Air pollution in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, assessed by plant comet assay.

Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) is among the European countries with the highest rate of air pollution-related death cases and the poorest air quality. The main causes are solid fuel consumption, traffic, and the poorly developed or implemented air pollution reduction policies. In addition, the city of Sarajevo, the capital of B&H, suffers temperature inversion episodes in autumn/winter months, which sustain air pollution. Human biomonitoring studies may be confounded by the lifestyle of subjects or possible metabolic alterations. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate Ligustrum vulgare L. as a

Particulate matter pollution at traffic hotspots of Accra, Ghana: levels, exposure experiences of street traders, and associated respiratory and cardiovascular symptoms.

BACKGROUND: There are limited studies on the health effects of street trading in spite of common knowledge that individuals engaged in the trade are exposed to high levels of traffic-related air pollution per their mode of operation, and also the fact that the venture is a dominant occupation in cities of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and other developing regions. OBJECTIVE: We characterized particulate matter (PM) pollution levels at traffic hotspots of Accra, Ghana during the dry and wet seasons, and assessed exposure experiences of street traders. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted

Traffic-related air toxics and preterm birth: a population-based case-control study in Los Angeles County, California.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have associated air pollutant exposures with adverse birth outcomes, but there is still relatively little information to attribute effects to specific emission sources or air toxics. We used three exposure data sources to examine risks of preterm birth in Los Angeles women when exposed to high levels of traffic-related air pollutants--including specific toxics--during pregnancy. METHODS: We identified births during 6/1/04-3/31/06 to women residing within five miles of a Southern California Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Multiple Air Toxics Exposure Study

Asthma incidence in children growing up close to traffic: a registry-based birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Recent reviews conclude an association between traffic-related pollution and incidence of asthma in children, but not all studies agree. Studies have almost exclusively relied on parental-reported symptoms or parental-reported diagnoses of asthma and wheeze. Our aim was to investigate if traffic exposure is associated with higher incidence of early onset asthma, using registry-based outcome data. METHODS: We investigated a birth cohort in southern Sweden, consisting of N = 26,128 children with outcome and exposure data (born July 2005-2010). Of these children, N = 7898 had additio…

Neurotoxicants are in the air: convergence of human, animal, and in vitro studies on the effects of air pollution on the brain.

In addition to increased morbidity and mortality caused by respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, air pollution may also negatively affect the brain and contribute to central nervous system diseases. Air pollution is a mixture comprised of several components, of which ultrafine particulate matter (UFPM; <100 nm) is of much concern, as these particles can enter the circulation and distribute to most organs, including the brain. A major constituent of ambient UFPM is represented by traffic-related air pollution, mostly ascribed to diesel exhaust (DE). Human epidemiological studies and controll

Short-Term Cumulative Exposure to Ambient Traffic-Related Black Carbon and Blood Pressure: MMDA Traffic Enforcers' Health Study.

Exposure to traffic-related air pollution is linked with acute alterations in blood pressure (BP). We examined the cumulative short-term effect of black carbon (BC) exposure on systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) BP and assessed effect modification by participant characteristics. SBP and DBP were repeatedly measured on 152 traffic enforcers. Using a linear mixed-effects model with random intercepts, quadratic (QCDL) and cubic (CCDL) constrained distributed lag models were fitted to estimate the cumulative effect of BC concentration on SBP and DBP during the 10 hours (daily exposure) and 7 days

Outdoor air pollution, exhaled 8-isoprostane and current asthma in adults: the EGEA study.

Associations between outdoor air pollution and asthma in adults are still scarce, and the underlying biological mechanisms are poorly understood. Our aim was to study the associations between 1) long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution and current asthma, 2) exhaled 8-isoprostane (8-iso; a biomarker related to oxidative stress) and current asthma, and 3) outdoor air pollution and exhaled 8-iso.Cross-sectional analyses were conducted in 608 adults (39% with current asthma) from the first follow-up of the French case-control and family study on asthma (EGEA; the Epidemiological study of the G

Residential Proximity to Roadways and Ischemic Placental Disease in a Cape Cod Family Health Study.

Exposure to air pollution may adversely impact placental function through a variety of mechanisms; however, epidemiologic studies have found mixed results. We examined the association between traffic exposure and placental-related obstetric conditions in a retrospective cohort study on Cape Cod, MA, USA. We assessed exposure to traffic using proximity metrics (distance of residence to major roadways and length of major roadways within a buffer around the residence). The outcomes included self-reported ischemic placental disease (the presence of at least one of the following conditions: preecla

Personal exposure to ultrafine particles and oxidative DNA damage.

