INTRODUCTION: Emerging scholarship highlights the dominance of Western epistemologies in disaster research, limiting diversity and participation in knowledge production. The occupational therapy profession faces similar critiques of epistemic and hegemonic blind spots, prompting calls for critical reflection on professional assumptions. Drawing on narratives and guided by Whiteford's Occupational Justice PLUS model, we explore how learnings from community members' responses to a bushfire event could broaden our understanding of occupational, epistemic, and hermeneutic justice in the context of

This research uses the arts-based research method of found poetry, the creation of poem-like prose from existing text, to share the lived experience of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfire disaster in Australia which killed 173 people. After outlining the processes, this paper applies found poetry to an existing text: Peg Fraser's book, Black Saturday. Five found poems are shared, each conveying a different element of the disaster experience: "Armageddon," "Go - GET OUT," "Bushfire Chook," "Resisting the Poetry Tree," and "Lucky". Compared to normal prose, there is an authentic and vulnerable vibr

Global wildfires have grown increasingly severe. Conventional fire suppressants exhibit low fire-extinguishing efficiency, re-ignition risks, environmental contamination, and cumbersome preparation procedures. Herein, a biofertilizer-based hydrogel (BBH) was fabricated using food additives and compound fertilizers as all-biomass raw materials. The resultant material is low-cost and suitable for large-scale production. Different from traditional single-functional hydrogels, this material operates via a gas-liquid-solid three-phase coupled flame-retardant mechanism based on bound water cooling, …

During emergencies, older adults stand among the most vulnerable, facing long-lasting food insecurity and overall health issues. The "365+ Days of Care" food aid program addressed food insecurity and poor quality of life among vulnerable older adults following a devastating wildfire in Greece. Our aim was to evaluate the program's efficiency, using a process evaluation framework and a partial cost-utility analysis. In total, n = 133 wildfire-hit residents (≥65 years) received daily tailored, pre-cooked meals and/or weekly food packages. The study outcomes were assessed from baseline to 12 mont

PURPOSE: To identify and characterize the physically demanding tasks undertaken during multi-day wildfire (known as bushfire in Australia) suppression by Australian rural firefighters.
METHODS: During semi-structured group interviews, thirty-one experienced male firefighters reviewed 53 firefighting tasks that could be performed during tanker-based bushfire suppression. Participants were asked to nominate the most physically demanding tasks and then define their typical frequencies, durations, operational importance and the dominant actions and activity types in each task.
RESULTS: Seven tas

This study investigated the feasibility and psychological benefits of a two-day intensive forest therapy program incorporating mindfulness practices for individuals affected by natural disasters. The sample comprised 110 participants, including those who had either experienced wildfires or floods or served as first responders. The results revealed significant reductions in depression, anxiety, and stress pre- and post-intervention, alongside improvements in vitality and mindfulness. Furthermore, enhanced mindfulness significantly moderated reductions in anxiety, stress, and depression. These f…

Public health emergencies often involve weather-related issues, such as flooding, heatwaves, wildfires, storms, and vector-borne or water-borne diseases. Extreme weather is becoming more frequent and intense owing to climate change. Preventive medicine physicians and other public health professionals are uniquely qualified to serve in leadership or advisory roles during the actual emergencies or preparedness for the climate-related emergencies. Many residency programs are now integrating climate education into their curriculum, but few include simulated exercises. The authors present a climate…

Wildfire ash is transported in large quantities to receiving water bodies, where it may exert strong chemical controls on ecosystem function. To assess the role of fire ash in altering CO2 and CH4 fluxes in aquatic sediments, we designed three mesocosm experiments that compared the changing fluxes of these gases and water quality parameters under different loads and types of ash. Black ash (char) caused substantial drops in pH and increased CO2 and CH4 emissions through abiotic and biotic mechanisms, while white ash dramatically increased pH and enhanced CH4 emissions, possibly due to inhibiti

Carcinogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from wildfires and wildland urban interface (WUI) fires pose significant health risks to firefighters. Yet, limited information is known about the specific chemical composition of smoke exposure which is needed to develop targeted cancer prevention protocols. Critically, current methods to monitor firefighters' exposure to these hazardous VOCs are lacking. To address this gap, we developed an automated portable air sampling device capable of identifying and quantifying firefighters' exposure to toxic VOCs over a 24-hour work period. The device can…

