Acute chest pain and esophageal mucosal injury following an extreme yoga position Case report.

A young lady complained of the sudden onset of intense chest pain, in consequence of an extreme hyperextension of the back in a yoga position. At endoscopy a large lesion of the esophageal epithelium was detected, involving the middle third of the anterior wall of the esophagus. Other symptoms reported by the patient were dysphagia and odynophagia, depicting the typical features of intramural hematoma, also known as intramural dissection or intramural perforation of the oesophagus. The patient was managed conservatively and symptoms disappeared within a week. A barium swallow at six months rep…

Yoga for Teens With Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Results From a Mixed-Methods Pilot Study.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition associated with recurrent abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. It is particularly pernicious to youth, who may withdraw from life tasks due to pain, diarrhea, and/or fear of symptoms. Emotional stress exacerbates IBS symptoms, and mind-body interventions may be beneficial. In this mixed-methods study of 18 teens aged 14 to 17 years undertaking a 6-week Iyengar yoga intervention, we aimed to identify treatment responders and to explore differences between responders and nonresponders on a range of quantitative outcomes and qualitative the…

Alternate-Nostril Yoga Breathing Reduced Blood Pressure While Increasing Performance in a Vigilance Test.

Objective: The aim of this study is to numerically evaluate thrombosis risk within occluded coronary arterial fistulas (CAF) with terminal aneurysms, and provide guidance in choosing occlusion positions, with clinical observations as reference. Method: Four patients with CAF were studied, with different occlusion positions in actual treatments. Hemodynamics simulations were conducted, with blood residue predicted using the blood stasis model. Three types of models (untreated model, aneurysm-reserved model and aneurysm-removed model) were studeid for each patient. Four metrics, i.e., proportion

Measuring the four paths: Development and psychometric properties of the Paths of Yoga Self Evaluation (POYSE).

BACKGROUND: Yoga is increasingly offered as an adjunct in psychiatric care, but it is delivered uniformly and no validated instrument identifies the approach to which a person is naturally drawn. Classical yoga describes four complementary paths to freedom from suffering and cultivation of well-being, suited to different temperaments: Jnana (knowledge and self-inquiry), Raja (meditative discipline), Karma (selfless action) and Bhakti (devotion). OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate the Paths of Yoga Self Evaluation (POYSE), a self-report measure of orientation toward each path, for personalisin…

Long-Term Effects of Yoga Practice on Metabolic, Hormonal, and Anthropometric Parameters in Climacteric Women.

Metabolic and hormonal disturbances are common during the climacteric period and contribute to an increased risk of chronic diseases. This longitudinal, community-based controlled study evaluated the effects of regular yoga practice over 24 months on anthropometric, metabolic, and hormonal parameters in climacteric women. A total of 182 Brazilian women aged 40-65 were followed; participants who chose to engage in yoga formed the intervention group, while…

Efficacy, Safety, and Functional Outcomes of Yoga Therapy in Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a common and debilitating complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus, affecting up to 50% of patients. Standard pharmacological treatments offer limited relief and do not address the underlying pathophysiology. Yoga is a mind-body practice combining physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation, which has demonstrated potential benefits in improving metabolic parameters and psychological well-being in DPN. Emerging evidence suggests yoga may also improve functional outcomes and alleviate symptoms in individuals with DPN. This systemat…

To investigate the effect of face yoga on postoperative edema, ecchymosis, and discoloration after septorhinoplasty. In this prospective controlled study, 70 patients were assigned to either the face yoga group or the control group. The face yoga group (n = 43) performed standardized exercises twice daily for 14 days in …

Determinants of Qigong, Tai Chi, and Yoga Use for Health Conditions: A Systematic Review Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Mind-body movement interventions such as qi gong, tai chi, and yoga are recommended in clinical practice guidelines to improve outcomes for several health conditions. However, use of these interventions for health conditions, or the integration of these interventions within healthcare settings, is low. A systematic synthesis of implementation determinants (i.e., barriers and facilitators) is needed to increase adoption. Similarly, determinants may influence other implementation outcomes, such as scalability or sustainability of these interventions in a healthcare system or commun…
