Effects of sex steroids on women's health: implications for practitioners.

Androgen excess in women is manifested typically by clinical features that may include hirsutism, acne, central obesity, male-pattern baldness, upper torso widening, increased waist-to-hip ratio, clitoral hypertrophy, and deepening of the voice. The differential diagnosis includes androgen-producing ovarian and adrenal neoplasms, Cushing's syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, and the intake of exogenous androgens. Physicians treating patients for one symptom of androgen excess must be alert for other symptoms and signs. The cosmetic manifestations of androgen excess belie the serious health ri

Event-related potential evidence of accessing gender stereotypes to aid source monitoring.

Source memory for the speaker's voice (male or female) was investigated when semantic knowledge (gender stereotypes) could and could not inform the episodic source judgment while event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. Source accuracy was greater and response times were faster when stereotypes could predict the speaker's voice at test. Recollection supported source judgments in both conditions as indicated by significant parietal "old/new" ERP effects (500-800ms). Prototypical late ERP effects (the right frontal "old/new" effect and the late posterior negativity, LPN) were evident when

Perceived language legitimacy as a psychological judgment: a conceptual analysis of recognition, belonging, and self-worth.

This article develops perceived language legitimacy (PLL) as a theoretically refined framework for examining how languages and varieties come to be regarded as authoritative, valuable, or marginal within particular social contexts. Existing accounts of language attitudes, symbolic power, and language ideology have provided important explanations of linguistic evaluation and inequality. Less attention, however, has been given to the psychological appraisal through which speakers anticipate whether a language or variety will be accepted as a credible resource for knowledge, identity, authority,

Promise and Caution: Mapping Opportunities for AI Decision Support in Emergency Medical Services.

Designing AI-enabled decision support for fast-paced medical teams remains underexplored. We use Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as a critical use case to examine where AI can, and should not, support time-critical decision-making. We conducted participatory design workshops and formative user evaluations with EMS providers to elicit, prototype, and critique candidate AI application areas for EMS work. Providers identified several promising uses of AI: (1) AI-enabled information retrieval to accelerate access to protocols and medication references; (2) speech-based documentation support to re

Digital conversation companions.

Advances in voice recognition and artificial intelligence (AI) could soon yield digital conversation companions-software that combines conversational AI with health monitoring and promotion. We describe how this technology, once developed and deployed, could transform the way older adults age and receive care. By obviating the need to read or type, the software could be used by individuals with reduced dexterity, vision, or literacy. Repeated conversations could facilitate the consistent longitudinal tracking of mental acuity and sentiment. Over time, the conversations could be tailored to str…

Interfacial Charge-Transfer Engineering in Borophene-MWCNT Heterostructures for Multifunctional Humidity and Physiological Sensing.

Humidity sensing is essential in medical fields such as respiratory support, neonatal care, sterilization, and pharmaceutical storage. Howev … ty of the device suggests its potential in areas beyond conventional sensing, including non-contact voice recognition, skin humidity mapping, and real-time breath monitoring. These results lay a solid foundation for developing borophene-MWCNT heterostructures into a high-performance platform for next-generation medical diagnostics and intelligent health monitoring.

Emotion displays in ambulance calls for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: A qualitative inquiry of caller and call-taker communication.

INTRODUCTION: Caller emotion influences the flow of emergency ambulance calls for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) however limited research has examined how call-takers manage emotion. We aimed to identify how and where emotion manifests in OHCA calls and how call-takers respond. METHODS: We analysed 107 consecutive OHCA calls to St John Western Australia (January-April 2021) containing emotion-related barriers to bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (B-CPR). Calls were ranked using the Emotional Content and Cooperation Score; 62 calls scoring 4 or 5 were included. We developed a sche

Student-AI interaction in computer-assisted consecutive interpreting: patterns and performance.

While student-AI interaction patterns have been explored in self-paced cross-linguistic tasks such as L2 writing and translation post-editing, little is known about how students interact with AI in bilingual tasks under intense cognitive and temporal constraints. This study uses computer-assisted consecutive interpreting (CACI) as a window to examine student-AI interaction patterns in such high-stakes environments. Twenty-two Chinese-native interpreting trainees, grouped by prior AI training experience, performed bidirectional CACI tasks using AI-enabled systems integrating automatic speech re

Deep neck space Infections in children: Peritonsillar, retropharyngeal, parapharyngeal, and Ludwig's angina emergencies in the pediatric emergency department.

