Anthrax, caused by the Gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis, is rarely seen in industrialized nations but is common in developing countries. Clinical, electromyographic, and pathologic findings characteristic of lead toxicosis were detected in a turkey vulture (Cathartes aura). The bird had generalized lower motor neuron dysfunction that progressed over 5 days. Electromyography revealed diffuse denervation potentials and a presumed decrement in the sciatic-tibial nerve conduction velocity. In this study, 6,381 primary school boys were examined in Turkey in the years 1990 and 1991 and families and medical personnel were questioned about the information they had on undescended testes and their behavior regarding this matter was noted. Undescended testes were found in 91/6,381 pupils (1.43%) Forty-six families (58.7%) were aware of the abnormality. In 36 of these 46 cases (78%), the mother was the first who noticed the problem. OBJECTIVE: To highlight recent trends in maternal mortality in Hacettepe University Hospital.
METHOD: A retrospective clinical analysis of 117 maternal deaths between 1968 and 1992.
RESULTS: The overall maternal mortality ratio was 180/100,000 (108/59,993). In terms of 5-year periods, the maternal mortality ratio declined from 417.7 in 1968-72 to 73.7 in 1988-92. Infection was the most common cause of death (59.8%), followed by cardiac disease (8.5%) and hemorrhage (8.5%). Recent studies have been aimed at determining how gastroduodenal contractions are initiated and at regulation of the stomach during the intestinal phase of gastric regulation. The site of digestion and absorption of protein was examined in chicks fed soybean meal and casein and in turkeys fed soybean meal, using 91YCl3 as a non-absorbed reference substance.
