A voltammetric method for the determination of tin is proposed to minimise interferences from noble metals that are commonly encountered with other analytical techniques. Strong distortions of voltammetric peaks are observed in the presence of platinum. On the basis of a full investigation, the formation of an intermediate Sn(II)-Pt mixed chloro-complex at the electrode surface is identified as being responsible for the platinum interference, as it competes with the normal Sn(IV)-->Sn(0)Hg reduction. Recent studies of the synthesis, structures, spectroscopic properties, and reactions of a series of isolable metallylenes (R2E:, E = Si (1), Ge (2), and Sn (3); R2 = 1,1,4,4-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)butane-1,4-diyl) are summarized. The effects of dietary tin on copper status and on enzymes and metabolites involved in hepatocellular antioxidant protection were measured in rats fed copper-adequate or copper-deficient diets with glucose or fructose. The effect of organic lead and tin compounds upon the integrity of cerebral neurotubules has been studies in vitro and in vivo, using 3H-colchicine binding as an index of tubulin aggregation. Triethyl tin, trimethyl lead and triethyl lead chlorides at concentrations above 5 X 10(-5)M, all prevented the polymerization of tubulin. Inorganic lead had a similar effect. Male Fischer-344 rats were given 14 doses of triethyl tin (TET) sc over a period of 3 wk. Responsiveness to painful stimulation and muscular strength were measured at the end of dosing and after 2 wk of recovery.
