Urethral catheterization of the female rat.

Urinary tract catheterization of the rat may be required for a variety of clinical and experimental reasons. The external urinary orifice is easily visualized and rests anterior to the vaginal opening, making urinary tract catheterization easier in the female rat than in other species. This column describes a technique for short-term urethral catheterization in the adult female rat.

[Residual urine after intermittent catheterization in patients with spinal cord injuries].

Residual urine following catheterization was studied using ultrasonography (Ultramark II Scientific Medical System) in 12 patients with spinal cord injury, for an average of four months (range 3-7 months) after time of injury. All patients were examined three times. Urinary tract infections were also registered, and the functional type of the urinary bladder was identified by cystometric examination. Ultrasonography showed residual urine volumes after 25 of a total of 36 catheterizations (70%). In seven of these catheterizations the residual urine volume exceeded 50 ml, and in two cases was mo

Urinary bladder perforation in a premature infant with Down syndrome.

Urinary bladder perforation due to bladder catheterization in neonates is a rare iatrogenic complication. It has been reported secondary to various causes and a variety of surgical settings in neonates. A case of urinary bladder perforation due to catheterization in a premature baby with Down syndrome, who presented with progressive renal failure and mild-to-moderate ascites, is reported. Urinary bladder perforation should be considered in a case of neonatal ascites with renal failure, which is unexplainable by other causes. We recommend that bladder catheterization in a baby with Down syndrom

[Method for transurethral catheterization for 1-3 days for pelvic floor relaxation in the postoperative period].

This clinic trial, randomized and blinded was done to determine efficient whether reducing transurethral Foley catheterization from 3 days to 1 would lead to fewer urinary (UTI) tract infections without retention becoming a problem. Fifty women undergoing vaginal plastic repair to either 1 or 3 days catheterization. Of 25 patients catheterized for both group postoperative urinary retention occurred in 2 (8%) and required a new catheter. Of 25 patients catheterized for 1 day UTI was diagnosed in 1 (4%) and in 5(20) of those catheterized for 3 days, mean postoperative stay was 2 day for patients

Reducing the risk of catheter-related urinary tract infection.

Primum non nocere (first do no harm) is the ancient Latin phrase that reminds nurses that first principle of healthcare is not to harm those entrusted to our care. Yet, common healthcare interventions, such as urinary catheterization, have the potential to do patients great harm. The patient may even pay with his or her life if a urinary catheter is inserted without clinical indications or if the nurse fails to do his or her utmost to protect the patient from infection. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common of healthcare-related infection. UTI in hospital inpatients normally occurs

Avoiding the pitfalls and perils of catheter care.

Twelve per cent of hospital inpatients and 4% of community patients have an indwelling urinary catheter. Urinary catheterization increases morbidity threefold. The main hazards of catheterization are tissue damage, bladder damage, infection, encrustation and blockage. Obtaining informed consent before catheterization is extremely important. Restricting catheterization to those who clinically require this invasive procedure can reduce the number of people who are exposed to the hazards of catheterization. The use of silver-coated catheters can reduce the risk of infection and encrustation. Ensu

[Prevalence of the use of urinary drainage systems in Spanish hospitals].

BACKGROUND: Urinary catheterization constitutes the main risk factor in urinary infections or nosocomial origin. The use of closed urinary drainage systems is fundamental to decrease this risk. The prevalence of the use of a urethral catheter as well as the proportion of closed type drainage systems in the Spanish medium was studied with the aim of improving the degree of the adoption of control measures for this type of infections. METHODS: The prevalence of patients submitted to urinary catheterization (distinguishing between open and closed systems) in an important sample of Spanish hospit

[Reducing urinary catheter use in patients hospitalized in internal medicine departments].

Clinical utility exists in certain situations for introducing a urinary catheter, but its use is the major cause of in-hospitaL acquired urinary tract infections. Furthermore, there are other complications of urinary catheterization, including urethral injury, macroscopic hematuria, and the inability to remove the catheter once introduced. Also, the in-hospital use of an indwelling urinary catheter in the elderly patient is associated with prolonged hospitalizations and an increased risk of in-hospital mortality. Although there are clinical criteria for the use of an indwelling urinary cathete

Fascial sling correction of kinked efferent limb in patients with continent diversion and catheterization difficulty.

PURPOSE: We determined the efficacy of using a rectus fascial sling to revise an angulated efferent limb in patients with continent urinary diversion and difficulty with intermittent catheterization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two spinal cord injured women who underwent modified Indiana pouch urinary diversion required revision of each efferent limb because of difficulty with catheterization. A strip section of anterior rectus sheath was harvested and used to fix the efferent limb in position, assuring freedom from angulation and facilitating catheterization. RESULTS: Both patients remained cont

Why catheterize the bladder for laparoscopic cholecystectomy?

Bladder catheterization is widely employed for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Fifty consecutive laparoscopic cholecystectomies were performed without bladder catheterization. Patients were asked to void shortly before induction of anesthesia to ensure that the bladder was empty. Postoperative bladder catheterization for urinary retention was required in 3 of the 50 patients. Routine bladder catheterization for laparoscopic cholecystectomy is unnecessary, and its elimination will reduce costs, urethral trauma, and nosocomial urinary tract infections.