Humanity’s ongoing overuse of natural resources is degrading the Earth’s environment, intensifying climate change impacts. Recent record temperatures and frequent wildfires threaten humans directly and disrupt ecosystems, especially by damaging forest carbon sinks, which accelerates global warming in a harmful cycle. To combat this, the study developed a forest fire monitoring and management system using Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The system consists of four layers: (1) The sensing layer collects environmental data—meteorological, air quality, images, and thermal imaging—to detect fi…

During the COVID-19 pandemic, climate-related natural hazards, such as wildfires, storms/hurricanes, and others (e.g., earthquakes, tornadoes), further disrupted the normal functioning of US residents. The co-occurrence of natural disasters and COVID-19 created unprecedentedly elevated levels of stress, especially to the racial/ethnic minorities and lower-income households. This study examines how natural disasters related to recreational drug use during COVID-19 and whether the relation is heterogeneous across different subgroups categorized by race/ethnicity and household income. This study …

Environmental disasters are extreme environmental processes such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, tsunamis, floods, cyclones, storms, wildfires and droughts that are the consequences of the climate crisis due to human intervention in the environment. Their effects on human health have alarmed the global scientific community. Among them, autoimmune diseases, a heterogeneous group of disorders, have increased dramatically in many parts of the world, likely as a result of changes in our exposure to environmental factors. However, only a limited number of studies have attempted to d…

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are chemical indicators of crop straw combustion as well as significant atmospheric pollutants. It is challenging to promptly detect natural "wildfires" during agricultural production, which often lead to uncontrollable and substantial economic losses. Moreover, both "wildfires" and artificial "straw burning" practices pose severe threats to the ecological environment and human health. Consequently, developing sensors capable of rapid and high-precision quantitative analysis of SO2/NO2 is essential and urgent for detecting early fires in agricult…

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic started in December 2019, spread like wildfire and took an immense toll on human life. ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine was used worldwide for the prevention of Covid-19. Covid-19 has been implicated in the causation of severe haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) syndrome. However, the same has not been reported with ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine in the literature. We report a young man who developed secondary HLH post-ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination.

SARS-COV2 pandemic has spread like wildfire and has affected all the countries worldwide. The virus mainly affects the lungs and has numerous manifestations. The development of spontaneous pneumatocele and pneumothorax has rarely been reported in the literature, especially in spontaneously breathing patients. We report two cases of COVID-19 patients who developed these complications after discharge from our hospital. These complications are uncommon but can be potentially fatal and the treating physician should keep these complications as differential while managing such cases.

Forest fires in the Himalaya act as episodic yet powerful sources of aerosols, exerting strong perturbations on regional air quality, radiative forcing, and climate feedback. This study investigates the role of fire emissions in modulating aerosol properties and atmospheric heating over Katarmal (29.64°N, 79.62°E; 1225 m amsl), a western Himalayan semi-urban site from 2019 to 2024. Multi-year ground-based observations of black carbon, aerosol absorption (σabs,λ), aerosol optical depth (AOD), and meteorological parameters were analysed to contrast fire (FF1-FF6) and non-fire conditions. Solastalgia is a recent concept that refers to disruptive psychological responses in people exposed to environmental degradation. The aim of this study was to determine the number of dimensions solastalgia has using a sample of people exposed to the effects of climate change in the coastal dry land of Maule region, Chile. In order to achieve this, a Scale Of Solastalgia (SOS) was designed and then validated, by means of applying it to 223 inhabitants at the municipalities of Pencahue (n = 105) and Curepto (n = 118), who were also evaluated by the Short Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Rating Int

Forest fires are becoming increasingly severe and frequent due to global climate change. Trace gases emitted from forest fires significantly affect atmospheric chemistry and climate change on a regional and global scale. Forest fires occur frequently in Southwest China, but systematic studies on trace gas emissions from forest fires in Southwest China are rare. Leaves of seven typical vegetation fuels based on their prominence in forest fires consumption in Southwest China were burned in a self-designed combustion device and the emission factors of eighteen trace gases (greenhouse gases, non-m
