Ray sum image: its efficacy in renal tract calculus detection.

AIM: To determine the efficacy of a ray sum image derived from computed tomography of the kidneys, ureters and bladder (CT KUB) in detecting renal tract calculi and whether this can replace the baseline abdominal radiograph (AXR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study performed at a tertiary referral centre examining adult patients referred for urolithiasis who had undergone AXR within 24 hours of the diagnostic CT KUB. AXR and ray sum image for calculus visibility were reviewed blindly by two readers. Anteroposterior thickness of the patient, presence of excess gas/faecal mate

Calcified clumped neodymium magnetic spheres as an intravesical foreign body: case report and literature review.

Foreign bodies in the bladder can occur by self-insertion, and patients often hide the symptoms owing to embarrassment. The foreign bodies act as a nidus for calculus formation when not detected for a long time. Foreign bodies can declare symptoms such as frequency, dysuria, nocturia, hematuria, urethrorrhagia, obstruction, or retention. This case spotlights self-inserted intravesical neodymium magnetic spheres clumped and calcified due to delayed presentation which were removed by open cystotomy after a cystoscopic failure.

Intrauterine device migration into the bladder leading to stones formation.

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a popular method of contraception mainly used in developing countries. Perforation is one of the most serious but a rare complication secondary to the insertion of an IUD, while perforation into the intravesical organs such as the bladder is even more rare. A 30-year-old multipara in early 30s, with two previous caesarean sections (CS) and one curettage, was found to have her IUD puncturing the bladder during a cystoscopy procedure to remove her bladder stones. Transvesical migration of an IUD is an uncommon complication with a high rate of calculi formation, wh

Bladder outlet obstruction in male cystinuria mice.

BACKGROUND: Cystinuria is the most common inherited cause of urinary tract stones in children. It can lead to obstructive uropathy, which is a major cause of renal failure. Genetic studies have identified two genes, SLC3A1 and SLC7A9, to be directly involved in cystine stone formation. Slc3a1 knockout male mice develop cystine stones in the bladder and, to a lesser extent, in the kidney. Slc3a1 knockout female mice also develop cystinuria, but they do not form stones. The specific aim of this study was to characterize bladder function in cystinuria mice. METHODS: Eight control (4 male, 4 fema

Intravesical migration of intrauterine device resulting in stone formation.

The intrauterine contraceptive device has been in use for many years, and migration of the device from the uterus to the pelvic cavity has been reported by many investigators. Although perforation of the uterus by an intrauterine contraceptive device is not uncommon, intravesical migration and secondary stone formation are rare complications. We report on a 27-year-old woman in whom an intrauterine contraceptive device (Copper-T) migrated from the uterus to the bladder and resulted in formation of a stone.

Bladder stone: a complication of intravesical migration of Lippes loop.

We report on a woman in whom an intrauterine contraceptive device (Lippes loop) migrated from the uterus to the bladder with formation of a calculus. Eight years elapsed between intrauterine insertion of the device and its retrieval with the calculus from the bladder.

[Pseudo-ureterocele].

The authors describe nine cases of pseudo-ureterocele secondary to various obstructive lesions: bladder tumors, stones in the ureteral meatus, tuberculosis of the bladder. Certain radiological signs, such as asymmetrical swelling of the terminal ureter and the thick halo which surrounds the dilatation, can sometimes distinguish pseudo-ureteroceles from idiopathic ureteroceles, and associated radiological anomalies in the bladder are also of greater value for differentiation.

Urological situation five years after spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate bladder emptying methods and urinary tract problems five years after spinal cord injury (SCI). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Neurological level, method of bladder emptying and urological investigations were retrieved from the records for all 165 patients admitted to our Centre for Spinal Cord Injured with a traumatic SCI sustained from 1984 to 1988. RESULTS: A total of 77 patients with completed 5-year control were included in the final analyses. We found that 64% had suprasacral bladder dysfunction, while 23% had infrasacral bladder dysfunction. Plasma-creatinine was normal,

A unique presentation, and management, of acute urinary retention in a young boy with underlying vesicoureteral reflux.

Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) affects ∼1% of children. We present an unusual case of urinary retention secondary to an obstructing urethral stone, underlying reflux, and its management. A 7-year-old boy presenting with acute urinary retention had a palpable penile shaft swelling and patent urethral meatus on examination. Cysto-urethroscopy with a 6.6Fr ureteroscope, due to unavailability of paediatric instruments, revealed an obstructing calculus impacted in the navicular fossa. This was laser fragmented and extracted. Cystoscopy revealed multiple bladder calculi with a patulous right ureteric o

Long-term ultrasound insights into camelid urology: a retrospective analysis of urinary tract disorders in 1,100 dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) (2012-2025).

INTRODUCTION: Urinary tract disorders are common in dromedary camels and present diagnostic challenges due to non-specific clinical signs and limited field diagnostic tools. Ultrasonography is a valuable, non-invasive modality for evaluating renal and lower urinary tract abnormalities. This long-term retrospective study aimed to describe the ultrasonographic findings associated with urinary tract disorders in dromedary camels and to assess the diagnostic utility of ultrasonography as a primary imaging modality. METHODS: Records of 1,100 camels (3 months-20 years) examined between 2012 and 202

Intermittent bladder urinary retention in a young woman. An unusual presentation of partial urethral duplication.

A singular case of female accessory urethra associated to a mobile bladder stone with an unusual clinical presentation is reported. The role of perineal ultrasound is emphasized as a useful diagnostic tool to study female urethra in a static and dynamic setting, including cases of partial or complete urethral duplication.

Urinary obstruction in azotemic patients: detection by sonography.

Renal sonography is frequently requested in patients with an elevated or rising creatinine, often with the instruction to "rule out obstruction." A prospective study of patients undergoing renal sonography for newly discovered azotemia (creatinine greater than 1.8 mg/dl) or worsening renal failure was undertaken to evaluate the clinical utility of the sonographic examination. Patients with known obstructive uropathy, renal calculi, renal mass, or hematuria were excluded. In 189 patients, 17 (9%) had hydronephrosis: 11 unilateral (one with a solitary kidney) and six bilateral. Obstructive cause

Urinary considerations for adult patients with spinal dysraphism.

The incidence of newborns with spinal dysraphism is diminishing worldwide, although survival of individuals with this condition into adulthood continues to improve. The number of adults with spinal dysraphism will, therefore, increase in the coming years, which will pose new challenges in patient management. Urological manifestations of spinal dysraphism can include increased risks of urinary incontinence, urinary tract infection, urinary calculi, sexual dysfunction, end-stage renal disease and iatrogenic metabolic disturbances; however, the severity and incidence of these symptoms varies subs
