Visceral artery aneurysms: A shred of light on rare entities.

Visceral artery aneurysms (VAAs) and pseudoaneurysms are rare but clinically significant vascular pathologies with potentially fatal complications including rupture. VAAs are often asymptomatic and frequently discovered incidentally during imaging performed for unrelated reasons. Their pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and management vary based on the etiology, anatomical location, and patient-specific factors. The prognosis for conservatively managed VAAs is generally favorable, with slow growth rates and low rupture risks. However, pseudoaneurysms, often associated with trauma or pancr…

The relationship between brain and visceral asymmetry: Evidence from situs inversus in humans.

This review examines the relationship between visceral and brain asymmetry and explores whether their alignment observed in some vertebrate species also exists in humans. While the development of visceral and brain asymmetry may have occurred for different reasons, it is possible that the basic mechanisms for left-right differentiation of the visceral system were duplicated in the brain. We describe the main phenotypical anomalies and the general mechanism of left-right differentiation in vertebrates, followed by a systematic review of available human studies on behavioral and brain asymmetry …

[Intrauterine programming of reproductive function--a valid concept?].

Early intrauterine fetal (mis)programming determines not only cardiovascular and metabolic regulation in later life, but also reproductive function. Intrauterine growth restriction may be associated with precocious maturation of gonadal function and an earlier onset of puberty and menarche. Especially prenatal androgen excess has negative effects on the development of the ovaries and female genital phenotype itself as well as on the neuroendocrine feedback regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis followed by a polycystic ovary syndrome with hyperandrogenism and anovulation in late

[Polysplenia with partial abdominal visceral heterotaxia and small pancreas].

Several morphological congenital abnormalities are associated in the polysplenia syndrome: partial visceral abdominal heterotaxy, levoisomerism, abdominal vascular abnormalities, cardiac and extrahepatic biliary malformations and polysplenia. The syndrome is usually apparent during childhood because of its severe outcome; its detection during adult life is rare. We present a 42-years-old patient, asymptomatic, with right sided polysplenia and stomach, intestinal malrotation, centrally located liver with both lobes of similar size, preduodenal portal vein, interruption of the inferior caval vei…

[Morphologic manifestations of cutaneous and visceral cryptococcosis].

It is a review of the literature plus the description of the three cases of the skin and visceral cryptococcosis diagnosed after the histologic examination of surgical and biopsy material. As clinical diagnosis is difficult, the microscopy of glasses-"prints" from damaged organs stained with a black dye for a rapid revealing of cryptococci is recommended. An important role of hormonal preparations and antibiotics withdrawal is pointed out as their use activates the fungal flora.

Ventilatory management of the patient with hyperimmunoglobulinemia E (Job) syndrome.

Hyperimmunoglobulinemia E (Job syndrome) is a primary immunodeficiency that features abscesses of the skin, lung, and viscera; pneumonia; and elevated levels of serum immunoglobulin E. Pulmonary infections lead to lung abscesses, pneumatoceles, and bronchiectasis. We report the ventilatory management of a patient with Job syndrome.

Cutaneous amyloidosis in a horse with lymphoma.

A horse with malignant lymphoma (histiolymphocytic) and cutaneous amyloidosis is described. The lymphoma involved the dura mater of the spinal cord and some of the peripheral lymph nodes. Multifocal amyloid deposits were present in the skin and subcutis of the ventral abdomen but not within the lymphoma cell infiltrates or in the viscera.

Hemoperitoneum secondary to an spontaneous rupture of the spleen mimmicking a duodenal perforated ulcera: A case report.

Spontaneous rupture of the spleen without traumatic cause is an unfrequent entity, usually related with pathologic spleens. We present a case of spontaneous rupture of an histologically normal spleen with splenomegalia secondary to smoking habit. The hemoperitoneum caused by the spontaneous rupture of the spleen mimmicked a hollow viscera perforation.

[Congenital transdiaphragmatic hernia with a late manifestation].

A case of diaphragmatic pathology is presented consisting in transdiaphragmatic penetration of abdominal viscera. It raised problems of differential diagnosis with other intrapleural pathology. X-ray aspects should not be interpreted without including them into the general clinical and laboratory data in order to avoid errors of diagnosis and treatment.

Traumatic ventral abdominal hernia associated with small bowel gangrene: case report.

A rare case is presented of traumatic subcutaneous rupture of the rectus abdominis with ventral herniation and decollement of the jejunum and transverse colon. Irreversible ischemia of the small bowel had occurred following a large mesenteric avulsion. Computed tomographic scanning detected the parietal defect and identified the herniating viscera.

Changes in measurable ultrasonographic parameters in growing Arabian foals from birth to 1 year.

BACKGROUND: Utrasonographic measurements of the abdominal viscera and the heart in growing Arabian foals have not been described. OBJECTIVES: To establish normal intervals for ultrasonographic measurements of cardiac indices and abdominal viscera in growing Arabian foals from birth to 1 year of age. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective longitudinal descriptive study. METHODS: Ultrasonographic images were captured from 15 foals every 3 months from 1 week to 1 year of age. During each examination, at least three images were obtained at each location and measurements were obtained using standardised ultr…

Cardiac and Non-Cardiac Abnormalities in Heterotaxy Syndrome.

Thoraco-abdominal viscera have unique morphological asymmetry, unlike the body's external organs. Heterotaxy syndrome is a disorder in which there is a loss of normal left to right asymmetry of thoraco-abdominal viscera and their naturally proscribed spatial relationship. It has multiple anatomical alterations, culminating into physiological and hemodynamic consequences. It is divided into two groups on the basis of morphology of the two atrial appendages. These subgroups are - 1) Isomerism of right atrial appendage (asplenia syndrome); 2) Isomerism of left atrial appendage (polysplenia syndro…
