A preliminary study of the thermal strain experienced by dive support boat personnel.

Anecdotal evidence indicated some British military dive support boat personnel suffer from uncomfortably cold hands and feet, which could impair their performance and be associated with reductions in core body temperature. This study collected preliminary data on thermal stress and cognitive performance of personnel taking part in a cold-weather training exercise. Six men were monitored during four boat transits in a range of climatic conditions (air temperature +1.2°C to -10.5°C, wind chill -4.5°C to 19.3°C). Core body temperature was measured with a radio pill and 12 skin sites (ISO 9886 plu

Long N-acyl fatty acids on sphingolipids are responsible for miscibility with phospholipids to form liquid-ordered phase.

The structure and thermotropic phase behaviour of aqueous dispersions of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine and glucosylceramide rich in C-24 fatty acyl residues was investigated by synchrotron X-ray diffraction methods. Binary mixtures comprised of molar ratios 2.5:100, 6.5:100, 12.6:100, 25:100, 40:100 and 50:100, glucolipid:phospholipid were examined in heating and cooling scans of 2 degrees /min between 25 and 85 degrees C. Small-angle reflections indicated coexisting lamellar structures over the entire temperature range investigated. Reversible thermotropic changes were observed in one lamell

Weather patterns forecast the severity of cervical spinal cord injuries.

To determine if regional weather patterns could predict the severity of cervical spinal cord injuries (CSCI) across the United States. Non-elective CSCI patients from 2015 to 2020 were identified in the National Inpatient Sample. Linear mixed-effects models explored associations between CSCI features and weather patterns, with random effects for hospitals. Granger causality tests were performed for each region to assess if weather could predict complete CSCI. Cross-correlation analyses examined temporal trends. Logistic mixed-effects models evaluated correlations between CSCI severity and seas

Heat-Moderating Effects of Bus Stop Shelters and Tree Shade on Public Transport Ridership.

Rising temperatures threaten the resilience of public transit systems. We determined whether bus stop shelters and tree canopy surrounding bus stops moderated the effect of warm season temperatures on ridership in Austin, Texas, and whether shelters and trees were equitably distributed. For bus stops (n = 2271) of Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority, boardings per bus were measured 1 April-30 September 2019. Air temperature data originated from the Camp Mabry weather station. Tree canopy was calculated by classification of high-resolution aerial imagery from the National Agriculture

At higher temperatures, but below the glass transition temperature, a local mode process makes significant contributions. Above the glass transition temperature, increased rates of molecular tumbling modulate nuclear hyperfine and g anisotropy. The contribution from spin rotation is very small. Relaxation rates at …

Physical properties and stability of filled hydrogel particles based on biopolymer phase separation: Influence of the ratio of protein to polysaccharide.

Filled hydrogel particles can be fabricated by incorporating an oil-in-water emulsion into portions of separated incompatible lower and upper phases together and remixing with later acidification to pH 5.0. The purpose of present study was to investigate the influence of different heat-denatured whey protein concentrates (HWPC)/high methoxy pectin (HMP) mass ratios (1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, and 5:1) of phase separated systems on the physical characteristics and stabilities of filled hydrogel particles. The results showed that the particle size of filled hydrogel particles significantly decreased wi

The effect of increasing temperature on skin blood flow and red cell deformability.

Using laser Doppler techniques in nine healthy volunteers, we contrasted the effect of increasing local skin temperature at the elbow, a skin site with nutritive microvasculature, and the finger pulp, with predominantly arteriovenous anastomic (AVA) perfusion). We also assessed flow at the finger dorsum, with contributions of both types of microvasculature. In parallel with the laser Doppler studies, we determined the effect of increasing temperature on the red cell deformability of our subjects, using the new technique of Cell Transit Time Analysis (CTTA). Thermal stimulation produced very la

Solid-State Hydrogen-Bond Alterations in a [Co2 Fe2 ] Complex with Bifunctional Hydrogen-Bonding Donors.

A hydrogen-bonding donor-acceptor system, [Co2 Fe2 (bpy*)4 (CN)6 (tp*)2 ](PF6 )2 ⋅2ABA⋅4BN⋅2PE (1 solv ), was prepared by co-crystallization of an external stimuli-responsive cyanide-bridged tetranuclear [Co2 Fe2 ] complex and bifunctional hydrogen-bonding donors, p-aminobenzoic acid. Compound 1 solv exhibited a gradual electron-transfer-coupled spin transition (ETCST), and the removal of solvent molecules led to an abrupt thermal ETCST behavior with increased transition temperature. X-ray structural analysis revealed that the modification of ETCST was caused by a significant alteration of a h…

Graft Transit Time Has No Effect on Outcome of Unrelated Donor Hematopoietic Cell Transplants Performed in Australia and New Zealand: A Study from the Australasian Bone Marrow Transplant Recipient Registry.

