Nasal strips do not affect cardiorespiratory measures during recovery from anaerobic exercise.

Nasal dilators supposedly aid recovery from exercise by reducing nasal airway resistance. Research has focused on the effectiveness of nasal dilators during exercise. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of nasal dilators on heart rate (HR), minute ventilation (VE), and oxygen consumption (Vo2) during recovery from anaerobic exercise. Fourteen subjects (19-32 years) performed a modified Cunningham-Faulkner anaerobic treadmill test (1-minute walk at 2.0 miles per hour [mph], 0% grade; 1-minute jog at 5 mph, 0% grade; and sprint at 8 mph, 20% grade) under 3 randomly assigned cond

Heliox improves pulsus paradoxus and peak expiratory flow in nonintubated patients with severe asthma.

Heliox is a blend of helium and oxygen with a gas density less than that of air that decreases airway resistance (Raw) in patients ventilated for status asthmaticus. We tested whether breathing an 80:20 mixture of helium:oxygen would reduce pulsus paradoxus (PP) and increase peak expiratory flow (PEF) in patients presenting to the emergency room with an exacerbation of asthma. After receiving 30 min of beta-agonist aerosols and intravenously administered methylprednisolone, 27 patients whose PP remained greater than 15 mm Hg and whose PEF remained less than 250 L/min consented to breathe helio

[The dynamic function of the motor apparatus of the respiratory system during maximal voluntary hyperventilation under hypoxia and hypercapnia].

The working ability in the course of hyperventilation can be divided into three stages: the adaptation, stable working ability, the fatigue. Hypoxia decreased the duration and intensity of voluntary hyperventilation. During hypercapnia, the hyperventilation is more intensive and shorter. The data obtained suggest a co-operation of one's own will and chemoreceptor stimuli under hypoxia and hypercapnia.

Oxygen cost of breathing and diaphragmatic pressure-time index. Measurement in patients with COPD during weaning with pressure support ventilation.

The oxygen cost of breathing and the time integral of the transdiaphragmatic pressure were measured at the onset of the weaning period in eight patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease requiring mechanical ventilation. Measurements were achieved during continuous positive airway pressure ventilation and during 15 cmH2O pressure support ventilation. For both periods, the O2COB was estimated as the difference between oxygen uptake of the period and that during controlled ventilation. During CPAP ventilation, the O2COB was 16.9 +/- 1.5 percent. During PSV, it was only 6.3 +/- 1.3 perce

Chest wall distortion in patients with flail chest.

Ventilators can impose resistive and elastic loads during subject-initiated and spontaneous breaths. Such loads might worsen the chest wall … lator-imposed load of the high gas flow system. The distortion imposed by ventilators increases the work of breathing in these patients and may thus contribute to difficulty in weaning.

The Swara-Informed model of autonomic synchrony in psychotherapy: theoretical foundations and hypotheses.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysregulation is increasingly recognized as a central mechanism complicating psychotherapeutic work across anxiety, trauma-related, and mood disorders. Persistent hyperarousal (sympathetic activation) or hypoarousal (persistent parasympathetic activation or shutdown/ dissociation) may put clients out of their "window of tolerance," thus limiting access to cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal processes that are essential to the effectiveness of psychotherapy. Swara yoga, a traditional Indian system, assigns functional significance to nasal dominance and unilateral nostr

Dyspnoea: Pathophysiology and a clinical approach.

Dyspnoea, also known as shortness of breath or breathlessness, is a subjective awareness of the sensation of uncomfortable breathing. It may be of physiological, pathological or social origin. The pathophysiology of dyspnoea is complex, and involves the activation of several pathways that lead to increased work of breathing, stimulation of the receptors of the upper or lower airway, lung parenchyma, or chest wall, and excessive stimulation of the respiratory centre by central and peripheral chemoreceptors. Activation of these pathways is relayed to the central nervous system via respiratory mu…

Models of Cheyne-Stokes respiration with cardiovascular pathologies.

Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR) is a periodic breathing pattern, characterized by short intervals of very little or no breathing (apnea), each followed by an interval of very heavy breathing (hyperpnea). This work presents a new compartmental model of the human cardio-respiratory system, simulating the factors that determine the concentrations of carbon dioxide in the compartments of the cardiovascular system and the lungs. The parameter set on which a Hopf bifurcation gives birth to stable CSR oscillations has been determined. The model predicts that the onset of CSR oscillations may result f

Internal dosimetry of inhaled iodine-131.

