Detection of a poorly functioning malpositioned kidney with single ectopic ureter in girls with urinary dribbling: imaging evaluation in five patients.

OBJECTIVE: Some girls with lifelong continuous dribbling of urine despite successful toilet training have urographic or sonographic evidence of only one kidney. Such girls are likely to have a contralateral, poorly functioning, nonvisualized, malpositioned kidney with a nonduplicated collecting system and ureter draining through an ectopic orifice. Our objective was to analyze our experience with this group of patients to determine how best to confirm the presence and show the location of this abnormal kidney. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the medical records and imaging studies of five …

Understanding the perspectives of older adults and physiotherapists on home-based lower-limb exoskeletons.

Older adults often experience a decline in functional abilities, affecting their independence and mobility at home. Wearable lower-limb exoskeletons (LLEs) have the potential to serve as both assistive devices to support mobility and training tools to enhance physical capabilities. However, active end-user involvement is crucial to ensure LLEs align with users' needs and preferences. This study employed a co-design methodology to explore home-based LLE requirements from the perspectives of older adults with mobility impairments and physiotherapists. Four older adults with self-reported mobilit

Lich-Gregoir vs. Cohen ureteral re-implantation surgery for bilateral vesicoureteral reflux: A propensity score analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Lich-Gregoir procedure for bilateral vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is limited by the risk of urinary retention. Here, we investigated the efficacy of the Lich-Gregoir procedure compared to that of the Cohen procedure for bilateral VUR in children. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated children who underwent open ureteral re-implantation for bilateral VUR between 2010 and 2022. The patients' clinical characteristics and perioperative outcomes were compared after 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM). RESULTS: A total of 137 patients were enrolled in this study, with 122 undergoing

Practice of clean intermittent catheterisation in children with spina bifida: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Spina bifida is a congenital neural tube defect, where there is incomplete formation of the spinal cord and vertebrae, resulting in abnormal development of the neural tube. This affects bladder function and urinary incontinence. Clean Intermittent Catheterization (CIC) is used to manage bladder and bowel management. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to scope evidence on the facilitators and barriers to usage and practice of CIC in children with spina bifida in low-income countries. METHOD: We searched databases including PubMed, Web of Science and SCOPUS, and screened articles for incl

Abnormal Perception of Urge to Defecate: An Important Pathophysiological Mechanism in Women With Chronic Constipation.

INTRODUCTION: Although the association of absent or attenuated "call to stool" with constipation is well-recognized, no studies have systematically evaluated the perception of urge to defecate in a well-defined cohort of patients with chronic constipation (CC). METHODS: A prospective study of 43 healthy adult women and 140 consecutive adult women attending a tertiary center for investigation of CC. All participants completed a 5-day viscerosensory questionnaire, and all women with CC also underwent anorectal physiologic investigations. Normal urge perception and abnormal urge perception were

Bladder/bowel dysfunction in pre-school children following febrile urinary tract infection in infancy.

BACKGROUND: An association between bladder-bowel dysfunction (BBD) and urinary tract infection (UTI) is well-known. However, a question less explored is whether children with UTI early in life also have increased prevalence of BBD after they are toilet-trained. In this study, consecutively selected children with pyelonephritis during their first year of life were assessed for BBD at pre-school age. METHODS: Ninety-two children (51 boys) hospitalized due to pyelonephritis during their first year of life were assessed for BBD at median age 5.4 years. A validated BBD questionnaire, along with ur

Multicystic dysplastic kidney: is an initial voiding cystourethrogram necessary?

INTRODUCTION: Traditionally, a voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) has been obtained in patients diagnosed with multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) because of published vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) rates between 10%-20%. However, with the diagnosis and treatment of low grade VUR undergoing significant changes, we questioned the utility of obtaining a VCUG in healthy patients with a MCDK. We reviewed our experience to see how many of the patients with documented VUR required surgical intervention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of children diagnosed with unilateral MCDK
