Ectopia or concomitant hypohyperdontia? A case report.

This report describes the unusual appearance seen on a panoramic radiograph of an orthodontic patient which the authors argue may represent ectopia or concomitant hypohyperdontia of the mandibular premolar teeth. A literature review describes the frequency of such anomalies in this area from previous studies. The presenting features of the patient and the differential diagnoses are explored. Treatment planning is discussed and treatment carried out in this particular case is detailed. The unusual symmetrical bilateral anomalies in this patient may point to a genetic determinant of tooth germ p…

[A mistake in the picture processing procedure?].

A 12-year old boy was referred to an orthodontist. During examination of his dental status a swelling was seen at the right side of his palate. Further examination demonstrated a central giant cell granuloma. This is a rare benign tumor that often causes local destruction of the bone and displacement of teeth. Surgical curettage of these large central giant cell granulomas gives mulilations of the jaws and loss of teeth and tooth germs. Furthermore, it has a high recurrence rate. Therefore, calcitonin was chosen as an alternative therapy.

Expression of β-catenin and MSX1 proteins during parrot pseudoteeth and goose denticulations and giant filiform papillae's early development.

OBJECTIVE: To use immunohistochemistry to analyse the expression of MSX1 and β-catenin proteins during parrot pseudoteeth development and go … d to differ from true teeth in their mechanism of development: evagination vs invagination. In true tooth germs, MSX1 express mainly in the mesenchyme. In conclusion, our findings do reinforce the homologies between all these appendages but also reveal a key difference between the development of tooth germs, pseudoteeth and denticulations. Our findings also …

Inferolateral Displacement of a Maxillary Third Molar Along the Buccal Fat Pad: A Case Report and Anatomical Note.

Iatrogenic displacement of maxillary third molars is an uncommon complication, usually reported in the maxillary sinus or deep posterior spaces. Buccal displacement along the buccal fat pad is rare and may be overlooked. We report the case of a 13-year-old female patient referred after attempted extraction of a maxillary right third molar germ under local anesthesia, resulting in inferolateral displacement. Cone-beam computed tomography localized the tooth in a superficial buccal position, outside the maxillary sinus, infratemporal fossa, pterygopalatine fossa, and parapharyngeal space. Clinic

KMT2D Regulates Tooth Enamel Development.

Amelogenesis, the process of enamel formation, is tightly regulated and essential for producing the tooth enamel that protects teeth from de … mel, partially phenocopying human Kabuki syndrome. Additionally, Kmt2d-cKO neonates developed molar tooth germs with subtle cusp shape alterations and mild delays in ameloblast differentiation at birth. RNA sequencing analysis of the first molar tooth germ at birth revealed that 33.7% of known amelogenesis-related genes were significantly downregulated in th …

Immediate repositioning of an accidentally extruded immature premolar after extracting root remnants of the primary molar.

This article describes a case where during an extraction of a primary molar's root remnant, the successor permanent tooth was accidentally extruded. The extruded tooth was immediately repositioned to its right position in the socket and it erupted normally after a short time. After 2 years, a routine clinical examination revealed normal appearance of the premolar in the dental arch. A radiograph demonstrated an obliterated coronal part of the pulp, normal root length, a slightly open apex and no periapical inflammation.

Dental Abnormalities in Immature Dogs with a History of Mandibular Fractures.

This study was performed to report the dental abnormalities encountered in immature dogs with a history of mandibular fracture. Dogs were in … l procedure to treat dental abnormalities after mandibular fracture healing. The development of the tooth germs located in or near a mandibular fracture is frequently affected. Radiographic evaluation of the area of trauma is recommended until eruption and full development of the teeth are completed.

[Radiographic study of formation and calcification of the third molar].

A total of 500 orthopantomographic X-rays of Mexican children and teenagers of either sex, aged 7-18, were studied in order to ascertain the development and calcification stages of their third molars, as well as the most frequent anomalies related with them. It was observed that the dental bud appears between ages nine and eleven, and that the third molar is absent in 32.4% of the population, with a predominance of females over males. It was also found that 7.4% of molars evidenced malposition during their early stages of development. In view of such findings, the authors consider that a diagn

Role of two mineral-associated adhesion molecules, osteopontin and bone sialoprotein, during cementogenesis.

Adhesion molecules and their cell membrane receptors are known to play important regulatory roles in cell differentiation. Consequently, the following experiments were conducted to determine the role of two adhesion molecules, bone sialoprotein (BSP) and osteopontin (OPN) in tooth root formation. Developing murine molar tooth germs at sequential stages of development (developmental days 21-42) were analyzed using immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization techniques. While BSP was localized to alveolar bone and odontoblasts early in development, BSP was distinctly localized to the cemental …

Early orofacial development.

Early orofacial development is a period of very rapid allometric growth and specialization of tissue. During the first three years of life, the brain achieves approximately 90% of its growth and the face reaches almost 65% of its adult size. Between birth and three years of age the oral cavity changes form and function, replacing gum pads with a dentition composed of twenty primary teeth. By three years of age, all succedaneous teeth are developing as well as the first permanent molars. Involvement with neonates and infants by neonatologists, pediatricians, and pediatric dentists begs a better

Development of dentition: From initiation to occlusion and related diseases.

BACKGROUND: The development of dentition begins in the embryonic oral cavity and progresses in the branchial arches and alveolar bone. Continuous cellular and molecular crosstalk occurs during crown formation, after which the tooth germ begins to migrate apically through the alveolar process into the oral cavity. It eventually comes in contact with its antagonist in the contralateral jaw to establish functional occlusion. Any defect in either step can result in delayed tooth development, the spectrum of which varies from a congenitally missing tooth to an impacted tooth (infraocclusion) with a…

Morphological study of tooth development in podoplanin-deficient mice.

Podoplanin is a mucin-type highly O-glycosylated glycoprotein identified in several somatyic cells: podocytes, alveolar epithelial cells, ly … ce of podoplanin is lethal at birth by the respiratory failure. In this report, we investigated the tooth germ development in podoplanin-knockout mice, and the dentin formation in podoplanin-conditional knockout mice having neural crest-derived cells with deficiency in podoplanin by the Wnt1 promoter and enhancer-driven Cre recombinase: Wnt1-Cre;PdpnΔ/Δmice. …

Clinical problems with a double tooth and a macrodont in the maxillary anterior area: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fusion is defined as the union between dentine and/or enamel of two normally separated teeth. Gemination is the cleavage of the forming dental germ to produce two partial teeth. The distinction between the conditions is often determined by the number of teeth present. However, this can be confused if supernumerary teeth are considered. AIM: The present case report describes the treatment of a patient who presented with dental fusion and macrodontia involving both upper central incisors. Besides the central incisors displaying characteristics of macrodonts, tooth 21 also showed asp
