Chenopodium album Linn. leaves prevent ethylene glycol-induced urolithiasis in rats.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The leaves of Chenopodium album Linn. are traditionally used for correction of kidney diseases and urinary stones. The present work investigated the effect of methanolic and aqueous extracts of leaves of Chenopodium album on experimentally-induced urolithiasis in rats to substantiate its traditional use as antilithiatic agent. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The leaf extract was standardized by HPLC. Urolithiasis was induced in rats by administration of 0.75% v/v of ethylene glycol (EG) in distilled water and in addition, vehicle or methanol (CAME) or aqueous (CAAE) ext

Medical expulsive therapy for pediatric urolithiasis: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Kidney stone disease has become more common among children and young adults. Despite its well-documented success in adults, published success rates of medical expulsive therapy (MET) for pediatric urolithiasis vary widely. Our objective was to determine whether the aggregated evidence supports the use of MET in children. METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, clinicaltrials.gov, MEDLINE, and EMBASE databases, and recently presented meeting abstracts for reports in any language. In addition, the bibliographies of included studies were then hand-searched. The p

Simultaneous vs staged treatment of urolithiasis in patients undergoing radical prostatectomy.

AIM: To assess the outcomes of men treated for urolithiasis at the time of radical prostatectomy. METHODS: From 1991 to 2010, 22 patients were retrospectively identified who were treated simultaneously (n = 10) at radical prostatectomy, or (n = 12) within 120 d prior to prostatectomy, for urolithiasis. Clinical characteristics were reviewed including: type of prostatectomy and stone surgery, location and amount of stone burden, perioperative change in hemoglobin and creatinine, stent frequency, total hospital d, stone-free rates, additional stone procedures and complications. Pediatric urolithiasis--does body mass index influence stone presentation and treatment?

PURPOSE: Pediatric obesity is a major public health concern in the United States. We investigated the association of body mass index with presentation and outcome in children with urolithiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified all patients 2 to 18 years old at our institution with a radiographically confirmed first renal or ureteral stone between January 2003 and June 2008. Data abstracted included demographics, stone characteristics, treatment and metabolic evaluation. Patients were stratified into 3 body mass index categories, including lower (10th percentile or less for age), normal (1

Berberis vulgaris root bark extract prevents hyperoxaluria induced urolithiasis in rats.

Berberis vulgaris is a widely used plant for the treatment of urolithiasis. To evaluate its antiurolithic potential, the crude aqueous-methanol extract of Berberis vulgaris root bark (Bv.Cr) was tested in an animal model of urolithiasis, developed in male Wistar rats by adding 0.75% ethylene glycol in drinking water. Bv.Cr (50 mg/kg) inhibited CaOx crystal deposition in renal tubules and protected against associated changes including polyuria, weight loss, impaired renal function and the development of oxidative stress in kidneys. Activity-guided fractionation revealed the concentration of ant

Urolithiasis after kidney transplantation in pediatric recipients: a single center report.

BACKGROUND: Urolithiasis occurs in approximately 6% of adult kidney transplant (KTx) recipients. Limited data are available on urolithiasis after pediatric KTx. We report the incidence, management of, and risk factors for stone development in children after KTx. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 399 children who received KTx at our center between September 1986 and January 2003. Transplant outcomes were compared in stone formers and controls. RESULTS: Twenty (5%) patients, age 9+/-5 (X +/- SD) years, developed stones over the follow-up period (74+/-53 months). Time to stone present

Urolithiasis associated with experimental lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus inoculation in Lewis rats.

A high frequency of struvite urolithiasis, hydronephrosis, and other urinary tract lesions developed in a group of Lewis rats inoculated intracranially with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV). Initially, clinically ill rats were referred to necropsy: 30 rats over 3 years. These rats had high frequency of urolithiasis (8/30, 27%), hydronephrosis (12/30, 40%), cystitis (9/30, 30%), transitional cell carcinoma (4/30, 13%), and pyelonephritis (19/30, 63%). Lesions were more common in LCMV-inoculated rats. After this trend was noted, all rats on this protocol were necropsied as part of a coh

[Management of endourological technics with upper urinary tract diseases except urolithiasis].

Fifteen patients with stricture of upper urinary tract and 4 patients suspected of having upper tract carcinoma were managed with endourological (percutaneous or transurethral) techniques. The strictures were treated with various dilation catheters and the optical urethrotome. Eleven cases (73.3%) were successfully treated and satisfactory urinary passage was attained. The 4 patients suspected of having upper tract neoplasms were diagnosed accurately with endoscopy, 2 patients had transitional cell carcinoma of renal pelvis and the others had benign ureteral polyps. The endourological techniqu

Cefazolin sodium pentahydrate cause urolithiasis: a case report and literature review.

