OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of experimental varicocele (EV) on the ipsilateral testis in rats.
METHODS: EV was induced by partial ligation of the left renal vein in male SD rats, the control rats subjected to sham operation, and the testes of the EV models and controls were extirpated 6, 12, and 18 weeks later. Johnson's score, ultrastructure of seminiferous tubules, intratesticular testosterone concentration (ITC) and germ cell apoptotic index (AI) of each left testis were evaluated.

OBJECTIVE: Inhibin B is secreted by Sertoli cells in response to FSH and is the major feedback regulator of FSH secretion in man. The serum inhibin B level has emerged as a good marker of spermatogenesis and Sertoli cell function. Varicocele has been associated with infertility and disturbed spermatogenesis. Traditionally, right varicoceles have been considered a rare entity nearly always secondary to a neoplastic or retroperitoneal disease. There are other possible etiologies for right varicoceles such as the venous disease of the large veins and visceral malposition syndromes. This paper presents one case report of right varicocele as the only clinical sign of situs inversus. Revision of the literature and nomenclature of these syndromes.

A new therapeutic approach to idiopathic varicocele, promoting restoration of the venous return in a physiological manner is described. Intraoperative internal spermatic venography performed immediately following varicocele ligation in the adolescent has been touted as reducing varicocele persistence rates. A total of 20 male patients 11 to 19 years old had a grade 2 or 3 varicocele and volume loss of the testis ipsilateral to the varicocele. None of these patients presented because of subfertility. Following varicocele ligation a significant increase in volume of the testis ipsilateral to the varicocele was observed in 16 of 20 patients. All 20 patients have been followed for 1 to 6 years. Our results suggest that a moderate to large varicocele can be responsible for testicular growth retardation and that early ligation of the varicocele may reverse this process.
