The inner ear is a barometric pressure sensor-change in barometric pressure induces vestibular ganglion cell activation in mice.

This immunohistochemical study evaluated the activity of primary sensory neurons in the vestibular ganglion in response to lowered barometric pressure (LBP) in mice to assess whether changes in barometric pressure were perceived by the vestibular system. Mice were anesthetized and exposed to three consecutive barometric pressure drops within the range of natural weather variations (-20 hPa from the atmospheric pressure). Following anesthetization and paraformaldehyde perfusion 1-hour post-LBP exposure, activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated protein (Arc) immunoreactive cells in the superio

Conflict-Dependent Gain Control in Area VIP during Visual-Vestibular Self-Motion Processing.

Visual and vestibular signals are continuously integrated to estimate self-motion, yet these sensory cues are often inconsistent under natural conditions. How cortical circuits regulate multisensory interactions under cue conflict while preserving stable heading representations remains poorly understood. Here, we recorded neurons in male macaque ventral intraparietal area (VIP) during passive movement stimulation while systematically varying visual-vestibular heading offsets. VIP neurons exhibited strong conflict-sensitive gain modulation: congruent cues enhanced neuronal responses, whereas in

Distribution of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4 isoazolepropionic acid and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunits in the vestibular and spiral ganglia of the mouse during early development.

We investigated the distribution of the glutamate receptor subunits, alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4 isoazolepropionic acid (AMPA) GluR2 and GluR2/R3, and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) NR1, and the timing of their appearance during early development of the mouse vestibular and spiral ganglia. NMDA NR1 was the first to be expressed, in the statoacoustic ganglion neurons on E11. GluR2/R3 immunoreactivity was detected in these neurons on E12. This signal probably corresponded exclusively to GluR3, as no signal was obtained for GluR2 alone at this stage. The appearance of these proteins began much

The Long and Winding Road-Vestibular Efferent Anatomy in Mice.

The precise functional role of the Efferent Vestibular System (EVS) is still unclear, but the auditory olivocochlear efferent system has served as a reasonable model on the effects of a cholinergic and peptidergic input on inner ear organs. However, it is important to appreciate the similarities and differences in the structure of the two efferent systems, especially within the same animal model. Here, we examine the anatomy of the mouse EVS, from its central origin in the Efferent Vestibular Nucleus (EVN) of the brainstem, to its peripheral terminations in the vestibular organs, and we compar

Vestibular physiology and function in zebrafish.

The vestibular system of the inner ear provides information about head motion and spatial orientation relative to gravity to ensure gaze stability, balance, and postural control. Zebrafish, like humans, have five sensory patches per ear that serve as peripheral vestibular organs, with the addition of the lagena and macula neglecta. The zebrafish inner ear can be easily studied due to its accessible location, the transparent tissue of larval fish, and the early development of vestibular behaviors. Thus, zebrafish are an excellent model for studying the development, physiology, and function of t

Quantitative changes in mRNA expression of glutamate receptors in the rat peripheral and central vestibular systems following hypergravity.

In order to investigate the mechanisms responsible for adaptation to altered gravity, we assessed the changes in mRNA expression of glutamate receptors in vestibular ganglion cells, medial vestibular nucleus, spinal vestibular nucleus/lateral vestibular nucleus, cerebellar flocculus, and uvula/nodulus from rats exposed to hypergravity for 2 h to 1 week using real-time quantitative RT-PCR methods. The mRNA expression of GluR2 and NR1 receptors in the uvula/nodulus and NR1 receptors in the medial vestibular nucleus increased in animals exposed to 2 h of hypergravity, and it decreased gradually t

Anatomic considerations in vestibular neuritis.

HYPOTHESIS: The authors believe that anatomic differences render the superior division of the vestibular nerve more susceptible to injury during vestibular neuritis. The purpose of the study was to investigate anatomic differences between the superior vestibular nerve and singular nerve canals. BACKGROUND: Previous studies of temporal bones have revealed vestibular nerve degeneration in patients with vestibular neuritis. Although the cause of this degeneration has not been established, it has been noted that the superior division of the vestibular nerve is preferentially affected, with sparin

Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin causes massive damage to the developing auditory and vestibular system.

