A meta-analysis of the relationship between speech and language development in children with nonsyndromic cleft palate with or without cleft lip.

OBJECTIVE: Children with nonsyndromic cleft palate with or without cleft lip are at risk of speech production and language delays. In typical development, a strong relationship exists between speech and expressive language development. However, the understanding of this relationship in children with nonsyndromic cleft palate with or without cleft lip is incomplete. The objective of this study was to determine the average correlation between consonant inventory and two expressive language skills in children with NSCP ± L. DESIGN: The study used a random effects meta-analyses design. Articles w

Language development delay in 24-month-old children at a health care center of the City of Buenos Aires.

INTRODUCTION: Language development delay is a frequent challenge for pediatricians and other health care providers. The main objective of this study was to establish its prevalence among children attending a health care center. POPULATION AND METHODS: The expressive vocabulary of 24-month-old children attending a health care center was assessed using the Spanish language MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories, short form (Argentine version). The association between language delay and demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral/emotional, and parental stress characteristics was analy

Language delay and behavioral/emotional problems in toddlers: findings from two developmental clinics.

PURPOSE: The association between language delay and behavior problems in toddlers was examined in 2 studies, 1 conducted in a developmental clinic in New Jersey (Study 1; N = 83) and the other conducted in a developmental clinic in New York (Study 2; N = 103). METHOD: In both clinics, parents of 18- to 35-month-olds completed the Language Development Survey (LDS) and the Child Behavior Checklist/1.5-5 (CBCL). In Study 2, the Preschool Language Scale-Fourth Edition (PLS-4) was also administered. Neurodevelopmental delay (ND) and pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) symptoms were also assesse

Language Access is a Catalyst for Early Numerical Abilities.

Recent research has found that the cumulative amount of time a child has had auditory access to language accounts for differences in early numerical abilities between oral Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) and hearing preschoolers. We replicate and extend these findings by exploring the role of language ability and salience of numerical information with a larger sample (N = 89; 43 female; majority White) of 3- 6-year-old oral DHH and hearing children. We captured number knowledge, numerical discrimination, salience of numerical information, and parent-reports of vocabulary and language experience

Verbal short-term memory in individuals with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion: specific deficit in serial order retention capacities?

Many researchers have recently explored the cognitive profile of velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS), a neurodevelopmental disorder linked to a 22q11.2 deletion. However, verbal short-term memory has not yet been systematically investigated. We explored verbal short-term memory abilities in a group of 11 children and adults presenting with VCFS and two control groups, matched on either CA or vocabulary knowledge, by distinguishing short-term memory for serial order and item information. The VCFS group showed impaired performance on the serial order short-term memory tasks compared to both control

Gabapentin may promote language development in a pediatric patient with autism spectrum disorder: a case report.

At this time, there is no report of how gabapentin may promote language development in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experiencing neuropathic pain. A clinically significant increase in expressed vocabulary, around 10 words when gabapentin was prescribed to around 150 words at the 6-month follow-up, was observed in a child with ASD. This was likely due to improved symptoms of neuropathic pain, which could have allowed the patient to more effectively focus on language acquisition. Given that speech therapy had failed for years at that time to improve the patient's vocabulary and h

From information to existence: the Information-Meaning-Existence (IBE) framework as a meta-method for second-order observation.

Sociological systems theory offers a rich vocabulary for meaning, observation, and communication, but that vocabulary has proven difficult to translate into executable, testable, and revisable procedures. This gap has become more consequential as large language models are increasingly used to read, summarize, and simulate social-scientific discourse without any shared standard for distinguishing genuine semantic stabilization from fluent but ungrounded continuation. This paper introduces the Information-Meaning-Existence (IBE) framework, which reconstructs Luhmannian second-order observation a

Subcortical and cerebellar volume differences in bilingual and monolingual children: An ABCD study.

Research suggests that bilingual children experience an extension or delay in the closing of the sensitive/critical period of language development due to multiple language exposure. Moreover, bilingual experience may impact the development of subcortical regions, although these conclusions are drawn from research with adults, as there is a scarcity of research during late childhood and early adolescence. The current study included 1215 bilingual and 5894 monolingual children from the ABCD Study to examine the relationship between subcortical volume and English vocabulary in heritage Spanish bi

Facilitating writing performance of EFL learners via virtual reality: Immersion, presence, embodiment.

Immersive virtual reality (IVR) technology is being used to help EFL learners overcome their difficulties with their language skills, especially writing skills. Past studies showed that the instrument that provides immersion will positively affect learners' written performance. In line with that, this study aims to investigate the vocabulary usage and writing performance of learners who learn vocabulary via IVR versus those who learn from conventional classroom-based instruction. A total of 144 Chinese-speaking English learners, who were divided into experimental group (N = 69) and control gro

Language Development in the Second Year of Life: The Case of Children with Sex Chromosome Trisomies Diagnosed before Birth.

Many individual factors, such as early communicative skills, could play a role in explaining later linguistic outcomes. The detection of predictive variables is fundamental to identifying early the children who need intervention. The present study focuses on children with sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs), genetic conditions with an increased risk of developing language delays or impairments. The aims are to analyse their communicative skills at 18 months of age, and identify significant predictors of their later vocabulary size. Participants were 76 18-month-old children (38 with SCTs, and 38 t

An Early Reading Assessment Battery for Multilingual Learners in Malaysia.