Pediatric deep neck space infections (DNSIs)-peritonsillar, retropharyngeal, and parapharyngeal abscesses and Ludwig's angina-are uncommon but potentially life-threatening due to rapid progression to airway obstruction, sepsis, and mediastinal extension. This narrative review summarizes evidence for emergency clinicians. A literature search of PubMed/Scopus (2000-2025) identified studies on pediatric DNSI epidemiology, imaging, microbiology, and management. DNSIs peak at ages 2-5 years because of prominent retropharyngeal lymph nodes. Nonspecific symptoms (fever, irritability, neck stiffness)

Menstrual health as an occupational equity issue in high-stress industries: A narrative review.

This review examines menstrual health as a neglected dimension of women's health and occupational equity, with particular attention to high-stress and gendered occupational contexts. It asks how menstruation is addressed or silenced within workplace health frameworks, and how these dynamics are intensified in safety-critical, shift-based, and regulated occupations. A narrative review was conducted to synthesize literature from occupational health, feminist organizational scholarship, health policy, aviation studies, and workplace inclusion research. Aviation is used as a focal case, bringing t

Affective prosody perception in symptomatically remitted patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Affect perception has frequently been shown to be impaired in patients suffering from schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (BD), but it remains unclear whether these impairments exist during symptomatic remission and whether the two disorders differ from each other in this regard. Most previous studies have investigated facial affect recognition, but not the ability to decode mental states from emotional tone of voice, i.e. affective prosody perception (APP). Accordingly, the present study directly compared APP in symptomatically remitted patients with schizophrenia or BD and healthy control subj

Equity in Pharmacovigilance: The Role of Health Literacy in Centering Marginalized Patient Voices.

Health literacy is a critical yet often overlooked determinant in pharmacovigilance, particularly in the context of socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. This article explores how low health literacy impedes the recognition and reporting of adverse drug reactions (ADRs), contributing to systemic underreporting and inequity in drug safety monitoring. Despite global advances in pharmacovigilance infrastructure, marginalized groups, such as rural communities, indigenous populations, and low-income patients, remain underrepresented in safety databases due to barriers in accessing, understan

Early speech changes in children with multichannel cochlear implants.

A number of studies have demonstrated that cochlear implants provide an improved auditory signal and enhance the development of speech-perception and production skills for profoundly deaf children. However, exactly when these early speech skills begin to develop remains unclear. To explore this issue, we observed, for a 1-year period, four prelingually deaf children who underwent implantation consecutively within 1 month of each other, and we paid particular attention to the first few months of rehabilitation. We found immediate speech scores as early as the first day of implant tune-up. Speec

Time-frequency analyses of thyroarytenoid myoelectric activity in normal and spasmodic dysphonia subjects.

Digital recordings of thyroarytenoid (TA) myoelectric activity (via percutaneous hooked-wire electrodes) were obtained for 10 normal control subjects and 10 subjects with spasmodic dysphonia during performance of five tasks of varying complexity: quiet breathing, Valsalva maneuver, whispered /i/, voiced /i/, and "beep beep went the heap." Time-frequency power spectral density functions, PSD(f,t), were determined for a selected segment of the signals, and measures of median frequency, mean frequency, bandwidth, and center frequency of PSD(f,t) were derived for each sample point. Co-designing a digital family-led intervention for delirium prevention and management in adult critically ill patients: An application of the double diamond design process.

BACKGROUND: Co-designing healthcare interventions is gaining recognition as a novel and collaborative method. Co-design involves end-users from the start, ensuring that an intervention best meets their needs. Despite its potential benefits, this approach is not yet widely used in developing clinical interventions within intensive care units where the perspectives of patients, family members, and clinicians are crucial. OBJECTIVE: To describe the application, benefits and challenges of the Double Diamond model to co-design a digital family-led voice reorientation intervention for delirium prev

Acoustic analysis in stuttering: a machine-learning study.

BACKGROUND: Stuttering is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder affecting speech fluency. The diagnosis and clinical management of stuttering is currently based on perceptual examination and clinical scales. Standardized techniques for acoustic analysis have prompted promising results for the objective assessment of dysfluency in people with stuttering (PWS). OBJECTIVE: We assessed objectively and automatically voice in stuttering, through artificial intelligence (i.e., the support vector machine - SVM classifier). We also investigated the age-related changes affecting voice in stutte

Self-supervised speech quality assessment (S3QA): Leveraging speech foundation models for a scalable speech quality metric.

Methods for automatically assessing speech quality in real world environments are critical for robust human language technologies and assistive devices. Behavioral ratings (e.g., mean opinion scores) are considered the gold standard, but are susceptible to inter-rater variability, cannot be generalized, and are labor-intensive, thus limiting the acoustic challenges they can quantify. We present a scalable method for assessing speech quality: the self-supervised speech quality assessment model. First, we manipulated high-quality utterances, using acoustic challenges that emulate real-world degr