In this paper, the dose assessment for the iodine inhalation exposure in 19 aerosol sizes and three gas/vapor forms at three levels of thyroid uptake, was performed. Two different modes of work (light vs. heavy) and breathing (nose vs. mouth) for aerosol inhalation were investigated. In order to calculate the cumulated activities per unit of inhaled activity, a combined model which included the latest models of both human respiratory and alimentary tract was developed. The S values for 131I were computed based on the ICRP adult male and female reference voxel phantoms by the Monte Carlo method

Physiological definition of upper airway obstructions in mouse model for Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome is a neuro-developmental disease accompanied by breathing symptoms including breath-hold events, and is caused by mutation of the transcriptional repressor methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2). Males of Mecp2-deficient mice (Mecp2(-/y)) also develop breathing symptoms, with erratic rhythm and life-threatening apnoeas from postnatal day 30 (P30), leading to respiratory distress and premature death at around P60. We investigated the respiratory function of conscious Mecp2(-/y) mice at P40-P60 using conventional whole-body plethysmography, double-chamber plethysmography and chest EM

A case of hypercapnic respiratory failure.

A systematic work-up is important in case of hypercapnia. Pay attention to the shape of the flow-volume curve and any abnormal breathing sounds. In case of stridor, vocal cord paralysis should be suspected and, if confirmed, neurological investigations are advised. https://bit.ly/34APMi8.

Approach to mechanical ventilation: a simplified approach for a pulmonologist.

Mechanical ventilation is a critical intervention for patients with respiratory failure, providing essential support for oxygenation and ventilation while reducing the work of breathing. It operates through key breath-phase variables: triggering (breath initiation), targeting (flow or pressure delivery), and cycling (ending inspiration). Various ventilation modes, including invasive and non-invasive methods, are tailored to patient needs. Non-invasive ventilation and high-flow nasal cannula are first-line options in acute respiratory distress, whereas invasive mechanical ventilation is necessa…

A pattern recognition method to distinguish gradual unilateral diaphragm paralysis in the cat.

This work deals with the application of a pattern recognition method to distinguish the degree of diaphragm paralysis after gradual unilateral sections of phrenic nerve rootlets in anesthetized, spontaneously breathing cats. The data set consisted of the features that characterize breathing pattern and of phrenic nerve amplitude. The method called for stratification of 6-dimensional vectors into three classes: intact, partial, and complete unilateral phrenicotomy, which offers the possibility to construe the classification rule on the basis of the information contained in a set of feature vect

Relief of sleep-related oropharyngeal airway obstruction by continuous insufflation of the pharynx.

Sleep-related upper airway obstruction was treated by continuous insufflation of the pharynx (CIP) in 20 children. All had symptoms but only 1 qualified for a diagnosis of the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. Passage of warm humidified air through a thin nasopharyngeal tube at 2-10 litres/min (mean 3.5) relieved obstruction immediately in all patients. Relief was always clinically apparent and accompanied by reduced pleural pressure excursions during breathing. An index of the work of breathing (the product of breathing frequency and pleural pressure change per breath) fell by nearly 60% whi…

A computational stochastic procedure for solving the epidemic breathing transmission system.

This work provides numerical simulations of the nonlinear breathing transmission epidemic system using the proposed stochastic scale conjugate gradient neural networks (SCGGNNs) procedure. The mathematical model categorizes the breathing transmission epidemic model into four dynamics based on a nonlinear stiff ordinary differential system: susceptible, exposed, infected, and recovered. Three different cases of the model are taken and numerically presented by applying the stochastic SCGGNNs. An activation function 'log-sigmoid' uses twenty neurons in the hidden layers. The precision of SCGGNNs

Airway Obstruction from a Tracheal Mass in a 5-Year-Old: A Case Report.

Stridor is a common presenting symptom for children in emergency departments (EDs) and usually represents an infectious process, such as croup, or aspiration of a foreign body. We present the case of an otherwise healthy 5-year-old girl with episodic increased work of breathing for several months that was initially diagnosed as asthma by her primary care physician. She subsequently presented to the ED with acutely worsening noisy breathing and dyspnea. Patient and parent denied any recent foreign body ingestions or choking episodes. We gave multiple doses of racemic epinephrine in the ED witho…

Effects of inspiratory muscle metaboreflex on cerebral circulation at rest and during light-intensity exercise in healthy males.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to clarify the effects of inspiratory muscle metaboreflex on cerebral circulation at rest and during exercise. METHODS: Twelve young males randomly completed two trials (rest and exercise [leg cycling at 40 % peak oxygen uptake] trials) on separate days. In each trial, the internal carotid artery (ICA), an index of cerebral circulation, was measured using Doppler ultrasound 2 min after inspiratory loading breathing (IL condition) or non-loading breathing (control condition). During ICA assessments, participants engaged in 3 min of spontaneous breathing (SB), followed

[Histoplasmosis group disease in bat researchers returning from Cuba].

CASE HISTORY: Four males (age 25 to 40 years) and one female (age 25) were admitted to our hospital almost simultaneously with symptoms of fever up to 38 degrees C, dry cough, thoracodynia, dyspnoea, myalgia and arthralgia. All patients belonged to a team of eight German bat researchers who had returned from Cuba 10 days before, where they had investigated bats in caves. Another member of the team had only mild histoplasmosis and was followed in our outpatient clinic. Two scientists who wore their breathing masks continuously during their work in the caves did not fall ill. EXAMINATIONS: Ches
