PURPOSE: To evaluate the long term outcomes of permanent Memotherm urethral stent in the treatment of recurrent bulbar urethral stricture.

Posterior urethral stenosis can result from radical prostatectomy in approximately 5%-10% of patients (range 1.4%-29%). Similarly, 4%-9% of men after brachytherapy and 1%-13% after external beam radiotherapy will develop stenosis. The rate will be greater after combination therapy and can exceed 40% after salvage radical prostatectomy. BACKGROUND: While several treatment options are available for pediatric urethral strictures, the appropriate treatment must be based on several factors. Following failed endoscopic intervention, the most cost-effective strategy for recurrent urethral stricture disease (USD) is urethroplasty. Inpatient hospital costs associated with urethroplasty are driven by patient comorbidities and postoperative complications. Symptom-based surveillance for USD recurrence will reduce unnecessary diagnostic procedures and cost.
