Using indirect immunofluorescence, cryostat sections from renal biopsy specimens of 14 adult patients showing marked diffuse thinning of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) on ultrastructural analysis were examined for the presence of the Goodpasture (GP) epitope M2 using anti-M2 antiserum. In no case was a total absence of M2 noted. Thin-membrane nephropathy recently has been described as a cause of glomerular haematuria. The prognosis of the condition is unclear but it generally is considered to be benign. In a series of 92 patients with glomerular haematuria, thin-membrane nephropathy was found to be a common cause, occurring in 26 (28%) patients. Sixteen patients were women. The mean age was 42 years. Four patients had a family history of renal disease or haematuria and no patient was deaf. Haematuria had been present from six days to 30 years. CT-guided percutaneous thin-needle aspiration biopsy of 23 mediastinal and 27 other thoracic masses was performed in 40 patients over a 2-year period. Although biplane fluoroscopy is considered the optimal guidance mechanism for thoracic biopsy, CT was required in this group of patients to ensure accurate needle placement within the lesions or within the most appropriate subsegment of necrotic lesions. Ureteral obstruction after treatment for abdominal cancers is a common situation in which the thin needle biopsy presents an attractive low morbidity alternative to laparotomy for the diagnosis of malignant disease. A negative biopsy is still nonconclusive, although helpful in determining the next step in the patient's management. In our own series, biopsy in the region of ureteral obstruction revealed tumor rather than benign disease in four of five patients. No morbidity was encountered.

A combined technique of two dimensional thin layer chromatography with fluorescent scanning was applied to the estimation of urinary porphyrins in 2 patients with porphyria cutanea tarda. Porphyrin patterns were also examined with the technique on urine, liver and skin samples obtained from a hexachlorobenzene-induced porphyric rat. Results obtained showed that uroporphyrin and hepta-carboxylic porphyrin were predominant in the urine, liver and skin.

A method was developed for the recovery of 29 alkaloids from TLC plates after they had been complexed with either potassium iodoplatinate (for tertiary amines) or carbon disulphide (for primary and secondary amines). The split-thickness skin graft (STSG) donor site is the commonest used during burn surgery which has its own complications and as such the focus should be on minimizing it.
