistent challenges such as limited staffing, geographic isolation, and broad scopes of responsibility. These conditions require constant adaptation to ensure care delivery. This study introduces plasticity as a conceptual lens for understanding how rural healthcare teams collectively navigate scarcity through flexible role and task shifting. Drawing on constructivist grounded theory, we conducted 19 interviews with nurses and physicians in emergency departments in two rural communities in Ontario, Canada, to explore how plasticity functions in rural healt…
