NFL-BA: Near-Field Light Bundle Adjustment for SLAM in Dynamic Lighting.

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems typically assume static, distant illumination; however, many real-world scenarios, such as endoscopy, subterranean robotics, and search & rescue in collapsed environments, require agents to operate with a co-located light and camera in the absence of external lighting. In such cases, dynamic near-field lighting introduces strong, view-dependent shading that significantly degrades SLAM performance. We introduce Near-Field Lighting Bundle Adjustment Loss (NFL-BA) which explicitly models near-field lighting as a part of Bundle Adjustment loss a

Development and In-Field Validation of an Autonomous Soil Mechanical Resistance Sensor.

Soil compaction is a widespread problem, leading to soil degradation, yield losses, and adverse environmental impacts. Nowadays, various measurement methods exist to assess and map soil compaction, with vertical cone penetration resistance measurements being one of the most commonly used. This method is easy, rapid, inexpensive, and generally accepted. However, manual penetration resistance measurements are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and often less accurate due to inconsistent penetration speed. To address these limitations, an automated penetrometer was developed and integrated on an au

Mapping Therapeutic Regulatory T Cell Fate with MRI: Current Strategies and Translational Outlook.

Adoptive cell therapies, and more specifically, regulatory T cell (Treg) therapies, have shown significant therapeutic promise across multiple immune-mediated diseases including graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), solid organ transplant (SOT) rejection, and autoimmune diseases. One key challenge is the lack of insight into the biodistribution and fate of adoptively transferred T cells and Tregs in living organisms. These uncertainties delay progress on establishing optimal dosage(s), infusion timing and route, as well as investigations into off-target effects. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ce

Fault Diagnosis and Handling of the Two-Dimensional Tracking Servo System for Space.

Aiming at the on-orbit safety problem of the two-dimensional tracking servo system for space, based on ant colony optimization (ACO) and expert systems, this paper proposes a fault diagnosis and handling strategy of the two-dimensional (2D) tracking servo system for space. Specifically, a fault library was established for the tracking servo system according to field observations. The ACO was called to optimize the classification of fault features. In addition, sensitivity and specificity were defined to evaluate the classification performance of the diagnosis rules found by the ant colony, aim

Geometry-dependent migration dynamics of fibroblasts on ECM protein micropatterns.

Extracellular matrix (ECM) micropatterns provide well-defined adhesive environments for investigating how geometric confinement influences cell migration. Here, we combined ECM protein micropatterning with quantitative live-cell microscopy to examine NIH 3T3 fibroblast migration on straight and sinusoidal adhesive tracks. Time-lapse bright-field imaging, actin fluorescence imaging, centroid tracking, migration-rate quantification and aspect-ratio analysis revealed distinct migration behaviours under confined adhesion. On straight tracks, cells exhibited either oscillatory migration, characteri

ASSESSMENT OF CLINICAL AND IMAGISTIC STRUCTURAL PROGRESSION IN GLAUCOMA.

Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy, characterized by loss of retinal ganglion cells and retinal nerve fiber layer as well as visual field loss. Therefore, in glaucoma, the correlation between structure and function is important, since it can be useful for tracking glaucomatous changes and for following the progression of the disease.

Learning to rapidly re-contact the lost plume in chemical plume tracing.

Maintaining contact between the robot and plume is significant in chemical plume tracing (CPT). In the time immediately following the loss of chemical detection during the process of CPT, Track-Out activities bias the robot heading relative to the upwind direction, expecting to rapidly re-contact the plume. To determine the bias angle used in the Track-Out activity, we propose an online instance-based reinforcement learning method, namely virtual trail following (VTF). In VTF, action-value is generalized from recently stored instances of successful Track-Out activities. We also propose a colla

Humanizing the homeless: does contact erode stereotypes?

This paper employs a field experiment to assess whether interpersonal contact changes domiciled individuals' attitudes of the homeless. Volunteers for Project Homeless Connect-a one-day event that provides social services to the homeless-were asked to complete a pre- and post-survey. The results provide mixed support for the contact hypothesis. After volunteering, respondents were far less likely to see homelessness as the result of individual characteristics, such as substance abuse or work aversion. However, opinion was remarkably stable when it came to policy preferences. The results cast d

A free-fall determination of the newtonian constant of gravity.

Recent determinations of the Newtonian constant of gravity have produced values that differ by nearly 40 times their individual error estimates (more than 0.5%). In an attempt to help resolve this situation, an experiment that uses the gravity field of a one-half metric ton source mass to perturb the trajectory of a free-falling mass and laser interferometry to track the falling object was performed. This experiment does not suspend the test mass from a support system. It is therefore free of many systematic errors associated with supports. The measured value was G = (6.6873 +/- 0. 0094) x 10(

Quantifying Local Strain Field and Deformation in Active Contraction of Bladder Using a Pretrained Transformer Model: A Speckle-Free Approach.