2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD), a cholesterol chelator used to treat Niemann-Pick C1 (NPC1) lysosomal storage disease, causes hearing loss in mammals by preferentially destroying outer hair cells. Because cholesterol plays an important role in early neural development, we hypothesized that HPβCD would cause more extensive damage to postnatal cochlear and vestibular structures in than adult rats. This hypothesis was tested by administering HPβCD to adult rats and postnatal day 3 (P3) cochlear and vestibular organ cultures. Adult rats treated with HPβCD developed hearing impairment and o

Length of the Narrow Bony Channels May Not be the Sole Cause of Differential Involvement of the Nerves in Vestibular Neuritis.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the vestibular nerve bony channels, applying a 3D measurement to account for the oblique trajectory of the singular nerve. BACKGROUND: The clinical syndrome vestibular neuritis affects structures innervated by the superior vestibular nerve more commonly than the inferior vestibular nerve. Anatomical differences such as a longer, narrower bony channel of the superior vestibular nerve may increase its susceptibility to entrapment. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Length of the narrow segment of each vestibular nerve in which the nerve occupies more than 80% of the bony channel was

Acute Vestibular Syndrome.

The acute vestibular syndrome (AVS) is a label for presentations of new-onset severe dizziness, vertigo, or imbalance, with examination findings of nystagmus or gait unsteadiness. The prototypical AVS presentation is the acute unilateral vestibulopathy due to vestibular neuritis. Stroke is also a serious concern in patients with AVS. Most other peripheral vestibular disorders present as episodic or chronic syndromes. In this article, the diagnostic considerations, exam findings, and management of AVS are reviewed.

Vestibular compensation: analysis of postural re-arrangement as a control index for unilateral vestibular deficit.

Patients with an acute unilateral vestibular lesion show an impaired balance control. The initial presentation is vertigo followed by postural instability; but with time, the global balance functions can be completely restored by a process called vestibular compensation. The aim of our study was to evaluate short and long-term variations of postural parameters in 20 patients affected by vestibular neuritis (VN), and to compare these patients to 20 normal individuals using computerized static posturography (CSP) along with patient feedback throughout the spectral frequency analysis. This analys

Molecular mechanisms of vestibular compensation in the central vestibular system--review.

Vestibular compensation consists of two stages: the inhibition of the contralesional medial vestibular nucleus (contra-MVe) activities at the acute stage after unilateral labyrinthectomy (UL) and the recovery and maintenance of the ipsilesional MVe (ipsi-MVe) spontaneous activities at the chronic stage after UL. In this paper, we reviewed molecular mechanisms of vestibular compensation in the central vestibular system using several morphological and pharmacological approaches in rats. Based on our examinations, we propose the following hypotheses: i) at the acute stage after UL, the activated

Functional specializations of the ventral intraparietal area for multisensory heading discrimination.

The ventral intraparietal area (VIP) of the macaque brain is a multimodal cortical region with directionally selective responses to visual and vestibular stimuli. To explore how these signals contribute to self-motion perception, neural activity in VIP was monitored while macaques performed a fine heading discrimination task based on vestibular, visual, or multisensory cues. For neurons with congruent visual and vestibular heading tuning, discrimination thresholds improved during multisensory stimulation, suggesting that VIP (like the medial superior temporal area; MSTd) may contribute to the

Spatial symmetries in vestibular projections to the uvula-nodulus.

The discharge of secondary vestibular neurons relays the activity of the vestibular endorgans, occasioned by movements in three-dimensional physical space. At a slightly higher level of analysis, the discharge of each secondary vestibular neuron participates in a multifiber projection or pathway from primary afferents via the secondary neurons to another neuronal population. The logical organization of this projection determines whether characteristics of physical space are retained or lost. The logical structure of physical space is standardly expressed in terms of the mathematics of group th

Vestibular modulation of plasma vasopressin levels in rats.

Recent studies, which have shown an increase of plasma vasopressin (VP) in experimental motion sickness and the efficacy of VP antagonists for motion sickness, suggest an important role of VP in the development of vestibulo-autonomic responses. We have recently found evidence of the co-existence of vasopressinergic neurons with the stress-sensitive chemokinergic neuronal system in the hypothalamo-pituitary pathway in rats, which uses cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant (CINC) as an effector molecule. In this study, to elucidate possible roles of VP and CINC in the vestibulo-autonomic r

Aged mice are less susceptible to motion sickness and show decreased efferent vestibular activity compared to young adults.

INTRODUCTION: The efferent vestibular system (EVS) is a feedback circuit thought to modulate vestibular afferent activity by inhibiting type II hair cells and exciting calyx-bearing afferents in the peripheral vestibular organs. In a previous study, we suggested EVS activity may contribute to the effects of motion sickness. To determine an association between motion sickness and EVS activity, we examined the effects of provocative motion (PM) on c-Fos expression in brainstem efferent vestibular nucleus (EVN) neurons that are the source of efferent innervation in the peripheral vestibular organ
