The skull vibration-induced nystagmus test is a robust, nonintrusive and easy to perform test. This test acts as a vestibular Weber test and is performed as a bedside examination. It usually instantaneously reveals vibration-induced nystagmus (VIN) even in long standing or chronic compensated unilateral vestibular lesions. The test requires stimulation at 30, 60 or more efficiently at 100Hz. The vibrator is applied perpendicularly to the skin on a subject sitting up straight on the right and then the left mastoid (level with external acoustic meatus) and vertex. The VIN can be observed under v…

Whole-body vibration (WBV) training has exercisers perform static and dynamic resistance training exercises on a ground-based platform. Exposure to WBV exposure has demonstrated benefits and no effect on lower body strength, power, and performance. The aim of this study was to determine if WBV exposure (50 Hz, 2.51 mm) has any potentiating effects postexercise by measuring the kinematic variables of a set of upper body elbow-extensor exercise (70% one-repetition maximum [1RM]) to volitional exhaustion. Sixteen recreationally active students (12 male and 4 female) performed 3 different experime…

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of changes in the proprioceptive signals induced by muscle vibration on multi-finger interaction and coordination. We hypothesized that unintended force production by non-instructed fingers (enslaving) would increase with muscle vibration while synergy indices during steady-state force production would drop. The framework of the uncontrolled manifold hypothesis was used to quantify indices of multi-finger synergies stabilizing total force during steady-state force production and anticipatory changes in these indices (anticipatory synergy…

Maintaining neuromuscular function in older age is an important topic for aging societies, especially for older women with low bone density who may be at risk of falls and bone fracture. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effect of resistive exercise with either whole-body vibration training (VIB) or coordination/balance training (BAL) on neuromuscular function (countermovement jump, multiple 1-leg hopping, sit-to-stand test). 68 postmenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoporosis were recruited for the study. 57 subjects completed the 9-month, twice weekly, intervention period…

BACKGROUND: Current methods of removing organic pollutants from water are becoming ineffective as the world population increases. In this study, a series of biorenewable triblock copolymers with hydrophobic poly(ε-caprolactone) block and hydrophilic poly(l-lactide) blocks were synthesized and tested as agents to remove environmental pollutants from an aqueous solution. The percent of pollutant removed and equilibrium inclusion constants were calculated for the polymers. These values were compared to previously known removal agents for their effectiveness.
RESULTS: Triblock copolymer samples r

In this 6-month trial, twenty children with cerebral palsy (age 6.2 to 12.3 years; 6 girls) were randomized to either continue their school physiotherapy program unchanged or to receive 9 minutes of side-alternating whole-body vibration (WBV; Vibraflex Home Edition II, Orthometrix Inc) per school day in addition to their school physiotherapy program. Patients who had received vibration therapy increased the average walking speed in the 10 m walk test by a median of 0.18 ms(-1) (from a baseline of 0.47 ms(-1)), whereas there was no change in the control group (P=0.03 for the group difference in…

BACKGROUND: The "gate control" theory suggests pain can be reduced by simultaneous activation of nerve fibres that conduct non-noxious stimuli. This study investigated the effects of vibration stimuli on pain experienced during local anaesthetic injections.
METHODS: In a preliminary study, subjects were asked to rate anticipated and actual pain from regional anaesthetic injections in the oral cavity. A second study compared, within subjects, pain from injections with and without a simultaneous vibration stimulus. Both infiltration and block anaesthetic injection techniques were assessed. In e…

Acoustic effects of the time-varying glottal area due to vocal fold vibration on the laryngeal cavity resonance were investigated based on vocal tract area functions and acoustic analysis. The laryngeal cavity consists of the vestibular and ventricular parts of the larynx, and gives rise to a regional acoustic resonance within the vocal tract, with this resonance imparting an extra formant to the vocal tract resonance pattern. Vocal tract transfer functions of the five Japanese vowels uttered by three male subjects were calculated under open- and closed-glottis conditions. The results revealed…

Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) results from excessive exposure to hand-transmitted vibration. Whether the peripheral nerve damage characteristic of HAVS is a direct result of vibration or is secondary to vascular insufficiency remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of vibration exposure on axoplasmic transport in peripheral nerves and soleus motor neurons. Sciatic nerves and motor neurons from rats following two 5-h periods of vibration exposure demonstrated disruption in retrograde transport compared to normal. After 10 days of vibration (5 h/day), axoplasmic…

Vibration-induced white finger (VWF) is secondary Raynaud's phenomenon caused by vibrating hand tools. Initially described in 1911 by Loriga, the pathophysiology of VWF remains unclear. This review attempts to summarize the current common and the most modern theories of the pathogenesis of VWF and propose a model of multifactorial etiology. The role of vasoregulatory abnormalities--autonomic dysfunction, local vasoregulatory abnormalities, of the endothelial cell control, of hemostasis, fibrinolysis and hemorrheology, of the leukocyte activation and the levels cell adhesion molecules and pro-i…

The present study investigates the clinical applicability of a new device, which objectively measured nasal resonating vibration via piezoelectric vibratory sensor in 10 normal volunteers, 10 patients with definite hypernasality, and 10 nasal polyposis patients. For the assessment of the hypernasality, the ratio of /ng/ to /a/ as well as the ratio of /mama/ to /papa/ passages were used. For the evaluation of hyponasality, the ratio of nasal vibration postinduced to preinduced cul-de-sac resonation was calculated. The control group showed the ratio of /ng/ to /a/ and /mama/ to /papa/ passages t…
