Liver nuclear and microsomal CYP2E1-mediated metabolism of xenobiotics in rats chronically drinking an alcohol-containing liquid diet.

In previous studies from our laboratory, the presence in highly purified liver nuclei of metabolic pathways for processing ethanol (EtOH), N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), carbon tetrachloride and chloroform was reported. All these chemicals are known to be metabolized in liver microsomes, via cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E)-mediated processes. In the present work we checked whether rat liver nuclei from rats chronically drinking an alcohol-containing liquid diet exhibited an enhanced ability to metabolize chemicals known to require CYP2E1 participation for given metabolic transformations. The nicot

Comparing the efficacy of VELscope with vital stains in the diagnosis of (common) oral potentially malignant disorders an observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) are a diverse group of oral mucosal lesions that carry an increased risk of malignant transformation. Although biopsy is the gold standard for the diagnosis of these lesions, early detection is crucial, emphasizing the need to introduce more reliable non-invasive screening modalities. The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of VELscope and vital tissue staining techniques as screening tools in the detection of early dysplastic changes in OPMDS, such as oral leukoplakia (OL), oral lichen planus (OLP) & oral submucous fibrosis (OSM

The Effect of Intra-articular versus Intravenous Injection of Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Experimentally-Induced Knee Joint Osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative debilitating disease, primarily affects joints, particularly weight-bearing areas. The surface layer of the articular cartilage breaks down and wears away leading to rubbing of bones, pain, swelling, and joint stiffness. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the possible therapeutic effects of intra-articular versus intravenous injection of umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells (UCB-MSCs) against mono-iodoacetate-induced OA of the knee joints in male albino rats, using histological and immunohistochemical techniques. Biodegradation of acetochlor by microbial consortium AT1: microcosm centric microbiomic-metabolomics mechanisms and environmental remediation feasibility.

The excessive use of herbicide acetochlor (ACT) threatens crop health and the environment, necessitating effective remediation strategies. This study focused on a consortium named AT1, enriched from ACT-contaminated soil. Under optimized conditions (25 °C, pH 7, 1 % inoculum), AT1 almost completely degraded ACT (50-1000 mg/L) within 6-12 days. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene revealed a reduction in community diversity over time, with Sphingomonas (58.6 %) and Diaphorobacter (26.43 %) as dominant taxa. A structure model and network analysis indicated strong microbial competition dur

Determination of resistance status to amitraz in the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus from Luzon, Philippines, through bioassay and molecular analysis.

Tick infestations and tick-borne diseases are among the leading causes of economic losses in the cattle industry worldwide. Amitraz is one of the most commonly used chemical acaricides against the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Resistance to amitraz has been reported in many countries but not in the Philippines. This study aimed to determine whether cattle ticks from provinces in northern and southern Luzon, Philippines, are resistant to amitraz. Engorged or nearly engorged female ticks were collected from 21 farms and allowed to lay eggs to produce larvae. Larval packet test

Evaluation of potential miticide toxicity to Varroa destructor and honey bees, Apis mellifera, under laboratory conditions.

The honey bee, Apis mellifera L., is the world's most important managed pollinator of agricultural crops, however, Varroa mite, Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman, infestation has threatened honey bee survivorship. Low efficacy and development of Varroa mite resistance to currently used Varroacides has increased the demand for innovative, effective treatment tool options that exhibit high efficacy, while minimizing adverse effects on honey bee fitness. In this investigation, the toxicity of 16 active ingredients and 9 formulated products of registered miticides for use on crops from 12 che

Pharmacological characterization of a tyramine receptor from the southern cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus.

The southern cattle tick (Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus) is a hematophagous external parasite that vectors the causative agents of bovine babesiosis or cattle tick fever, Babesia bovis and B. bigemina, and anaplasmosis, Anaplasma marginale. The southern cattle tick is a threat to the livestock industry in many locations throughout the world. Control methods include the use of chemical acaricides including amitraz, a formamidine insecticide, which is proposed to activate octopamine receptors. Previous studies have identified a putative octopamine receptor from the southern cattle tick in

Scabies: a ubiquitous neglected skin disease.

Scabies has been a scourge among human beings for thousands of years. Its worldwide occurrence with epidemics during war, famine, and overcrowding is responsible for an estimated 300 million people currently infested. Scabies refers to the various skin lesions produced by female mites, and their eggs and scybala that are deposited in the epidermis, leading to delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction. Recent immunological findings such as cross-reactivity with house dust mite allergens and an altered T-helper-1/T-helper-2 pattern contribute to a better understanding of the pathomechanism. Further

Teriflunomide Concentrations in Cerebrospinal Fluid and Plasma in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis: A Pharmacokinetic Study.

BACKGROUND: Teriflunomide is a disease modifying treatment (DMT) approved for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) in adults and children. It reduces lymphocyte proliferation by inhibiting the mitochondrial enzyme dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) and thereby the pyrimidine synthesis. Although most DMTs in multiple sclerosis (MS) modulate or inhibit the immune system in the periphery, the efficacy may improve if the agent also targets immune activity within the central nervous system (CNS), acts as a neuro-protective and enhances neuro-regeneration. The objective of this study was