Accurate quantification of local strain fields during bladder contraction is essential for understanding the biomechanics of bladder micturition, in both health and disease. Conventional digital image correlation (DIC) methods have been successfully applied to various biological tissues; however, this approach requires artificial speckling, which can alter both passive and active properties of the tissue. In this study, we introduce a speckle-free framework for quantifying local strain fields using a state-of-the-art, zero-shot transformer model, CoTracker3. We utilized a custom-designed, port

Early warning- and track and trigger systems for newborn infants: A review.

Tools for clinical assessment and escalation of observation and treatment are insufficiently established in the newborn population. We aimed to provide an overview over early warning- and track and trigger systems for newborn infants and performed a nonsystematic review based on a search in Medline and Cinahl until November 2015. Search terms included 'infant, newborn', 'early warning score', and 'track and trigger'. Experts in the field were contacted for identification of unpublished systems. Outcome measures included reference values for physiological parameters including respiratory rate a

Methods for genotyping verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli.

Verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) is annually incriminated in more than 100,000 cases of enteric foodborne human disease and in losses amounting to $US 2.5 billion every year. A number of genotyping methods have been developed to track VTEC infections and determine diversity and evolutionary relationships among these microorganisms. These methods have facilitated monitoring and surveillance of foodborne VTEC outbreaks and early identification of outbreaks or clusters of outbreaks. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) has been used extensively to track and differentiate VTEC becaus

Prediction of Running Anteroposterior Ground Reaction Force From the Vertical Component Through a Deep Learning Approach.

Studying ground reaction force (GRF) is essential for in situ running analysis, as they provide critical insights into both performance optimization and the etiology of running-related injuries. However, the use of current measurement systems in ecological or field conditions remains limited: their restricted measurement areas constrain data collection to only a few steps, and their high cost hinders widespread adoption. Recently, a size-adjustable instrumented track has been developed to measure the vertical component of GRF outside the laboratory environment. Building on this advancement, th

Will changes in phenology track climate change? A study of growth initiation timing in coast Douglas-fir.

Under climate change, the reduction of frost risk, onset of warm temperatures and depletion of soil moisture are all likely to occur earlier in the year in many temperate regions. The resilience of tree species will depend on their ability to track these changes in climate with shifts in phenology that lead to earlier growth initiation in the spring. Exposure to warm temperatures ('forcing') typically triggers growth initiation, but many trees also require exposure to cool temperatures ('chilling') while dormant to readily initiate growth in the spring. If warming increases forcing and decreas

Characterization of Ultrasound Probe-Dependent Interference in Electromagnetic Tracking for Image-Guided Procedures.

Ultrasound (US) imaging is widely used to guide minimally invasive procedures such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), while electromagnetic (EM) tracking can complement US guidance by providing line-of-sight-independent instrument localization. However, US probes may distort the EM tracking field in a probe-dependent manner. This study characterized probe-induced EM interference for a conventional 3D/4D phased-array probe and a handheld wireless probe. Three experiments were conducted using an EM tracking system: spatial mapping of interference along each probe body, assessment of probe-s

The Use of Eye-tracking Technology in Cleft Lip: A Literature Review.

UNLABELLED: Eye-tracking has become an increasingly popular research tool within the field of cleft lip and/or palate (CL+/-P). Despite this, there are no standardized protocols for conducting research. Our objective was to conduct a literature review of the methodology and outcomes of previous publications using eye-tracking in CL+/-P. METHODS: The PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane databases were searched to identify all articles published up to August 2022. All articles were screened by two independent reviewers. Inclusion criteria included using eye-tracking, image stimuli of CL+/-P, an

Vision-Based Tracking of Surgical Motion During Live Open-Heart Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Motion tracking during live surgeries may be used to assess surgeons' intra-operative performance, provide feedback, and predict outcome. Current assessment protocols rely on human observations, controlled laboratory settings, or tracking technologies not suitable for live operating theatres. In this study, a novel method for motion tracking of live open-heart surgery was developed, and evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three-D-printed 'tracking die' with miniature markers were fitted to DeBakey forceps. The surgical field was recorded with a video camera mounted above the operati

Trajectory data of antero- and retrograde movement of mitochondria in living zebrafish larvae.

Recently, a large number of single particle tracking (SPT) approaches have been developed. Generally, SPT techniques can be split into two groups: ex post facto approaches where trajectory extraction is carried out after data acquisition and feedback based approaches that perform particle tracking in real time [1]. One feedback approach is 3D Orbital Tracking, where the laser excitation beam is rotated in a circle about the object, generating a so called orbit [2,3]. By calculating the particle position from the detected intensity after every orbit in relation to its center, this method allows

Visual pursuit behavior in mice maintains the pursued prey on the retinal region with least optic flow.

Mice have a large visual field that is constantly stabilized by vestibular ocular reflex (VOR) driven eye rotations that counter head-rotations. While maintaining their extensive visual coverage is advantageous for predator detection, mice also track and capture prey using vision. However, in the freely moving animal quantifying object location in the field of view is challenging. Here, we developed a method to digitally reconstruct and quantify the visual scene of freely moving mice performing a visually based prey capture task. By isolating the visual sense and combining a mouse eye optic mo
