Effectiveness of Injury Prevention Programs With Core Muscle Strengthening Exercises to Reduce the Incidence of Hamstring Injury Among Soccer Players: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

CONTEXT: Muscles in the hamstring group are frequently injured in sporting activities. Injury prevention programs (IPPs), including eccentric training of the hamstrings, have proven to be of great value in decreasing the injury rate of hamstring muscles. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of IPPs that include core muscle strengthening exercises (CMSEs) in reducing hamstring injury rates. DATA SOURCES: This systematic review with meta-analysis was based upon the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A systematic search was conducted for r

Necrotizing fasciitis: an update on epidemiology, diagnostic methods, and treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to discuss the latest evidence of epidemiology, diagnostic methods, and treatment of necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) with a particular focus on necrotizing fasciitis (NF). RECENT FINDINGS: NSTIs have been historically referred to as NF but encompass a broader range of infections, with variable rates ranging from 0.86 to 32.64 per 100 000 person-years, influenced by factors such as climate and seasonal variations. They have diverse microbiological profiles categorized into different types based on the involved pathogens, including polymic

[Blast injuries part 2 : Principles of medical treatment].

Explosions can cause severe injuries, which affect multiple organ systems and leave extensive soft tissue defects. In unstable patients, damage control surgery initially focuses exclusively on controlling bleeding and contamination with the aim of preserving life and limbs. The excision of all necrotic tissue, extensive wound irrigation with antiseptic solutions and a calculated antibiotic prophylaxis, which is subsequently adapted to the microbiological findings, are the basis for sufficient infection control. As the tissue damage caused by the pressure surge can regenerate over time as well

A National Referral Service for Paediatric Brachytherapy: An Evolving Practice and Outcomes Over 13 Years.

AIMS: Most children requiring radiotherapy receive external beam treatment and few have tumours suitable for brachytherapy. No paediatric radiotherapy centre will treat enough patients from its own normal catchment population for expertise in brachytherapy to be developed and sustained. Following discussion and agreement in the national paediatric radiotherapy group, a service for paediatric brachytherapy in the UK has been developed. We report the process that has evolved over more than 10 years, with survival and functional outcome results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Since 2009, potential patie

Foot malignancies: a multidisciplinary approach.

Malignant osseous and soft tissue tumors of the foot are rare and should be considered in patients who have foot-related symptoms. Most sarcomas affect patients who are older than 55 years; however, many young patients who are otherwise healthy, may present with malignant foot and ankle lesions. In addition to benign and malignant neoplasms, pseudotumorous conditions mimic neoplastic lesions and should be differentiated before any treatment is undertaken. Invasiveness is a characteristic of sarcomas. The foot is a terminal anatomic structure, with closed and tight compartments and well-vascula

Autologous Cell Harvesting System as Adjunct for Soft-tissue Reconstruction of Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infection.

Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) cause rapidly progressing destruction of skin and soft tissue, leaving large soft tissue defects and necessitating complex reconstruction. RECELL, an autologous cell harvesting device, provides a regenerative epidermal suspension (RES) from a small split-thickness skin biopsy for the substitution of (or in addition to) split-thickness skin grafting (STSG). We present a case of a 56-year-old man with extensive NSTI managed by serial debridement, leading to a degloving injury to the right upper extremity, axilla, flank and back, which was later reconstr

Chronic Morel-Lavallée Lesion Treated With Percutaneous Ultrasonic Debridement.

Morel-Lavallée lesion is defined as an internal degloving injury. A trauma involving shearing forces causes separation of the superficial fascia from the overlying subcutaneous tissue and skin, creating a potential space for hemolymphatic fluid to accumulate. This leads to the development of a self-resolving or potentially chronic collection. Classically, lesions arise in the lateral thigh. Imaging features depend on the duration of the lesion. Acutely, ultrasound and MR imaging will demonstrate a hematoma-like mass that is parallel to the underlying fascia. As the lesion evolves over time, ca

Pulsed Red and Blue Photobiomodulation for the Treatment of Thigh Contusions and Soft Tissue Injury: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

CONTEXT: Contusion and soft tissue injuries are common in sports. Photobiomodultion, light and laser therapy, is an effective aid to increase healing rates and improve function after various injury mechanisms. However, it is unclear how well photobiomodulation improves function after a contusion soft tissue injury. This study aimed to determine the effects of a pulsed red and blue photobiomodulation light patch on muscle function following a human thigh contusion injury. DESIGN: Single-blinded randomized control trial design. METHODS: We enrolled 46 healthy participants. Participants complet

The role of neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy in the management of localized high-grade soft tissue sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Standard treatment of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) of the extremities includes limb-sparing surgery combined with pre- or postoperative radiotherapy (RT). The role of perioperative chemotherapy (CTX) remains uncertain. STS patients with high-risk features for local recurrence, distant metastases, and increased mortality may require additional systemic therapy. The objective of this study was to evaluate predictors of outcome regarding local control (LC), overall survival (OS), and freedom from distant metastases (FFDM) in a large single-center cohort of patients suffering from localiz

[Systematic planning of surgery for soft tissue sarcoma of the extremities].

Soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities are rarely malignant tumors. They are best treated by an experienced interdisciplinary sarcoma team. A preoperative biopsy and imaging are prerequisites for successful sarcoma treatment. Before surgery the multimodal treatment and the extent of resection and, if necessary, plastic reconstruction should be discussed in a multidisciplinary tumor board. The aim is always a complete R0 resection with optimal preservation of function. The preservation of critical structures (e. g. sciatic nerve) by a planned focal marginal resection along the critical structu

[Consensus soft tissue tumors. Dutch Workgroup Soft-Tissue Tumors].

Soft-tissue sarcomas constitute a rare group of malignant tumours with histopathological features of connective, muscular, fatty or peripheral nervous tissue. The prognosis at manifestation depends on only two factors: the spread, both local and remote, and the biological behaviour of the tumour. The latter factor cannot be influenced but the former can: by inexpert manipulation. Consequently, tumours suspected of being soft-tissue sarcomas require multidisciplinary management from the beginning, with the team members familiar with each other's diagnostic and therapeutic skills.
