Oral Health and Behavior Patterns of Women with Eating Disorders-A Clinical Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stomach regurgitation associated with eating disorders (EDs) poses a high risk for tooth erosion. This study investigated oral health conditions, behavioral patterns, and tooth erosion in women with EDs. METHODS: 16 ED and 13 healthy women were enrolled; 14 ED and 10 healthy control subjects completed the study. Subjects completed demographic, medical, oral, and behavioral health history questionnaires. Dental caries status was recorded as Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT)index and the severity of tooth erosion as Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) scores. Saliva

Incisor Disorders of Merino Sheep (Ovis aries).

This study documents dental anomalies in 2414 Merino ewe sheep (Ovis aries) from 7 Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association sites observed during routine husbandry. Teeth were photographed and evaluated using visual scoring protocols to assess plaque accumulation, enamel wear, and other anomalies across all incisors. Plaque scoring revealed a median plaque score of 3 (IQR ± 1) on buccal surfaces and 2 (IQR ± 2) on lingual surfaces, indicating substantial plaque accumulation across incisors. Two cases of geminated incisors and one case of fused central incisors were identified, representin

Unexpected malocclusion in a 13,000-Year-old Late Pleistocene young woman from Mexico.

To analyze the etiological factors behind the malocclusion of a Late Pleistocene woman (named Naia), who is the best-preserved of the earliest individuals of the American continent. The examination of Naia's malocclusion was performed through cephalometric and occlusal analyses, and by measuring her mandible. Her data were then compared to published data for modern, medieval, and postmedieval samples and seven Late Pleistocene individuals. Naia presented her permanent dentition fully erupted, except for the impacted mandibular third molars. She presented a class II molar malocclusion with crow

Esthetic management of anterior dental anomalies: A clinical case.

Many types of dental abnormality can be observed in the anterior sectors, where they can cause genuine esthetic problems for our patients. While conventional prosthetic treatments offer the best solutions in terms of esthetic result and durability, they involve the sacrifice of significant quantities of mineralized dental material and cannot be undertaken before the periodontal tissues are mature. Other less invasive alternatives should be envisaged as transitional, or sometimes even permanent, solutions for the management of these anomalies in children and adolescents. This article discusses

Two hominin incisor teeth from the middle Pleistocene site of Boxgrove, Sussex, England.

In 1995-1996 two isolated hominin lower incisors were found at the middle Pleistocene site of Boxgrove in England, with Lower Palaeolithic archaeology. Boxgrove 2 is a permanent lower right central incisor and Boxgrove 3 a permanent lower left lateral incisor. They were found separately, but close to one another and appear to belong to the same individual. The Boxgrove 1 tibia discovered in 1993 came from a different stratigraphic context and is thus believed to represent a different individual. This paper describes the morphology of the incisors, which is similar to other middle Pleistocene h

Association of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease With Dental Erosion.

Gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) or chronic acid reflux disorder is a condition in which acid-containing contents continuously leak from the stomach and return to the esophagus. Acid reflux disease occurs in nearly every person at some unspecified time. In reality, it is considered as a reoccurrence of acid reflux disease disorder and heartburn, every day. However, when you have acid reflux disorder/heartburn greater than two times every week over numerous weeks, constantly take heartburn medicinal tablets and antacids. However, if your signs and symptoms and symptoms keep returning, yo

Robust age estimation of southern sea otters from multiple morphometrics.

Reliable age estimation is an essential tool to assess the status of wildlife populations and inform successful management. Aging methods, however, are often limited by too few data, skewed demographic representation, and by single or uncertain morphometric relationships. In this study, we synthesize age estimates in southern sea otters Enhydra lutris nereis from 761 individuals across 34 years of study, using multiple noninvasive techniques and capturing all life stages from 0 to 17 years of age. From wild, stranded, and captive individuals, we describe tooth eruptions, tooth wear, body lengt…

Glazed vs. Polished Zirconia: How Surface Finishes Affect Human Enamel and Dentin Wear.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the wear behavior of different zirconia types on dental tissues is essential for long-term clinical success. AIM: Abrasion of dental materials, enamel, and dentin is a key complication in clinical practice. This study aimed to investigate the wear of enamel and dentin against polished and polished-then-glazed 3% and 5% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3Y-/5Y-TZP). METHODS: Ninety conical samples (4 mm diameter, 7 mm height; n = 9/group) were fabricated from 3Y-TZP, 5Y-TZP, and feldspar ceramic. A total of 10 groups were prepared from feldspar ceramic (18), 3Y-TZP (36), a

The association between dental wear and reduced vertical dimension of the face: a morphologic study on human skulls.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between dental wear and facial morphology, with particular reference to the occlusal vertical dimension, in modern human skulls. DESIGN: One hundred and three skulls (52 men and 51 women) between the ages of 20 and 50+ years old were studied. The selected skulls were from a modern period (the 17th and the 18th centuries) and included at least one entire condyle and had at least 3 posterior teeth (premolar or molar) in each quadrant to allow for dental articulation. Occlusal wear was evaluated using ordinal scale (0-4) and vertic

Periodontal considerations in veneer cases.

Porcelain veneers are a minimally invasive technique to enhance patients' smiles. A crucial component in these cases is the supporting periodontal apparatus and its interaction with the restorations. This article addresses basic concepts such as biologic width, altered eruption patterns, appropriate gingival contouring and smile design to give practitioners the tools to diagnose, evaluate and treat cases successfully and predictably.

Quantitative aspects of the ruminating process in giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) fed with different diets.

Giraffes are ruminants feeding on fresh browse and twigs in the wild, but in zoos, their diet is mainly based on alfalfa hay, grains, and pellets occasionally supplemented by twigs and foliage. These diets, which differ in composition and digestibility, affect the behavior of the animals, tooth wear patterns, and chewing efficiency. We quantified several parameters of the rumination process in ten zoo housed giraffes of different sexes and ages fed either with alfalfa hay, fresh browse, or a combination of both. Chewing during rumination was highly ritualized and specimens showed an even distr…

Management of Pathological Dental Attrition in Prader-Willi Syndrome: A Case Report Using the Personalized Radboud Strategy.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by obesity, hypotonia, intellectual disability, and behavioral disturbances that complicate dental management. Parafunctional habits such as bruxism often lead to severe tooth wear, while cooperation and anesthesia represent additional challenges. A 34-year-old woman with genetically confirmed PWS presented with generalized dental wear, poor oral hygiene, and multiple carious lesions. Preventive and splint therapies were initially proposed but not feasible. Two years later, she returned with pain due to pulp exposure. Because…
