The mainstay for cobalamin deficiency is correction of the underlying disorder and replacement therapy. Because the defect is often one of absorption, parenteral or intranasal routes are recommended. In most cases, replacement therapy is all that is needed. The vitamin preparation most commonly used is cyanocobalamin (also called vitamin B12), which has no known physiologic role but instead is converted to a biologically active form before it can be used by tissues. The studies reviewed in this article clearly show that omeprazole therapy will decrease the absorption of vitamin B12 by preventi

Vitamins B9 (folate) and B12 are essential water-soluble vitamins that play a crucial role in the maintenance of one-carbon metabolism: a set of interconnected biochemical pathways driven by folate and methionine to generate methyl groups for use in DNA synthesis, amino acid homeostasis, antioxidant generation, and epigenetic regulation. Dietary deficiencies in B9 and B12, or genetic polymorphisms that influence the activity of enzymes involved in the folate or methionine cycles, are known to cause developmental defects, impair cognitive function, or block normal blood production. Nutritional

CA 15-3 is a tumor-associated antigen and is overexpressed in breast tumors, and may also be high in some other non-cancerous conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of megaloblastic anemia due to vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency on the levels of tumor markers. Five-year patient data were retrospectively analyzed. The associations between megaloblastic anemia due to vitamin B12 deficiency and CA 15-3, CA 125, CA 19-9, CEA, and AFP levels were analyzed. Furthermore, association between CA 15-3 level and megaloblastic anemia due to folic acid deficiency was evaluated.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is crucial for optimal child development and growth, yet deficiency is common worldwide. The aim of this study is twofold; (1) to describe vitamin B12 status and the status of other micronutrients in Norwegian infants, and (2) in a randomised controlled trial (RCT), investigate the effect of vitamin B12 supplementation on neurodevelopment in infants with subclinical vitamin B12 deficiency.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Infant blood samples, collected at public healthcare clinics, are analysed for plasma cobalamin levels. Infants with plasma cobalamin <148 pmol/L

Adequate vitamin B12 (B12) and folate concentrations are essential for neural development in early childhood, but studies in well-nourished children are lacking. We investigated the relation between plasma B12 and folate at 9 and 36 months and psychomotor development at 36 months in well-nourished Danish children. Subjects from the SKOT cohorts with B12 measurement and completed Ages and Stages Questionnaire, 3rd edition (ASQ-3) at 36 months were included (n 280). Dietary intake, B12 and folate concentrations were collected at 9 and 36 months, and ASQ-3 was assessed at 36 months. Associations

Vitamin B12 is a water soluble micronutrient found in animal foods. Its deficiency is not uncommon in India owing to vegetarianism but often unrecognized due to diverse clinical manifestations. This review aims to collate the current data on vitamin B12 status in healthy Indian adult and elderly population. Online database Pubmed was searched for articles published in English between 2000 and 2019. Inclusion criteria consisted of original studies conducted on apparently healthy adult and elderly Indian population reporting serum/plasma vitamin B12 levels. Comprehensive literature search identi

A young Australian woman developed a severe nutritional megaloblastic anaemia due to poor intake of vitamin B12 and, possibly, of folic acid. Simple dietary advice resulted in an adequate intake of vitamin B12 and folic acid, and in maintenance of normal serum levels of both vitamins.

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: To evaluate the benefits and harms of oral vitamin B12 supplementation on vitamin B12 status, anaemia, and health outcomes in women of reproductive age.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with a wide spectrum of neuro-psychiatric manifestations.
RESULTS: We report a case of a 44 year old female patient referred to the haematology unit with vitamin B12 deficiency presenting as an acute confusional state or delirium. Total resolution of the psychiatric symptoms occurred following parenteral vitamin B12 replacement therapy.
CONCLUSION: This case report highlights one of the neuro-psychiatric presentations of vitamin B12 deficiency in a previously healthy individual.

MacroB12 interference presents a significant challenge in the diagnosis of Vitamin B12 status, potentially masking true deficiency. To establish robust predictors and quantify the utility of pre-polyethene glycol (PEG) B12 levels, we conducted a retrospective analysis of 875 individuals with hypercobalaminemia (>1000 pg/mL), using multiple imputation to handle missing data. Multivariable regression modelling revealed that PEG-defined MacroB12 positivity (<30% PEG recovery) was independently associated with a profile suggestive of autoimmunity, including older age (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.0

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B-12 (cobalamin) is an essential micronutrient required for neurologic function, hematopoiesis, and DNA synthesis. Oral absorption of vitamin B-12 occurs through an intrinsic factor (IF)-dependent pathway at physiological intake amounts supplemented by passive diffusion at pharmacologic doses. Vitamin B-12 deficiency is a global public health concern, with certain populations such as older adults and pregnant women at higher risk. Despite adherence to intake recommendations, a substantial proportion of pregnant women exhibit suboptimal vitamin B-12 status. A pharmacokinetic

Vitamin B12 deficiency can manifest in various forms, including skin changes in the form of hyperpigmentation. The hyperpigmentation in vitamin B12 deficiency commonly presents over the hands and feet, but presenting over the face and oral cavity is very rare. Here we describe an interesting case where there was hyperpigmentation in the face and oral cavity which was mimicking Addison's disease, but the actual diagnosis was vitamin B12 deficiency. This case stresses that knowing the uncommon manifestations of common disease is more important than knowing the common manifestations of uncommon d

Diphyllobothriosis is a tapeworm infection and is associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked fish. Among causative pathogens of human tapeworm infection, Dibothriocephalus nihonkaiensis is the second most prevalent species, contributing to over 2000 cases of human infection annually. Although D. nihonkaiensis is primarily distributed in the northern Pacific region, several cases have recently been reported from other parts of the world, including the United States. As there is a concern regarding the further spread of D. nihonkaiensis infection, accurate diagnosis and understanding

Plant-based diets are increasingly popular worldwide. A well-planned plant-based diet lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. In contrast, a poorly planned plant-based diet increases the risk of certain micronutrient deficiencies, chiefly, vitamin B12 (B12). Because B12 is not present in plants or in unfortified plant-based foodstuffs, the safest way to prevent its deficiency in plant-based diets is to take an oral B12 supplement. Studies determining the dose and frequency of B12 to be taken by healthy individuals on a plant-based diet to support an adeq
