BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a long-standing progressive autoimmune disease with depigmented macules/patches with significant psychological morbidity to the patients. From being one of the most poorly understood diseases in the past, there has been a rampant advance in determining the molecular and genetic factors influencing the disease process. More light has been shed on the complex intracellular environment and interplay between innate and adaptive immunity. We analyzed the records of 211 pediatric patients with vitiligo. 57.8% of patients were females and 42.2% were males. Leukotrichia and family history were present in 29.4% and 15.6% of patients, respectively, while 39.3% of patients had anemia. Elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone and fasting blood glucose levels were seen in 5.2% and 3.3% of patients, respectively. Antinuclear antibody was positive in 12 (5.6%) patients.

Vitiligo in children and adolescents displays some distinct features, which may affect its clinical course, therapeutic outcome, and prognosis. We studied 579 children and adolescents with vitiligo, comprising 275 (47.5%) boys and 304 (52.5%) girls (male:female ratio [m:f], 1:1.1) aged between 2 and 19 years (mean ± SD 11.13 ± 4.23 years). We report the case of a 59-year-old woman who simultaneously suffered from psoriasis and vitiligo. The depigmented areas were predominantly but not exclusively limited to current or former psoriatic plaques. These two diseases share many common features, e. g., both are T‑cell-mediated autoimmune diseases in which the Koebner phenomenon occurs. However, it is still not known whether the coincidence is random or significant. Prospective clinical and epidemiological research will hopefully reveal the association soon.

Medical treatments alone, or in combination with phototherapy, are key approaches for treating nonsegmental vitiligo and, to a lesser extent, segmental vitiligo.
