Paragangliomas of the head and neck are rare. We describe the case of an 11-year-old girl who presented with an enlarged right palatine tonsil (grade 4). After a bilateral tonsillectomy, microscopic examination of the right tonsillar tissue revealed well-formed nests of polygonal epithelial cells separated by a collagenous stroma. The tumor cell nuclei were centrally placed and featured finely clumped chromatin and moderate anisonucleosis. Occasional mitotic figures were present. No necrosis was seen. We present a case of adenomyoepithlioma (AME) arising from the tonsil. AME is an uncommon tumor that typically arises in breast, but rarely found in salivary glands, lung, and skin. Its biological features have not been thoroughly characterized. Here we describe a primary AME originating from the tonsil. The pathologic changes were characterized by hypercellularity, the dominance of both epithelial and myoepithelial cells. Lipomas are benign tumors composed of mature fat cells. They occur frequently in subcutaneous tissue but rarely in the upper aerodigestive tract. Tonsillar lipomas are rare. To our knowledge, there are only six documented cases in the English literature. Here, we present the case of a 46-year-old Taiwanese female with a submerged oval yellowish mass in her left palatine tonsil. She received tonsillectomy and the pathologic diagnosis was tonsillar lipoma. The clinical presentation, management and literature review are also presented.

Lipomatous tumors represent an unfrequent cause for upper aerodigestive tract neoplasms, specially concerning the palatine tonsils, that should be included in their differential diagnosis. A case of palatine tonsil lipoma in a 11 year-old girl is reported and a revision of the available literature and some considerations about this condition are provided.

A patient with unilateral tonsillar enlargement secondary to locally invasive candidal infection is presented. This was not associated with any history of immunosuppression or prolonged use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Invasive candidal infection of the tonsil has not previously been reported.

Hairy polyps or dermoids of the oro- and naso-pharynx are benign lesions containing elements of both ectodermal and mesodermal origin. We report a case of a hairy polyp arising from the tonsil in a three-week-old infant. This presented as an intermittent swelling in the mouth, which was successfully removed under general anaesthesia. To our knowledge this is only the third case of a hairy polyp arising at this site to be reported. We discuss the terminology applied to these lesions and review the literature.

This study was carried out in 165 patients submitted to the surgery of tonsils or adenoid from 1977 to 1989 at the Botucatu Medical School Hospital. The clinical signs and histopathological findings were reviewed. All patients exhibited similar complaints with recurrent tonsillitis, sore throat, dysphasia, high temperature, and enlarged tonsils. After surgery, the tonsils was submitted to histopathological study and showed "grains" in the crypts in 6 cases. Four cases (2.4%) of Actinomyces and two (1.2%) of Botryomyces were identified. A case of unsuspected sarcoidosis of the tonsils and adenoids presenting as nasal airway obstruction in a child believed to have chronic tonsillitis with adenoid hypertrophy is reported.