The aim of the study was to develop a new comprehensive reading assessment battery for multi-ethnic and multilingual learners in Malaysia. Using this assessment battery, we examined the reliability, validity, and dimensionality of the factors associated with reading difficulties/disabilities in the Malay language, a highly transparent alphabetic orthography. In order to further evaluate the reading assessment battery, we compared results from the assessment battery with those obtained from the Malaysian national screening instrument. In the study, 866 Grade 1 children from multi-ethnic and mul

Loss of basic lexical knowledge in old age.

BACKGROUND: Basic lexical skills are hypothesised to be relatively preserved in mild dementia, but clinical studies have reported inconsistent results. METHODS: More than 400 older Catholic nuns, priests and brothers recruited from groups across the USA completed annual evaluations for up to 15 years, died and underwent brain autopsy. Each clinical evaluation included administration of a 20-item word reading test and a 15-item vocabulary test, which were combined to form a composite measure of word knowledge. In a uniform neuropathological examination, Alzheimer's disease pathology was quanti

Development of gestalt-reading processes in children: assessment using the Boder test.

According to Boder, there are two processes involved in reading: visual-gestalt and analytic-phonetic. The gestalt process is activated for known words, forming part of the child's "sight vocabulary", and it enables him/her to recognize words even when they are exposed for a very short time. The analytic-phonetic process involves the auditory channel when the words are not part of the "sight vocabulary" and require a spelling process. At first, neither the English version nor the Italian adaptation of the Boder test included a control of word exposition time (ET) and reading time (RT). Both pa

Associations Between Parent Mental State Language and Child Inhibitory Control in Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

PURPOSE: Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) are at increased risk for neurocognitive delays, which can have cascading effects on development. Associations between neurocognition and the content of parental language-specifically the use of mental state vocabulary-have been observed in typically hearing (TH) children. This study investigated the role of parental use of mental state language (e.g., vocabulary related to thought processes, desires, and emotions) in explaining variability in neurocognition in children who are D/HH. METHOD: Dyads of 62 TH and 69 D/HH children who wear

The effectiveness of a specifically-designed language intervention protocol on the cochlear implanted children's communication development.

OBJECTIVE: Although various studies have depicted the importance of language intervention programs in facilitating language acquisition in cochlear implanted children, to this date rarely has a specific language intervention approach been recommended as better than the other and no best practice has been introduced in terms of language acquisition outcomes. Thus, the therapists remain uncertain as to which approach to follow and how to apply evidence to practice. Hence, the main goal of this study was to take a step in this regard by comparing the communication development of pediatric cochlea

Comparison of the Reynell Developmental Language Scale II and the Galker test of word-recognition-in-noise in Danish day-care children.

OBJECTIVE: To search for predictive factors for language development measured by two receptive language tests for children, the Galker test (a word-recognition-in-noise test) testing hearing and vocabulary, and the Danish version of Reynell Developmental Language Scale (2nd revision, RDLS II) test, a language comprehension test. The study analysed if information about background variables and parents and pre-school teachers was predictive for test scores; if earlier middle ear disease, actual hearing loss and tympanometry was important for language development; and if the two receptive tests d

Movements during sleep correlate with impaired attention and verbal and memory skills in children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy suspected of having obstructive sleep disordered breathing.

BACKGROUND: Children with obstructive sleep disordered breathing (OSDB) have both impaired cognitive performance and frequent movements during sleep. It is not known whether movements during sleep are related to cognitive function. METHODS: We studied 56 children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy suspected of having OSDB with actigraphy for six consecutive days and nights, followed by cognitive and performance tests. Attended polysomnography was performed on the seventh night. RESULTS: Slower reaction time correlated with both higher sum of all movements during Time in Bed (r(2)=0.19, p=0.001)

Does peptidome mimicry shape host-parasite coevolution?

The peptidome mimicry hypothesis (PMH) builds on the principle that vertebrate immunity recognizes peptides absent from the host proteome. It extends this idea to predict host-parasite coevolution outcomes, systematic 'missing peptides', the narrow host specificity of many parasites, and the higher susceptibility of some interspecies hybrids to infection. PMH proposes that long-term coevolution reduces parasite peptide vocabularies and drives convergence toward host repertoires - a pattern that can help to infer a parasite's original host. For example, analyses of SARS-CoV-2 peptide vocabulari

Effects of video based training on spoken and signed language acquisition by students with mental retardation.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of video presentations on the acquisition of both spoken and manually signed lexical items by students with mental retardation. A 10-lesson curriculum in which lexical items were introduced and reviewed by one of three pedagogical methods (therapist only, therapist plus video, or video only) was implemented over a four week period. Pretest and posttest measures of expressive and receptive vocabulary of 35 students with mental retardation revealed that all three methods resulted in significant increases in both spoken and manual sign productio

Arabic text preprocessing for dynamic searchable symmetric encryption: An empirical evaluation and preprocessor selection framework.

Dynamic Searchable Symmetric Encryption (DSSE) enables keyword search over encrypted data without revealing plaintext to the server. Arabic morphological richness - where a single root generates dozens of surface forms - creates substantial challenges for encrypted search: unprocessed vocabularies inflate encrypted-index size and transmission cost, and limit retrieval recall by failing to match morphological variants. This paper presents the first empirically grounded preprocessor selection framework for Arabic DSSE, derived from a systematic evaluation of four Arabic preprocessing strategies
