Creating consistency in the diagnosis of convergence insufficiency: screening methods.

PURPOSE: To determine the sensitivity of various clinical tests in the diagnosis of convergence insufficiency. METHODS: A total of 254 patients were recruited with complaints consistent with convergence problems but no prior history of strabismus surgery, eye exercises, prism use, recent concussion, or other ocular or neurological diseases. Each patient completed the convergence insufficiency symptom survey (CISS), and the following data were collected: ocular alignment at distance and near, convergence and divergence fusional amplitudes at distance and near, near-point of convergence (NPC) u

Convergence Insufficiency in the Geriatric Population.

SIGNIFICANCE: The present study is the first population-based study to examine the prevalence of convergence insufficiency and its associations specifically in the geriatric population. Knowledge of the population-based determination of prevalence of this disorder in the elderly is necessary to support proper clinical diagnosis and management. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of convergence insufficiency and its associated factors in a geriatric population. METHODS: In this study, all residents older than 60 years in Tehran city were selected through random stratified cl

Rapid Loss and Recovery of Vision Following Steroid Treatment in Orbital Myositis: A Case Report.

A 65-year-old African American man initially presented to the emergency department complaining of headaches, retro-orbital pressure, decreas … ft side. The patient was immediately hospitalized for further evaluation and steroid treatment. His vision, ocular symptoms, and physical findings dramatically and rapidly improved with a 3-day course of high-dose intravenous steroids. Existing literature is sparse on rapid loss and recovery of vision following steroid treatment for orbital myositis. The exact m …

[Neuro-ophthalmologic and otoneurologic sequelae of injuries to the skull and brain].

An examination was conducted in 310 persons surviving injuries of the scull and brain of varying severity. In 146 patients the acuity of vision, pupil reactions, the oculomotor function of the nerves, visual fields and ocular fundus were examined, employing florescent angiography in some cases: and in 164 patients the state of the acoustic and vestibular analyzers was studied. The neuro-ophthalmological sequelae of scull and brain injuries manifested themselves mainly in disorders of the acuity of vision and in alterations of the fields of vision, those of the ocular fundus being less distinct

Conscious vision: Why wait?

Fleming and Michel convincingly argue that the water-to-land transition put evolutionary pressure on the temporal structure of conscious vision. But their interpretation of postdictive effects, which leads them to conclude that conscious vision is slow, suffers from conceptual issues and inadvertently leads them to an overly discrete and serial model of temporal consciousness.

Scientometric analysis of extracellular vesicles in vision science (up to 2024).

BACKGROUND: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) in vision science have gained significant attention. However, a comprehensive scientometric analysis of the key major contributors, the current research landscape, and development trends is still lacking. OBJECTIVES: To detect and visualize the research strengths, knowledge base, and research frontiers of EVs in vision science. METHODS: Publications of EVs on vision science were systematically collected from Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Embase, covering the inception of each database up to December 31, 2024. Following data cleaning, a bibliomet

Vision: Rules of thalamic mixology.

The retina generates rich feature representations of the visual world that pass through the thalamus on their way to cortex and perception. A new study reveals rules that govern the separation and combination of retinal inputs in the thalamus.

Vision-Based Hybrid Controller to Release a 4-DOF Parallel Robot from a Type II Singularity.

The high accuracy and dynamic performance of parallel robots (PRs) make them suitable to ensure safe operation in human-robot interaction. However, these advantages come at the expense of a reduced workspace and the possible appearance of type II singularities. The latter is due to the loss of control of the PR and requires further analysis to keep the stiffness of the PR even after a singular configuration is reached. All or a subset of the limbs could be responsible for a type II singularity, and they can be detected by using the angle between two output twist screws (OTSs). However, this an

The unspecified role of cones and rods in grating detection: a theoretical note.

Detection and resolution thresholds for two 50 ms square-wave gratings (1.5 and 6.7 cps) were determined as a function of background luminance. Results indicated differential cone and rod involvement in resolution of the two targets at low background levels. Implications for other studies employing similar stimuli in terms of retinal inhomogeneity were suggested.

Orbit fractures: Identifying patient factors indicating high risk for ocular and periocular injury.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Maxillofacial trauma frequently involves the bony orbit that surrounds the ocular globe. Concomitant globe injury is a concern whenever orbit trauma occurs and in severe cases can occasionally result in vision loss. The mechanism of injury, physical exam findings, and radiographic imaging can provide useful information concerning the severity of the injury and concerns for vision loss. Using these three tools, it is hypothesized that the patient's history, physical exam, and radiographic findings can identify high-risk maxillofacial trauma patients with concomitant ocula