A previous study found that platelet recovery and mortality were worse in recipients of myeloablative bone marrow transplants where graft transit times were longer than 20 hours. This retrospective study of unrelated myeloablative allogeneic transplantation performed within Australia and New Zealand analyzed transplant outcomes according to graft transit times. Of 233 assessable cases, 76 grafts (33%) were sourced from bone marrow (BM) and 157 (67%) from peripheral blood. Grafts sourced from Australia and New Zealand (47% of total) were associated with a median transit time of 6 hours versus 3

The Coexistence of Superconductivity and Topological Order in Van der Waals InNbS2.

The research on systems with coexistence of superconductivity and nontrivial band topology has attracted widespread attention. However, the … ization susceptibility and electrical transport show that InNbS2 is a type-II superconductor with a transition temperature Tc of 6 K. First-principles calculations predict multiple topological nodal ring states close to the Fermi level in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Similar features are also observed in the as-synthesized BiNbS2 and PbNbS2 samples. This work pr …

Temperature Dependence on Tensile Mechanical Properties of Sintered Silver Film.

This paper investigates the influence of temperature on tensile mechanical properties of sintered silver (s-Ag) films with 8-10 μm in thickness for fundamental reliability design of semiconductor systems. The s-Ag film sintered under a pressure of 60 MPa possesses the porosity (p) around 5% determined from cross-sectional scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. The stress-strain (S-S) curves of s-Ag and pure silver (p-Ag) films are obtained using originally designed uniaxial tensile tester at temperatures from 25 °C to 150 °C. The S-S curves of p-Ag indicate ductile behavior irrespective of

Pretransitional behaviour in the vicinity of the isotropic-nematic transition of strongly polar compounds.

The isotropic-nematic transition, being weakly first order, exhibits pretransitional effects signifying the appearance of the nematic-like regions in the isotropic phase. In the isotropic phase, strongly polar liquid crystals, such as the popular alkyl and alkoxy cyano biphenyl behave in a non-standard fashion: whereas far away from the transition the dielectric constant ε(iso) has a 1/T dependence (a feature also commonly seen in polar liquids), on approaching the nematic phase the trend reverses resulting in a maximum in ε(iso), at a temperature slightly above the transition, an effect expla

Concomitant Thermochromic and Phase-Change Effect in a Switchable Spin Crossover Material for Efficient Passive Control of Day and Night Temperature Fluctuations.

The increasing environmental protection demand has prompted the development of passive thermal regulation systems that reduce temperature fluctuations in buildings. Here, it is demonstrated that the heat generated by the sun can trigger a spin crossover (SCO) in a molecule-base material, resulting in a concomitant color variation (from pink to white) and a phase transition. This leads to a cooling effect with respect to other thermochromic materials. In addition, when the material is cooled, a dampening of the temperature decrease is produced. Therefore, these materials can potentially be impl

Curvature in infectious disease network: A metric for vaccination and control.

We investigate the geometric structure of evolving infectious-disease networks using a notion of node curvature, which is based on the heat-kernel expansion that naturally extends to edges. Applying this measure to networks reconstructed from infection counts whose degree and strength distributions transition toward a steady power-law, we observe a corresponding transition in curvature. We relate the latter to an underlying hyperbolic space and reveal a phase transition in the network's effective temperature. We further compare our curvature measure with existing definitions in the literature,

A Dynamically Induced Phase Transition in Na4P2S6─Ultrafast Na+ Mobility Triggering Rotor Phase Formation.

The physical properties of any crystalline solid, such as the irregular movement of ions or atoms, are closely linked to its structure. Changes in local structure or local defect chemistry are typically attributed to changes in ion hopping. Conversely, one might also ask whether fast ionic diffusion can cause structural changes, finally initiating an overall phase transition. By using high-resolution 23Na and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) carried out at temperatures as high as 650 °C, we show that changes of the local Na+ environment in the Na+-conducting model compound Na4P2S6 indeed p

Competing mechanisms toughen bcc binary and medium-entropy alloys at 20 K.

Plastic deformation in body-centred cubic (bcc) metals and alloys is conventionally mediated by screw dislocations. Their temperature-sensitive motion is attributed to a steep rise in strength with decreasing temperature that constricts plastic zones at crack tips, leading to a ductile-to-brittle transition1. Here we evaluated the mechanical properties of group IV-V bcc refractory alloys with similar electronic structures at 20 K and found that these materials instead exhibit a plateau in tensile yield strength and fracture toughness as a function of temperature, with no apparent ductile-to-br

Comparative efficacy of free and PNAGA-encapsulated antimalarial drugs: temperature-dependent modulation of Plasmodium falciparum growth.

INTRODUCTION: Poly(N-acryloyl glycinamide) (PNAGA) was evaluated as a temperature-responsive carrier for antimalarial drugs. METHODS: PNAGA was synthesized and characterized by DSC and TGA, and its sol-gel transition was determined by the reverse test-tube method. Encapsulation efficiency (EE%) of mefloquine hydrochloride and pyrimethamine in PNAGA was determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, using dialysis to separate free from encapsulated drug and calibration curves at each drug's characteristic absorbance maximum (284 nm for mefloquine hydrochloride, 272 nm for pyrimethamine). Free drugs a
