Vestibular function of patients with profound deafness related to GJB2 mutation.

CONCLUSION: GJB2 mutations are responsible not only for deafness but also for the occurrence of vestibular dysfunction. However, vestibular dysfunction tends to be unilateral and less severe in comparison with that of bilateral deafness. OBJECTIVES: The correlation between the cochlear and vestibular end-organs suggests that some children with congenital deafness may have vestibular impairments. On the other hand, GJB2 gene mutations are the most common cause of nonsyndromic deafness. The vestibular function of patients with congenital deafness (CD), which is related to GJB2 gene mutation, re

[Air conducted ocular VEMP: II. First clinical investigations].

BACKGROUND: Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) are widely used to assess vestibular function. Air conducted (AC) cervical VEMP (cVEMP) reflect sacculus and inferior vestibular nerve function. Ocular VEMP (oVEMP) however has been hardly examined up to now. In recent studies it has been assumed that AC oVEMP probably reflects superior vestibular nerve function. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate clinical application of the AC oVEMP. MATERIAL AND METHODS: AC oVEMP were recorded in patients with peripheral vestibular disorders (n=21). In addition thermal irritation and head imp

Subjective visual horizontal correlates better with ocular than with cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between widely used otolith function tests: the Subjective Visual Horizontal (SVH) and Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 301 patients who underwent SVH, ocular and cervical VEMP (oVEMP and cVEMP) tests on the same day. Correlations between the mean SVH tilt and amplitude asymmetry ratios for bone-conducted (BC) oVEMP and air-conducted (AC) cVEMP were examined. Diagnoses included vestibular neuritis, stroke, vestibular migraine, Meniere's disease, sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and

The effect of noise exposure on the vestibular systems of dental technicians.

BACKGROUND: Noise exposure is the primary cause of acquired hearing loss in several occupational settings, including dental laboratories and clinics. However, the impact of noise exposure on the vestibular system is not as well researched. PURPOSE: To investigate the nature of vestibular damage caused by working in dental laboratories and clinics with high levels of noise exposure due to loud dental equipment. RESEARCH DESIGN: A descriptive, case study design was used to evaluate the vestibular function of dental technicians. STUDY SAMPLE: Out of 30 dental technicians, 5 males who had been

Bilateral Asymmetry in Ocular Counter-Rolling Reflex Is Associated With Individual Motion Sickness Susceptibility.

Accumulating evidence suggests that individual variations in vestibular functions are associated with motion sickness (MS) susceptibility. We investigated whether vestibular functions in the reflex and cortical pathways could predict the susceptibility of individuals to MS. MS-susceptible and control adults were recruited according to the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ) score. Otolith reflex and cortical functions were assessed using the ocular counter rolling test and the head-tilt subjective visual vertical (HT-SVV) test, respectively. The bilateral asymmetry of each func

[Functional sensitivity of the vestibular analyzer].

A vestibular function was analysed in 50 patients with supratentorial ischemic stroke. It is shown that high incidence of vestibular disorders in focal brain lesions located aside of basic vestibular centers and their correlation with clinical and device data, dynamics of the pathological process evidence for high functional sensitivity of the vestibular analyzer (VA). This sensitivity underlies VA reaction both to morphological and functional-dynamic impacts.

[Vestibular neuritis].

Vestibular neuronitis is an acute disorder of the vestibular apparatus which manifests by sudden vertigo, without apparent cause, and without auditory or neurological symptoms. Clinically and by thermal stimulation tests, it is characterised by unilateral peripheral vestibular deficit. Evolution is favourable in several days to several weeks and prognosis is favourable, although disorders of moderate intensity may rather often persist, in the form of positional vertigo, sometimes paroxysmal, or disorders of equilibrium on abrupt movement. Careful history-taking and clinical examination, routin

Vestibular and audiological findings in the Alport syndrome.

Alport syndrome (AS) is caused by mutations in collagen IV, which is widespread in the basement membranes of many organs, including the kidneys, eyes, and ears. Whereas the effects of collagen IV changes in the cochlea are well known, no changes have been described in the posterior labyrinth. The aim of this study was to investigate both the auditory and the vestibular function of a group of individuals with AS. Seventeen patients, aged 9-52, underwent audiological tests including pure-tone and speech audiometry, immittance test and otoacoustic emissions and vestibular tests including video he

What Do Vestibular Tests Reveal in Vestibular Migraine?

INTRODUCTION: Vestibular migraine (VM) is a common cause of recurrent vertigo, yet no single vestibular test is specific to it. This study aimed to evaluate videonystagmography (VNG), caloric test, and video head impulse test (vHIT) findings in VM patients and to examine the relationships between these tests. METHODS: This retrospective study included 193 patients with definite VM diagnosed per Bárány Society/International Headache Society criteria (January 2016-May 2026). All patients underwent VNG, caloric testing, and vHIT on the same day, in all cases outside an acute attack. Oculomotor,

[Vestibular compensation. Review of the literature and clinical applications].

Vestibular compensation is an excellent model for the study of plasticity of the adult central nervous system. Therefore it has been the subject of several studies in humans and animals, which will be briefly summed up by the authors. Lesions of the labyrinth or vestibular neurectomy are immediately followed of postural and oculomotor disorders, as well as by dynamic deficits of the various vestibular reflexes (vestibulo-ocular and vestibulonucal reflexes). While the former problems always recede in all species, the restoration of the dynamic properties of vestibular reflexes largely depends u
