The thrower's elbow.

Overhead throwing activities expose the elbow to tremendous valgus stress, making athletes vulnerable to a specific constellation of injuries. Although baseball players, in particular pitchers, are the athletes affected most commonly, overhead throwing athletes in football, volleyball, tennis, and javelin tossing also are affected. The purpose of this review is to review the anatomy, biomechanics, pathophysiology, and treatment of elbow disorders related to overhead throwing athletes. Although focus is on management of ulnar collateral ligament injuries, all common pathologies are discussed.

Neck pain and low back pain in relation to functional disability in different sport activities.

This population-based, cross-sectional study aimed to determine the frequency of neck pain, low back pain (LBP) and also the LBP related functional disability in five sport categories including football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, and other sports in one of the Iranian sport Olympiads. The prevalence of neck pain and LBP in different time points was evaluated with the use of an interview questionnaire. A visual analogue scale was used to evaluate the athlete's current pain. Furthermore, the functional disability related to LBP was assessed by the Athletes Disability Index Questionnaire…

Iron status in female athletes participating in team ball-sports.

Iron deficiency anemia is the most prevalent micronutrient deficiency in the world, affecting 20-50% of the world's population. It is estimated that 10 and 20% of male and female athletes are iron deficient, respectively. Iron deficiency has deleterious effects on the physical performance of athletes. It decreases aerobic capacity, increases heart rate and elongates the recovery time after exercise. In this cross-sectional study, 42 semi-professional female athletes who had been playing in basketball, volleyball and handball super league teams served as subjects. Data on socioeconomic and fert…

No improvement in maximum jumping height in experienced and less experienced jumpers following a single session of transabdominal, transcutaneous spinal anodal direct current stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: Conflicting findings have been reported about effects of transcutaneous spinal direct current stimulation (tsDCS) on jumping performance, as transabdominal tsDCS was shown to enhance maximum jumping height while spine-shoulder did not. The aim of the study was to evaluate effects of anodal transabdominal tsDCS in prone lying on jumping height in less experienced (LEJ) and experienced (EJ) jumpers. METHODS: Participants from LEJ (physical education students, 13 men and 10 women) and EJ (volleyball players, 13 men and 10 women) were subjected to a single 15-min session of anodal t…

Knee anterior laxity: a risk factor for traumatic knee injury among sportswomen?

The purpose of this study was to investigate if knee anterior laxity, measured with an arthrometer, is a risk factor for traumatic knee injury in sportswomen. To allow a more complete analysis, other, easily measured variables such as anthropometry, lower leg characteristics, sport exposure and menstrual cycle characteristics were also evaluated as possible risk factors. Subjects were Slovenian sportswomen aged between 11 and 41 years participating in basketball, team handball and volleyball (N = 540). Sportswomen were tested in the pre-season and followed for one season. The data collection i…

Staged approach for upper extremity chronic ischemia in high-performing athlete with arterial thoracic outlet syndrome.

Arterial thoracic outlet syndrome is a rare condition characterized by subclavian artery compression, leading to occlusion, poststenotic dilation, aneurysm formation, and distal embolization. We present the case of a 21-year-old collegiate volleyball player with arterial thoracic outlet syndrome and chronic limb-threatening ischemia owing to bilateral cervical ribs. Initially misdiagnosed as Raynaud's phenomenon, she experienced progressive ischemic symptoms. A staged surgical approach included thoracic outlet decompression followed by axillary-to-radial artery bypass without the need for axil…

Novel COL1A1 gene mutation (R1026X) of type I osteogenesis imperfecta: A first case report.

A 22-year-old Thai man with blue sclera, normal height and absence of deformity sustained an open fracture at the right talus and talo-navicular dislocation while playing in a volleyball match. The patient had a history of several fractures of his elbows, wrists and ankles from minor impacts. Novel COL1A1 nonsense mutation (c. 3202 C-->T), a C to T transition at position 3,203, resulting in arginine to stop codon at codon 1026 (R102 6X) mutation in exon 42 was found, and this is the first case reported in the literature.

[Differential diagnosis of shoulder pain: chronic neuropathy of the suprascapular nerve].

Suprascapular neuropathy may present with chronic shoulder pain and weakness of abduction and external rotation of the arm. Therefore, it should always be included in the differential diagnosis of shoulder pain. Usually, the nerve is compressed at the suprascapular notch or the spinoglenoid notch. Here, the nerve is relatively fixed. In the etiology, repeated and forceful movements around the shoulder joint, especially in athletes such as volleyball players, are considered to be frequent causes of suprascapular nerve damage, whereas ligament hypertrophy and ganglia are uncommon. If conservativ…

Epiphyseal Fracture in Sports.

In brief In this evaluation of 203 acute epiphyseal fractures in the long bones of 183 patients aged 3 to 18, 79 fractures (39%) were related to the following ten sports activities: football, hockey, basketball, downhill skiing, baseball/softball, wrestling, soccer, gymnastics, tennis, and volleyball. An additional 21 fractures occurred in weight lifting, roller skating, ice skating, and skateboarding. Approximately 50% of the fractures in this urban population were sports- related. The symptoms of epiphyseal fractures are the same as symptoms of fractures or ligament injuries in general. Phys…

Association of Hip and Foot Factors With Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper's Knee) in Athletes.

Background Investigations on the causes of patellar tendinopathy should consider impairments at the hip and foot/ankle because they are known to influence movement patterns and affect patellar tendon loading. Objectives To investigate hip and foot/ankle impairments associated with patellar tendinopathy in volleyball and basketball athletes using classification and regression tree analysis. Methods In this clinical measurement, cross-sectional study, 192 athletes were assessed for impairments of the hip and foot/ankle, including shank-forefoot alignment, dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM), ilio…

Effect of kinematics on ground reaction force during single-leg jump landing in children: a causal decomposition approach in jumpers and non-jumpers.

BACKGROUND: The interaction between joint kinematics and kinetics is usually assessed by linear correlation analysis, which does not imply causality. Understanding the causal links between these variables may help develop landing interventions to improve technique and create joint-specific strengthening programs to reduce reaction forces and injury risk. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the causal interaction between lower limb sagittal kinematics and vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) during single-leg jump landing in children who are jumpers (volleyball and gymn…

Marfan's Syndrome: Detection and Management.

In brief: Marian's syndrome has gained increased attention and interest recently, more so since the death of volleyball star Flo Hyman last January. The disorder was first described by French pediatrician Antoine Bernard-Jean Marfan in 1896, although it may not have been the same syndrome as we know it today. Current thought suggests a defect in collagen-the fibrous material found in bones, joints, eyes, heart, and blood vessels. Positive diagnosis requires the presence of at least two of four major features: a positive family history and ocular, cardiac, and skeletal abnormalities. This artic…