Exposure to ultrafine particles (UFPs) from vehicle exhaust has been related to risk of cardiovascular and pulmonary disease and cancer, even though exposure assessment is difficult. We studied personal exposure in terms of number concentrations of UFPs in the breathing zone, using portable instruments in six 18-hr periods in 15 healthy nonsmoking subjects. Exposure contrasts of outdoor pollution were achieved by bicycling in traffic for 5 days and in the laboratory for 1 day. Oxidative DNA damage was assessed as strand breaks and oxidized purines in mononuclear cells isolated from venous bloo

Trait anxiety and modeled exposure as determinants of self-reported annoyance to sound, air pollution and other environmental factors in the home.

OBJECTIVES: We examined to what degree annoyance ratings to noise, air pollution and other common environmental factors in the home environment could be considered to mirror personality disposition in terms of habitual anxiety level and, when appropriate, objectively modeled noise and nitrogen emission (NOx). METHODS: A trait anxiety scale was introduced in a cross-sectional public health survey with 2,856 respondents. Of these, 705 had self-reported asthma and the rest constituted gender-matched referents. Annoyance to ten specific factors in the residential environment, mainly focusing on s

The effects of air and transportation noise pollution-related altered blood gene expression, DNA methylation, and protein abundance levels on gastrointestinal diseases risk.

INTRODUCTION: Air pollution and transportation noise pollution has been linked to gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, but their relationship remains unclear. METHODS: We extracted the significantly modulated genes and CpG sites related to air pollution (PM2.5, PM10, and NOx) and transportation noise pollution (aircraft, railway, and traffic road noise) from previous published studies. Genome-wide methylation analysis and colocalization analysis with these CpG sites and GWAS data of GI diseases were performed to disentangle the relationship between pollution-related blood DNA methylation (DNAm) al

Outdoor Air Pollution and New-Onset Airway Disease. An Official American Thoracic Society Workshop Report.

Although it is well accepted that air pollution exposure exacerbates preexisting airway disease, it has not been firmly established that long-term pollution exposure increases the risk of new-onset asthma or chronic obstruction pulmonary disease (COPD). This Workshop brought together experts on mechanistic, epidemiological, and clinical aspects of airway disease to review current knowledge regarding whether air pollution is a causal factor in the development of asthma and/or COPD. Speakers presented recent evidence in their respective areas of expertise related to air pollution and new airway

Carbon and hemosiderin-laden macrophages in sputum of traffic policeman exposed to air pollution.

In this study, we evaluated (a) quantitative modifications of dust cells and siderocytes and (b) qualitative modifications (i.e., cellular changes and inflammatory infiltrate) in sputum of 164 traffic policemen occupationally exposed to environmental pollution in an urban area. Such modifications were correlated with time of exposure and smoking habits. Seventy-three (45%) of the policemen were smokers, and a control group of 119 nonexposed individuals (24% smokers) who resided in a rural district near Perugia, Italy, were examined. The sputa, which was collected for 3 d, were smeared on glass

Childhood Exposure to Air Pollution, Body Mass Index Trajectories, and Insulin Resistance Among Young Adults.

IMPORTANCE: Emerging evidence suggests that exposure to air pollution affects children's glucose metabolism. However, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether body mass index (BMI; calculated as the weight in kilograms divided by the height in meters squared) growth trajectories mediate the association between traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) and insulin resistance. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: As part of the Southern California Children's Health Study, the ongoing Meta-Air2 cohort substudy followed up participants from pregnancy to 24 y

Untargeted serum metabolomics and air pollution in Parkinson's disease.

Mechanisms linking air pollution to Parkinson's disease (PD) remain poorly understood despite consistent toxicological and epidemiological evidence. We investigated metabolic disturbances associated with air pollution in PD using untargeted metabolomics. Serum samples were collected from 616 PD patients and 271 controls residing in central California, a region with high air pollution. Exposures to particulate matter (PM2.5), carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide were estimated for the 1-, 3-, and 5-year periods prior to serum collection using residential addresses and three modeling approaches

Investigation of air pollution and noise on progression of thoracic aortic calcification: results of the Heinz Nixdorf Recall Study.

AIMS: Air pollution and noise are potential risk factors for subclinical atherosclerosis. Longitudinal analyses, especially on the interplay of these environmental factors, are scarce and inconsistent. Hence we investigated long-term traffic-related exposure to air pollution and noise with the development and progression of thoracic aortic calcification, a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis. METHODS: We used baseline (2000-2003) and follow-up (2006-2008) data from the German Heinz Nixdorf Recall cohort study, including 4814 middle-aged adults. Residence-based air pollution (PM2.5 (aerodyna