We report a rare case of urolithiasis induced by cefazolin sodium pentahydrate and review the relevant literature. A 12-year-old girl with right kidney injury was admitted to our hospital, a computed tomography scan revealed that no signs of disease in her left kidney but her right kidney was traumatized severely. After receiving cefazolin sodium pentahydrate, 2.0 g by intravenous infusion daily for 10 days, urolithiasis was found in the left urinary tract by computed tomography scan. Later, the patient complained of left back pain, nausea and vomiting, and a further computed tomography scan s

Ectopic ACTH syndrome complicated by hypercortisolism-associated urolithiasis. A case report.

• Nephrolithiasis is a frequent and underestimated complication of Cushing’s syndrome (CS), prevalence soars up to 50 % in adult patients with active CS, and 25% in cured patients in whom certain abnormalities contribute to stone recurrence. • Ectopic ACTH secretion (EAS) is a less common cause of Cushing syndrome and is seen in 5 to 10% of cases with endogenous hypercortisolemia. Sudden and dramatic onset of CS often suggests an ectopic ACTH-secreting tumor. • There is no information in any urological clinical practice guideline in relation to management of nephrolithiasis in Cushing’s syndro

Antibiotic Utilization Before Endourological Surgery for Urolithiasis: Endourological Society Survey Results.

INTRODUCTION: Ureteroscopy (URS) and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) are common procedures performed to treat kidney stones. Despite advances in technology/technique, serious infectious complications can occur. To better understand the preoperative antibiotic administration patterns and adherence to guidelines from the American Urological Association (AUA) and the European Association of Urology (EAU), members of the Endourological Society were sent a clinical vignette-based survey to assess the antibiotic use in a variety of pre-URS and pre-PCNL scenarios. METHODS: Endourological Society

Association between chronic pancreatitis and urolithiasis: A population-based cohort study.

PURPOSE: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) can cause fat or bile acid malabsorption due to exocrine insufficiency. Fat or bile acid malabsorption has been reported to increase the risk of urolithiasis through increased intestinal oxalate absorption. However, no studies have reported an association between CP and urolithiasis. METHODS: We identified 15,848 patients (age: ≥20 years) diagnosed as having CP between 2000 and 2010 from the National Health Insurance Research Database as the study cohort. Beneficiaries without a history of CP were randomly selected and propensity-matched with the study cohor

Surveillance Bias in Cancer Risk After Unrelated Medical Conditions: Example Urolithiasis.

We analysed cancer risks in patients with urinary tract stones but some features of the generated results alarmed us about possible surveillance bias, which we describe in this report. We used nationwide Swedish hospital records to identify patients with urinary tract stones (N = 211,718) and cancer registration data for cancer patients for years 1987 to 2012. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) for cancer were calculated after the last medical contact for urinary tract stones. All cancers were increased after kidney (SIR 1.54, 95%CI: 1.50-1.58), ureter (1.44, 1.42-1.47), mixed (1.51, 1.44-1.

Assessment of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) Therapeutic Efficiency in Urolithiasis.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) revolutionized the treatment of urolithiasis and gradually became the favorite treatment option so that today it is considered to be the first line of treatment for more than 75% of the patients with urolithiasis. The purpose of this study was the assessment of the therapeutic efficiency, complications and limitations of ESWL in urolithiasis in the initial experience using a third generation electromagnetic lithotripter.  Between 2007 and 2008 we performed ESWL for 167 patients with urolithiasis. We recorded 92 patients with single stone (55.1%) and

Association Between Ambient Temperature and Urolithiasis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The global incidence of urolithiasis has risen in recent decades. Emerging evidence suggests that higher ambient temperatures are linked to an increased risk of kidney-stone-related events, including acute renal colic, likely through physiological mechanisms such as increased urinary calcium excretion and greater supersaturation of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate. This study aims to systematically review existing evidence on the relationship between ambient temperature and urolithiasis risk. RECENT FINDINGS: Of 892 records identified, 46 studies met the inclusion crit

Concurrent pancreatic exocrine hyperplasia and adenomas in a Eurasian otter with pleuropneumonia and urolithiasis.

The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is a semi-aquatic mammal classified as near-threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. There have been few reports on their diseases, especially neoplasms. Here we describe exocrine nodular hyperplasia and adenomas in the pancreas, along with suppurative pleuropneumonia and urolithiasis, in an aged captive Eurasian otter. Pancreatic adenomas are rare in animals, and coexistence of adenoma and nodular hyperplasia in the pancreas has not been reported previously in veterinary medicine, to our knowledge.

Urinary biomarker as a predictor of urolithiasis in children: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Urolithiasis in children has become a clinical concern because of its longterm impact on kidney function and quality of life. In previous studies, the role of urinary biomarkers in predicting the risk of urolithiasis in children was still unclear due to inconsistent findings. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the diagnostic potential of various urinary risk factors in children with urolithiasis. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed based on PRISMA 2020 guidelines, registered in PROSPERO (CRD42025644893). A total of six studies (1 cohort and 5 case-cont
